Ordering was flawless. FedEx however, first confirmed delivery for Thursday, then for Friday, and finally for Monday. So it wasn’t two day delivery, it was six. That’s not on B‑21, but FedEx and I want to make that clear. I’m very pleased with B‑21.

2020 Achaval Ferrer Quimera (750ml)

Malbec from Mendoza, Argentina

B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

From the Mendoza estate “boasting a reputation as one of Argentina’s finest producers” according to James Suckling, the seductive 93 pt. 2020 Achaval Ferrer Quimera reveals aromatic juicy dark fruit hinting of earthy spice layered with fine integrated tannins, a “powerful Bordeaux-style blend” according to the Wine Spectator’s Kim Marcus and a seriously good bargain for Malbec fans to enjoy often.

Established as a collaborative effort led by renowned Italian winemaker and consultant Roberto Cipresso, Argentina born Santiago Achaval founded Achaval Ferrer in the foothills of the Andes near the Mendoza and Tunuyan Rivers in 1998 along with Italian born Manuel Ferrer and Tiziano Siviero, producing vineyard-driven Malbecs that have consistently garnered 90 plus point scores over the last three decades and earning multiple spots on the Wine Spectator’s Top 100. Named for the mythical creature (pronounced “key-mare-ah”) made up of the parts of different animals, the 2020 Quimera is sourced from three distinctly different estate vineyards planted with low-yielding, ungrafted old vines across the Uco Valley and Lujan de Cuyo at altitudes ranging from 700 to 1,200 meters, the rich Malbec-based blend crafted by winemaker Gustavo Rearte employing a low intervention approach "to let the varietal and terroir speak for themselves” according to James Suckling. Combining 48% Malbec with 19% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Cabernet Franc, 13% Merlot and 2% Petit Verdot, the impressive 2020 Achaval Ferrer Quimera was aged in a mix of about 60% new French oak barrels for 15 months with extended time in bottle, yielding a balanced, harmonious blend described as “soft and voluptuous” by the Wine Advocate’s Luis Gutierrez and revealing “finely grained, rounded tannins” promising to evolve over the next decade according to Eric Guido of Vinous.

Crafted by the iconic estate “long considered one of Argentina’s leading wineries” according to Decanter, the plush and appealing 93 pt. 2020 Achaval Ferrer Quimera seamlessly blends the layered flavors of concentrated old vine fruit as an elegant expression of Mendoza’s diverse terroirs, providing “more complexity and finesse than many others in its price range” according to the Wine Spectator’s Kim Marcus and ready to enjoy over the next decade at an unbeatable price.

A confident blend of Malbec, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, with a splash of Petit Verdot, aged in new and used French oak for just over a year. Plush black fruit aromas woven with spice, chocolate, mint and violets. Rich, but well-balanced palate, with fine tannins and balancing freshness. Layers of black berries, cherry, cranberry, dark chocolate, spice and pencil shavings, with a lingering finish.

93 points, Julie Sheppard, Decanter (Aug 2023)

Quimera was the only Malbec from the winery that wasn't 100% pure, and it now turns into a range of blends, including the original Quimera. I tasted the 2020 Quimera, when they reduced the new oak to around 60% (in 2020 there'll be around 40% only, and they also bought larger foudres) to keep the blend of varieties done before putting it in barrel, where it matured for 13 months. This is 48% Malbec, 19% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Cabernet Franc, 13% Merlot and 2% Petit Verdot from many zones of Mendoza, Medrano, Lujan de Cuyo, Tupungato, Tunuyán and San Carlos. It's dark, ripe and juicy, with 14.8% alcohol, soft and voluptuous, with the varieties nicely integrated and the oak in the background. Tasted next to the 2019s, it shows how the vintage is ripe and the tannins are not as fine-boned. This is slightly riper and more rustic, but it should get more polished with some time in bottle. 50,436 bottles produced. It was bottled in November 2021.

92 points, Luis Gutiérrez, Wine Advocate (Nov 2022)

A very ripe and generous Quimera here with some mocha, ripe blackberries and baked plums. Plush, rich and generous on the juicy, medium- to full-bodied palate with a flattering finish. 48% malbec, 13% merlot, 18% cabernet franc, 19% cabernet sauvignon and 2% petit verdot. Drink now.

92 points, Zekun Shuai, James Suckling (Apr 2023)

The 2020 Achaval Ferrer Quimera is a blend of 48% Malbec, 19% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Cabernet Franc, 13% Merlot and 2% Petit Verdot from the Uco Valley and Luján de Cuyo. A complex, Bordeaux-style blend, it's dark garnet red in the glass. The ripe nose delivers balsamic notes, hints of herbs and fruity aromas ranging from plum to mulberry over a rich layer of tapenade due to the warm year. Indulgent in the mouth, the finely grained, rounded tannins sculpt a voluminous palate, with a liqueur-like kick. A flavorful red.
