The 2021 Carménère 1865 Selected Vineyard from Lolol and Peralillo, Colchagua, was aged in mostly American barrels, 10% of them new. Vivid purple in color. The nose offers blackberry and blueberry jam with faint hints of jalapeño and ash. Indulgent, broad and creamy with refined tannins - slightly juicy, fruity flow and a mild finish. This is a well-made, crowd-pleasing red.

Distinctive nose with plenty of dried, grilled herbs and lavender to the nose with a hint of white pepper and briar to the fruit. Vibrant, medium-bodied palate with very fine, silky tannins. Nice length, too, with a spicy, almost linear finish. A wonderful, balanced carmenere that delivers a fresh and well-poised wine from this excellent vintage. Delicious now, but can hold for a few years, too.

The varietal, herbal and spicy 2021 1865 Selected Vineyards Carmenere has contained ripeness and 14% alcohol, a medium-bodied palate and less influence from the aging in barrels than in previous vintages. It is varietal, clean and easy to drink. An improvement. 180,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in September 2022.
