With a third of their Grenache vines are over 100 years of age, Le Vieux Donjon might easily craft an “old vines cuvee” at three times the price – instead, 100% of their exceptional old vine Grenache is blended into this singular outstanding CDP Rouge, the classically styled 95 pt. 2020 Vieux Donjon Rouge Chateauneuf du Pape offering intriguing aromatics and rich dark fruit hinting of peppery garrigue and exotic spice that’s value priced for Southern Rhone fans to stock the cellar.
Established by Marcel Michel in 1966, Vieux Donjon is a relatively new estate now run by third generation siblings Francois Michel and his sister Claire Fabre. Taking over the winemaking from her father in 2013 after training at Napa's Harlan Estate, Claire manages the estate’s 18 hectares of organically farmed vineyards spread across some of the region’s top lieu-dits including Mont Redon and Les Cabrieres in addition to a plot next to Chateau Rayas, planted mostly to old vine Grenache averaging an astounding 85 years of age. After fermenting the Grenache separately in cement tanks, Claire aged the 2020 Vieux Donjon Rouge for 18 months in well-aged foudres and bottled it unfiltered, revealing opulent muscular fruit brimming with classic notes of garrigue and beautifully balanced velvety tannins that’s already a pleasure to enjoy and worthy of aging over a decade or more.
Elegantly crafted from exceptional old vine Grenache and offered at a stellar price, Jeb Dunnuck declares “readers can’t go wrong here,” when describing the 95 pt. 2020 Vieux Donjon Rouge CDP and offers some sage advice, “Buy a case, count yourself lucky, and enjoy bottles any time over the coming 10-15 years.” |
