It's a rare feat to find a benchmark 15-year-old single malt under $150 these days, so we were thrilled when our supplier came to us with an unbelievable offer on this fabulous Highland gem from Deanston. The famed distillery along the River Teith is known for its almost endlessly adaptable "waxy" style of distillate, which lends itself to all manner of experimentation and creative finishing processes. Of course, Master Blender Julieann Fernandez could've taken the safe route and stuck to the tried and true cask-finishing methods, but that would be a waste of a sublime opportunity, and thus we have this truly singular, captivating expression. Aged for 13 years in traditional hogsheads, this bright, beautiful single malt was then finished for two years in premium tequila barrels from Jalisco. The result is an altogether unique profile that takes the classic Highland character in a fascinating new direction with "lots of depth and great balance" according to Whisky Advocate's 94-point review. Our latest parcel comes in at a price that shatters the going market average by more than $100, but it's only available for a limited time, so savvy Scotch fans will want to stock up while they can.

Deanston’s first attempt at a tequila cask finish, this one was aged in oak hogsheads for 13 years before spending an additional 2 years in tequila casks. Fresh and fragrant on the nose, with lime, honey, vanilla, a hint of woodsmoke or barrel char, and green banana. The palate is sweet with key lime pie, fresh lime, and flavorful oak. Lots of depth and great balance. The texture is smooth and viscous. The nice long finish presents more of the same flavors. It’s a pleasant battle between crème brûlée vanilla flavor and the sweet lime of the tequila influence, with marvelous results.
