Established east of downtown Paso Robles in the mid-1990’s, Vina Robles’ founders Hans Nef and Hans–R. Michel planted the first of what would later become six vineyards in Paso Robles, gaining notoriety as one of Paso’s top growers and releasing their first critically acclaimed Cabernet Sauvignon in 1999. Now spanning over 1,800 acres of vineyards, Hans’ daughters Michele and Nicole sourced the 2022 Vina Robles Cab from three sustainably farmed estate vineyards in distinctly different areas of the AVA: the hilly Huerhuero Vineyard benefiting from moderating Pacific breezes, the high altitude Creston Valley Vineyard boasting shallow, granulated limestone soils that limit yields, and the Bear Valley Vineyard known for producing small, flavorful berries. Picking the optimally ripened grapes early in the morning to ensure quality, winemaker Kevin Willenborg aged the parcels for 8 months in a mix of French, American and Hungarian oak barrels before conducting extensive blending trials, adding a little Petit Verdot to the final blend and aging the 2022 Vina Robles Cabernet Sauvignon an additional 12 months longer in barrel, yielding a juicy and harmonious Cab with plush texture, opulent fruit and ripe tannins that will have Paso Robles Cab lovers reaching for another pour.
