I exclusively use B‑21 for my online wine purchases. I may check around on other sites to see pricing, but B‑21 is always at least the same price, if not less. The website is easy to use. I typically purchase cases and try to take advantage of any free shipping offers. Since I don't like to wait around the house for delivery (UPS needs to verify age), I just have it shipped to the local CVS in town. It's usually there for pickup in less than a week of purchase.

Ordering was flawless. FedEx however, first confirmed delivery for Thursday, then for Friday, and finally for Monday. So it wasn’t two day delivery, it was six. That’s not on B‑21, but FedEx and I want to make that clear. I’m very pleased with B‑21.

2019 Clos du Marquis (750ml)

Cabernet Sauvignon from Saint-Julien, Bordeaux, France

B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

Crafted by the team at Chateau Leoville Las Cases, these highly rated vintages from Clos du Marquis boast rich and concentrated ripe red and black fruits layered over flinty graphite with elegant, complex tannins, some ready to drink now with over a decade of pristine aging, others benefiting from a few years of patient cellaring and all boasting the pedigree of the renowned Second Growth Chateau at a fraction of the price.

Created in 1902 as a second label of Leoville Las Cases, the unclassified Clos du Marquis has been bottled as a completely separate offering since the 1980’s, highlighting the unique characteristics of its distinct terroir just inland from some of the Medoc’s greatest vineyards. Across the D2 Route des Chateaux just west of the famed L’Enclos vineyard of Leoville Las Cases, the enclosed Petit Clos vineyard of Clos du Marquis is situated on St. Julien’s northern border near Pauillac and surrounded by Second Growths Leoville Poyferre, Leoville Barton and Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande. Located on the St. Julien plateau at around 20 meters above sea level, the 45-hectare vineyard is planted mostly to Cabernet Sauvignon with about a third Merlot and a small amount of Cab Franc in an array of soils ranging from quaternary gravel over gravel-sand to gravel-clay subsoil with veins of compact clay, its proximity to the Gironde responsible for the diversity of soils and a unique microclimate that encourages ripening and protects the vineyard from frost. Ranging from the 93 pt. 2005 Clos du Marquis that’s “in a very attractive place today” according to Antonio Galloni of Vinous to the 95 pt. 2014 described as “tight and polished” by James Suckling to the more recent 93 pt. 2020 that Inside Bordeaux’s Jane Anson calls “a brilliant Marquis,” these top scoring Clos du Marquis vintages reflect its lengthy evolution and ability to age gracefully, whether ready for the glass now or requiring time in the cellar.

Upon tasting the 93 pt. 2005 Clos du Marquis ten years after its release, critic Neal Martin wrote, “Cannot afford Leoville Las-Cases? Then you know where to come,” these top scoring selections from Clos du Marquis reflecting the estate’s rich pedigree and terroir and over delivering value for Bordeaux lovers and collectors of powerful Left Bank blends.

I continue to just love this terroir. The 2019 Clos Du Marquis brings beautiful richness and depth with the purity and elegance of the vintage. Cassis, smoked black cherries, tobacco, gravelly earth, and spice are just some of the nuances, and it's medium to full-bodied, with a rich, dense mid-palate, serious, almost chewy tannins, and a great finish. It's not for those looking for instant gratification and demands a good decade of bottle age.

94+ points, Jeb Dunnuck (Apr 2022)

The 2019 Clos du Marquis is another cuvée from the Delon family that’s smaller than usual this year, as fully 20% of the vineyards that inform this bottling are in various stages of replanting, with the objective of bringing the percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon vines up to more than 70%. Exhibiting aromas of inky cassis, plums, incense, wood smoke and spices, it’s medium to full-bodied, fleshy and concentrated, with lively acids, beautifully powdery tannins and a supple, more immediately charming profile than its big sibling across the street, Léoville-Las Cases.

94 points, William Kelley, Wine Advocate (Apr 2022)

The 2019 is an exuberant, plush Clos du Marquis packed with inky, dark fruit. All the signatures of Saint-Julien and this estate are all amplified in the glass. Licorice, lavender, spice and mocha develop, adding gorgeous layers to this decidedly extroverted Clos du Marquis. I haven't always been thrilled with how Clos du Marquis ages, but for drinking over the near and medium term, the 2019 is positively stellar.

94 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Feb 2022)

Made from 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Franc, the 2019 Clos du Marquis is deep garnet-purple colored. It strides boldly out of the glass with warm cassis, blackberry preserves, and ripe, juicy plums, leading to hints of cardamom, cumin seed, and chocolate box with a waft of camphor. Medium to full-bodied, it offers up plenty of rich, ripe black fruits with a grainy texture and spicy lift on the finish.

94 points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Independent (May 2022)

Shows steeped plum, boysenberry and blackberry notes that form the core, with enough depth to absorb the apple wood and mesquite notes that line it, while a taut iron note drives the finish. Features lively savory and tobacco notes that add energy through the finish. A bit rigid in terms of structure, but that's the vintage. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Best from 2025 through 2038.

93 points, James Molesworth, Wine Spectator (Mar 2022)

So much gravel and dark-fruit character with raspberries and blackcurrants, as well as currant leaf. It’s medium-to full-bodied with very fine, rounded tannins and a bright finish. 70% cabernet sauvignon, 23% merlot and 7% cabernet franc. Drinkable now, but even better in 2024.

93 points, James Suckling (Mar 2022)
