Dark, bright-rimmed ruby. Expressive aromas of ripe red and blue fruits and candied flowers, along with vanilla and pipe tobacco topnotes. Juicy and appealingly sweet, offering black raspberry, cherry-vanilla and mocha flavors and a smoky nuance that emerges as the wine opens up. Finishes sappy, penetrating and long, with smooth, slow-building tannins and a repeating vanilla note. Aged in new French oak barrels for two years.

Obalo works with growers in Rioja Alavesa, selecting the oldest parcels for Las Arenas, where the vines range in age from 65 to 90 years. This Reserva aged for 18 months in new French oak barrels, developing a mellow richness and a gentle touch of earthy flavor. It’s driven by sweet, pale red-berry fruit, contrasted by tight fruit-skin tannins. While this will stand up to roast meats, it is fine enough to serve with grilled mackerel.
