"I was quite frankly blown away by the wines I tasted from Caparsa this year. Proprietor Paolo Cianferoni and his family craft deep, soulful wines loaded with character." –Antonio Galloni, Vinous
A classically styled Riserva not to be missed by fans and collectors of powerful, long-lived Italian red wines, the outstanding 94pt 2016 Caparsa Chianti Classico Riserva Doccio a Matteo offers a masculine, dark core of bold, expressive fresh Sangiovese fruit crafted with a "lasting and elegant intensity" according to the Wine Advocate's Monica Larner, as distinguished and age-worthy as Tuscany's most elite wines and now offered at specially negotiated, best on the market pricing for stocking up.
Located on top of a scenic Radda in Chianti hillside with spectacular Tuscan vineyard views, the 16th century Caparsa Estate boasts 12 hectares of organically farmed vines and restored centuries' old buildings that serve as both home and winery, managed by the energetic Paolo Cianferoni and his partner Gianna since 1982. Working over 50 harvests at his family's estate since the age of seven, Paolo Cianferoni is a hands-on winemaker, overseeing Caparsa's rise in quality from very good to spectacular over the last decades and selling out most of its small, critically acclaimed production locally. Sourced from the Doccio a Matteo vineyard at 450-575 meters above sea level, the estate's top Sangiovese vines average 60 years of age, planted on a northeast aspect away from the brutally hot summer sun in rocky galestro schist with chalky albarese. Hand picking and selecting the best fruit (with the remainder of his harvest sold to negociants including Antinori and Ruffino), Paolo fermented the flagship 2016 Doccio a Matteo Riserva with wild yeasts in Caparsa's artisanal stone cellar before aging it in large 10 hectoliter casks (aka botti) and bottling it unfiltered over two years after harvest, yielding a stunningly rich and wonderfully balanced benchmark of cellar-worthy Sangiovese poised to evolve over decades.
Sourced from a top Tuscan vintage and described as an "outstanding wine with a monastic beauty" by Decanter, this rarely available, limited allocation of 2016 Caparsa Chianti Classico Riserva Doccio a Matteo is dark, dense and utterly delicious, with a transcendent aging potential – don't hesitate to make room for a few cases and experience the mind-blowing evolution of this exceptional single vineyard Chianti Classico Riserva that is without a doubt in a league of its own. |
