Located on the northern Tuscan coast near the beautiful hilltop town of Riparbella, the wooded 100 hectare Caiarossa estate boasts sweeping views of the Tyrrhenian Sea, its hilly terrain covered with the brilliant red or “rossa” gravelly soil for which it is named and enjoying a steady rise in quality under the ownership of the Albada Jelgersma family since 2004, also owners of Bordeaux estates du Tertre and Giscours. A blend of mostly Cabernet Franc and Syrah with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Sangiovese, Petit Verdot and a little Grenache, the stunning 96 pt. 2019 Caiarossa is “balanced and fresh” according to the Wine Advocate’s Monica Larner boasting “thick layers of dark fruit, crushed stone, tobacco and exotic spice,” that promises to evolve over the next few decades. Described as “rich, deep and yet not at all heavy” by Vinous critic Antonio Galloni, the refined 95 pt. 2020 Caiarossa is “an ambitious blend of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Sangiovese, Syrah and Alicante” according to the Wine Advocate’s Monica Larner, summed up as “well executed with lots of fragrance and a mineral, stone grip on the finish” by Decanter’s Georgina Hindle. Very complex aromas of crushed berries, yet the fresh herbs, dried berries, sandalwood and Spanish cedar add complexity and brightness. Full-bodied with tannins that melt into the wine. Savory. Cabernet franc, merlot, syrah, cabernet sauvignon and petit verdot with a touch of alicante and sangiovese. Better after 2021.

The 2016 Caiarossa will be released in September. This wine is a blend of seven grapes—42% Cabernet Franc, 25% Merlot, 15.5% Syrah, 6% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Petit Verdot, 4.5% Sangiovese and 1% Alicante. This vintage sees a slightly higher percentage of Cabernet Franc than usual, but I am told that the 2018 edition will see more Syrah instead. The bouquet presents a beautiful first wave of dark fruit that pushes the limits of ripeness but remains safely within the realm of elegance. The aromas are balanced and focused with blackberry, cassis, and light touches of salty or rusty mineral. The wine is not too constructed or big in the mouth, rather is shows a delicate level of elegances that absolutely seals the deal. Some 57,000 bottles were made.
