Located between Siena and Florence in the hills of Castelnuovo Berardenga, the entry to the spectacular Tolaini estate is marked by massive stone lions and surrounded by meticulous gardens and gravel paths with rows of the towering cypress trees emblematic of the rolling Tuscan countryside. Leaving his native Tuscany in 1956 in search of fortune, founder Pier Luigi Tolaini built one of North America’s largest transport companies over the next 40 years before returning to the Chianti Classico region to make wine and purchasing 25 hectares just north of Siena in 1998. Employing state of the art technology and top viticultural experts including famed enologist Michel Rolland to determine the optimal site for each type of grape, the estate’s 50 hectares of organically certified vineyards are planted with a mix of international varietals as well as the indigenous Sangiovese in the region’s sandy, stony soils known as “tufa." Situated high in the Berardenga hills, the 2019 Tolaini Valdisanti is sourced from the estate’s sustainably farmed Tenuta San Giovanni Vineyard, the vines tended by hand to maintain low yields and allow the grapes to reach optimal ripeness. Crafted under the direction of famed consultant Luca D’Attoma, whose clients include Tua Rita and Allegrini’s Poggio al Tesoro in Bolgheri, winemaker Francesco Rosi aged the robust 2019 Tolaini Valdisanti for 16 months in French oak barriques with 6 months on the lees before bottling it unfiltered and aging it for 12 months more, yielding a “balanced and harmonious” red according to the Wine Spectator’s Bruce Sanderson with bright acidity and smooth, integrated tannins promising a long-lived evolution.

From the estate's Tenuta San Giovanni Vineyard, this is a blend of equal parts Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc aged in oak for 16 months. The Tolaini 2019 Valdisanti is quite generous and rich, with thick layers of dark fruit, black cherry, pencil shaving, tar and licorice.
