I recently dined at a Greek restaurant and fell in love with this wine. looked everywhere for it and found it here at B‑21. I bought a case and bonus, they offered free shipping (their $12.00 shipping fee isn't bad either for less than a case). The best part was that it was delivered a day earlier than expected. Would definitely buy here again. Thank you B‑21 for great service.

"Always a winner, I can't remember the last vintage of this cuvée that didn't put a smile on my face." - Jeb Dunnuck

Declared “so reliable” by Jane Anson that it’s “a bellwether to the success of a vintage,” Château La Vieille Cure is considered the standard bearer for Fronsac, its exceptional consistency over the last decade driven by winemaker Jean-Luc Thunevin, the original garagiste pioneer and owner of Château Valandraud, who took the reins in 2013. The 20-hectare La Vieille Cure vineyard is situated in a single, contiguous plot facing Pomerol, planted mostly to Merlot vines averaging 40 years of age with the oldest at over 75 years. This duo of value stunners from 2018 & 2019 puts Anson's words into full perspective, as each rendition captures the quintessential character of the vintage while offering the unmistakable signature of this benchmark Fronsac terroir.

Defined by the vintage's power and opulence, the seductive 2018 La Vieille Cure "is a total pleasure bomb" according to Antonio Galloni, "In a word: fabulous." Jeb Dunnuck likewise sums it up as "a smoking wine that readers should snatch up!" The slightly more refined and approachable 94-point 2019 (again, a hallmark of the vintage) is "just an impeccably made, satisfying, classic Right Bank beauty."

These confirm that Bordeaux continues to be a hotbed of unbeatable values, offering wines of superb sophistication and cellar potential for prices that allow anyone to load the cellar and reap the rewards for years to come.

93JD 93JS 92WA 92V 92WS

The deep ruby-hued 2018 Château La Vieille Cure is a smoking wine that readers should snatch up! Lots of red and black currants, cedary spice, dried tobacco, and a touch of chalky minerality all emerge from the glass, and it's medium to full-bodied, with a fruit-loaded, concentrated mouthfeel, ripe tannins, and outstanding length. It has a touch of background oak, but that should integrate with 2-4 years in the cellar, and this gorgeous Fronsac will shine over the following decade or more.

93 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Mar 2021)

Aromas of plum, blueberry, dark chocolate and walnut husk. Some pine cone, too. It’s medium-to full-bodied with firm, powdery tannins. Chewy, creamy and polished all at once. Extremely well done. Try from 2023.

93 points, James Suckling (Mar 2021)

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2018 La Vieille Cure opens with cedar chest, graphite and tree bark scents, giving way to a core of baked blackberries, stewed plums and cherry compote, with wafts of Sichuan pepper and star anise. The full-bodied palate (15% alcohol) is wearing a lot of oak at this stage, with a good core of baked black fruits and loads of exotic spice accents, supported by grainy tannins and just enough freshness, finishing woody. Give it a good 5 years for the oak to integrated and drink it over the next 12-15 years or more.

92+ points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate (Apr 2021)

The 2018 La Vieille Cure is a total pleasure bomb. Rich, sumptuous and exotically beautiful, the 2018 grabs hold of all the senses and never lets up. Inky dark fruit, spice, new leather, licorice, mocha and chocolate build as this exuberant, deeply layered Fronsac shows off its soft curves and considerable charms. In a word: fabulous.

92 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Mar 2021)

This has a succulent feel, pulling you into its mix of fresh plum, red cherry and raspberry coulis flavors while bergamot and red tea accents stay in the background. Finish is juicy but tightly focused, with an underlying chalky thread lending precision. Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Drink now through 2030. 7,633 cases made.

93V 92WA 92JS

The 2019 Chasse-Spleen is very perfumed on the nose, offering vivid brambly red fruit, leather, undergrowth and cedar aromas that gain intensity with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied and cohesive, with a sappy opening and fine acidity. Lightly spiced, showing plenty of substance on the finish. While not the most consistent estate, Chasse-Spleen has it in its grasp to make great wines, and the 2019 is one of them.

93 points, Neal Martin, Vinous (Feb 2022)

Offering up aromas of cassis, plums, pencil lead and licorice, the 2019 Chasse-Spleen is medium to full-bodied, with a fleshy core of fruit, lively acids and ripe, powdery tannins that assert themselves on the finish with a very civilized expression of Moulis-typical grip. Forget it for a decade and follow it for the next two.

92+ points, William Kelley, Wine Advocate (Apr 2022)

Aromas of cassis, black cherries, licorice, dried tobacco and wet earth. Some leafy character, too. Medium-bodied with chewy tannins and vibrant, juicy fruit character. Firm and compact with hints of crushed stones in the finish. A little timid at the end. 52% cabernet sauvignon, 40% merlot, 6% petit verdot and 2% cabernet franc. Drink after 2024.

2023 Bernard Fouquet Domaine des Aubuisieres Vouvray Cuvee de Silex (750ml)
Chenin Blanc from Vouvray, Loire, France
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

Over his many decades at the renowned Domaine de Aubuisieres, Bernard Fouquet has done as much as anyone to define the Vouvray appellation on the world stage, and the wines have long been fan-favorite best-sellers at B-21. Having entered retirement in 2023, Fouquet handed his treasured domaine to a new generation of talent in winemaker Charles Lesaffre, who continues Fouquet's excellent track record for quality and value.

We've cultivated quite the fanbase for the domaine's entry-level Cuvée de Silex, and after a recent tasting of the newly arrived 2023 vintage, we can confidently say it's another value standout that will thrill long-time fans. Made from 60-year-old vines on ... you guessed it, silex soils, the 2023 conveys its terroir in exceptional fashion. Flinty and mineral to the core, the profile is also imbued with approachably ripe, exotic fruits that make a true crowd-pleaser and cuisine friendly pairing in every sense. Not often do we find benchmark examples with top-tier pedigree for under $20, but the 2023 Cuvée de Silex more than maintains the world-class value reputation that has made it such an admired wine for our clients over the years.

2019 Caiarossa (750ml)
Cabernet Franc from Tuscany, Italy
B-21 Top Recommendation

Located a few miles north of coastal Bolgheri in the Cecina River Valley, the Caiarossa estate boasts a hilly terrain covered with the brilliant red or “rossa” gravelly soil for which it is named, enjoying a steady rise in quality since its purchase in 2004 by Dutch businessman Eric Albada Jelgersma, also owner of Château du Tertre and Château Giscours in Margaux. Divided into distinct parcels and located at around 600 meters of altitude, Caiarossa’s 31 hectares of vines are spread across three sites on the wooded 70 hectare estate, planted with eight different red varietals including Bordeaux grapes Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot, Rhone’s Syrah, Grenache (Alicante), and Mourvedre, and Tuscany’s native Sangiovese, all farmed biodynamically.

This trio of acclaimed recent vintages shows why the estate is a true Tuscan insider's favorite, led by the stunning 96-point 2019, an artful, elegant Super Tuscan blend balancing fresh, layered dark fruit and refined, smooth tannins with powerful structure, showing “impressive depth and textural richness” according to Wine Advocate’s Monica Larner. Antonio Galloni of Vinous calls the 2020 "the best wine I have tasted off this property in some time, perhaps ever" on his way to tagging it with an impressive 95 points. Finally, the epic 2021 Tuscany vintage is on full display with Caiarossa's flagship rendition. Larner remarks, "These results are balanced and bright in this gorgeous vintage, and I especially like the wine's freshness that seems to shine from its core" in her 95-point review, one among a bevy of glowing press across the board from every prominent voice in the critical sphere.

96JS 95WA

This is an intense, full-bodied yet very well-balanced and polished red with velvety, firm and caressing tannins. Ripe black plums, blueberries, chocolate, mocha, sweet spice and dried lavender. Some oyster shells, too. Layered and full of character. Creamy at the end from the polished tannins. 26% syrah, 24% cabernet franc, 23% merlot, 14% cabernet sauvignon, 7% petit verdot, 4% sangiovese and 2% grenache. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drink from 2026.

96 points, James Suckling (Jun 2022)

The Caiarossa 2019 Caiarossa is a complex blend featuring Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Sangiovese, Syrah and Alicante from vineyard sites across this beautiful property in the high hills off the Tuscan coast. This organic and biodynamic wine is full and generous to the palate, yet it never feels heavy or too extracted. The wine is balanced and fresh with thick layers of dark fruit, crushed stone, tobacco and exotic spice.

2019 Orma (750ml)
Merlot from Tuscany, Italy
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

Orma means footprint in Italian and certainly the Sette Ponti estate’s Super Tuscan blend Orma has established a large one – upon its initial release in 2005, wine critic James Suckling declared, “this Bordeaux blend from Bolgheri is a challenger to Sassicaia and Ornellaia.” Nestled between these two estates near the west coast of Tuscany, pioneering proprietor Antonia Moretti and celebrated consulting winemaker Giuseppe Caviola craft the flagship Orma cuvee of 50% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Cabernet Franc, these top Orma vintages rivalling their high-profile neighbors in a range of formats and each delivering exceptional value at a fraction of the price.

  • A rich blend offering “depth and intensity” according to the Wine Spectator’s Bruce Sanderson, the 95 pt. 2017 Orma promises pleasurable drinking over the next five or more years, its lush smooth tannins now beautifully integrated with extended cellaring in magnum format.
  • Described as “a generous and bold blend” by the Wine Advocate’s Monica Larner, the 96 pt. 2018 Orma is “the classic Tuscan blended red with sunshine and power” with balanced, bright acidity reflecting its Italian terroir.
  • Boasting “power and freshness” according to Decanter’s Georgina Hindle, Vinous critic Antonio Galloni describes the 97 pt. 2019 Orma as “seriously compelling,” declaring the outstanding 2019 vintage “full of surprises, in the best sense of the term.”
  • Named one of James Suckling’s Top Wines of Italy in 2022, the 97 pt. 2020 Orma is “fresh and aromatic” according to Decanter’s James Button with “intense, zingy and spicy” fruit while the Wine Advocate’s Monica Larner describes it as “richly concentrated” with “considerable intensity.”
  • Earning top scores from critics across the board, the 96 pt. 2021 Orma “packs a wallop” according to the Wine Independent’s Lisa Perrotti-Brown, offering opulent, richly concentrated spiced fruit and “finishing with an invigorating mineral lift.”
  • Described by Inside Bordeaux’s Jane Anson as a wine that “always brings the finesse,” the 97 pt. 2022 Orma is a “clear Tuscan interpretation of the Bordeaux grapes” according to critic Anson “and a wine to seek out,” its ripe velvety tannins promising over a decade of longevity.

As Orma continues its stellar trajectory vintage over vintage, B-21 collectors and fans of Bordeaux inspired Italian blends will agree with Antonio Galloni of Vinous who declared “Antonio Moretti’s Orma seems to keep getting better with each passing vintage,” this vertical offer a rare opportunity to mix a case and enjoy Orma’s thrilling evolution at unbeatable value pricing.

97JS 95WA

This is a tight and powerful Orma with solid tannins that beautifully frame the fruit in the wine. Full-bodied and focused with intense structure and fruit character. Perhaps the best Orma ever. Give this four or five years to open. Try after 2025.

97 points, James Suckling (Aug 2021)

A blend of 50% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Cabernet Franc, the 2019 Orma opens to a soothing display of ripe fruit with blackberry, candied cherry, spice, white pepper and even a speck of red chili flake. The mouthfeel is round and soft with a pop of sour cherry. The vineyards are planted in soils rich in pebbles and clay with a little sand at 60 meters above sea level. Some 34,000 bottles were produced.

2019 Joanin Becot (750ml)
Merlot from Côtes de Castillon, Bordeaux, France

“This wine made a significant impression on me.”- Yohan Castaing,Wine Advocate

From the lesser travelled Right Bank region producing cooler climate Bordeaux blends with an “enviable reputation” according to Decanter’s James Lawther, the lush and elegant 93 pt. 2019 Joanin Becot offers fresh aromatic and juicy dark fruit with supple, chalky tannins on a lengthy, luxurious finish, a lavish Cotes de Castillon described as a “pure, incredibly elegant, balanced beauty” by Jeb Dunnuck and value priced at a fraction of its St. Emilion neighbors to stock the cellar and enjoy over the next decade.

Located in the commune of Saint Philippe d'Aiguilhe, Chateau Joanin Becot is situated on Bordeaux’s Right Bank on a limestone plateau at some of the highest elevations in the Cotes de Castillon, considered the finest terroir in the region and purchased as a “father-daughter” project of Gerard and Juliette Becot in 2001, the family also well-known as the owners of St. Emilion’s Chateau Beau-Sejour Becot. Home to a number of high-profile vintners including Stephan von Neipperg of Chateau Canon-la-Gaffeliere and La Mondotte and famed consulting enologist Stephane Derenoncourt, Joanin Becot’s 15 hectares of vineyards in the Cotes de Castillon are planted in clay and limestone soils to 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc, the vines averaging around 40 years of age including a parcel of Cab Franc that dates back to 1870. A blend of 75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Franc, winemaker Juliette Becot employed strict plot by plot selection of the hand harvested grapes before aging the 2019 Joanin Becot in a mix of 50% new French oak barrels along with vats, amphorae and tuns, yielding a “vibrant, elegant, yet still concentrated and impeccably made Bordeaux” according to Jeb Dunnuck built to evolve over the next decade and beyond and summed up as “great stuff” by Inside Bordeaux’s Jane Anson.

Declaring the estate one of his favorite producers in the region, the Wine Advocate’s Yohan Castaing noted “what is striking about this estate is the aromatic brilliance of the wines, the precision of the palate and the great value,” the rich and refined 93 pt. 2019 Joanin Becot delivering exceptional quality from an outstanding vintage at a bargain price for Bordeaux collectors to pull the cork and pour freely whenever a taste of Right Bank Bordeaux beckons.

93WA 92JD 92D 91WS 91JS

Juliette Bécot (also of Château Beau-Séjour Bécot in Saint-Émilion) has done great work in this vintage! The 2019 Joanin Bécot reveals an abundance of cassis, blueberry, flower and violet aromas overlaid with a nuance of graphite. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is perfectly balanced and framed by fine, controlled tannins and power. This wine made a significant impression on me.

93 points, Yohan Castaing, Wine Advocate (Apr 2023)

Mulberries, ripe cherries, tobacco leaf, and chalky mineral notes all emerge from the 2019 Château Joanin Bécot, another pure, incredibly elegant, balanced beauty from this family. Readers who love vibrant, elegant, yet still concentrated and impeccably made Bordeaux will love this medium-bodied, seamless 2019 that can be drunk any time over the coming 10-15.

92 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Apr 2022)

Evident freshness from the first moment, plenty of body to the savoury red fruits. Everything is in balance and you get both juice, deepening gourmet touches of chocolate shavings and salinity as it builds to the finish. Great stuff, and low SO2 additions.

92 points, Jane Anson, Decanter (May 2020)

Juicy and direct, featuring a mix of black cherry and red currant fruit that stretches out nicely, with singed alder and tobacco notes and a subtle chalky thread that guides the flavors through the finish. Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Drink now through 2029.

Described as “one of the clear go-to wines in Fronsac” by Inside Bordeaux’s Jane Anson, the opulent 93 pt. 2019 Chateau La Vieille Cure boasts fresh, ripe dark fruit hinting of spiced chocolate with rich, velvety tannins on an elegant finish, an under the radar gem that “dazzles from start to finish” according to Antonio Galloni of Vinous and a top value for Bordeaux fans to stash away and savor over the next decade.

Declared “so reliable” by critic Jane Anson that it’s “a bellwether to the success of a vintage,” Chateau La Vieille Cure is considered a benchmark in the region, its exceptional consistency over the last decade driven by winemaker Jean Luc Thunevin, the well-known consultant and owner of Valandraud who took the reins in 2013. Fermenting the hand harvested grapes with indigenous yeasts, the seductive 2019 La Vieille Cure is a blend of 75% Merlot with 22% Cabernet Franc and 3% Cabernet Sauvignon aged in a third new French oak barrels, yielding a luscious, full-bodied Bordeaux blend that's already a pleasurable pour and summed up by Jeb Dunnuck as a “classic Right Bank beauty to drink over the coming 10-12 years.”

From an outstanding vintage producing rich and structured reds with “wonderful freshness and brightness” according to James Suckling, the elegant 93 pt. 2019 Chateau La Vieille Cure offers stunning quality matching many of the wines of nearby St. Emilion at a bargain price, “a year-in, year-out best value” according to Jeb Dunnuck that “does everything right” and an easy call for Bordeaux bargain hunters seeking a thrilling wine at an equally thrilling price.

93JD 93V 93JS 93WA 92D 91WS

Always a winner, I can't remember the last vintage of this cuvée that didn't put a smile on my face. The 2020 Château La Vieille Cure has lots of up-front cassis and black cherry fruits to go with complex floral, lead pencil, and green tobacco-like aromas and flavors. Medium to full-bodied, seamless, and elegant, it has the vintage's concentrated, pure style front and center. It will evolve for 10-12 years.

93 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Mar 2023)

The 2020 La Vieille Cure is fabulous. Rich and sumptuous in the glass, the 2020 offers up a heady mélange of black cherry, mocha, licorice, plum, incense and chocolate. There's gorgeous depth and texture here. The 2020 is a superb Vieille Cure.

93 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Feb 2023)

A pretty deep and broad-shouldered Fronsac with impressive intensity. Nose has lots of blackcurrants, dark cherries, some cocoa powder and a hint of cigar box. Full-bodied on the palate with dense yet creamy tannins that will take a few more years to integrate. Lengthy and pretty plush. An outstanding Fronsac. Drinkable now, but better from 2025.

93 points, Zekun Shuai, James Suckling (May 2023)

The 2020 La Vieille Cure is medium to deep garnet-purple in color. Broody tar, black truffles, and damp earth notes give way to a fragrant core of baked black plums and fruitcake with a waft of sandalwood. The full-bodied palate is laden with black fruit preserves and exotic spice accents, supported by plush tannins, finishing with great length.

93 points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Independent (Mar 2023)

Fresh and nicely balanced with cool blue fruit, mint and wet stone elements. The texture is dominant, a chalky, crushed velvet aspect to the tannins that coat the mouth, giving structure and weight. Plump and driving, this has good direction with just the most gorgeous cola, blue fruit and cooling mintiness. Doesn't feel too overdone or overworked. Yes, it's still hefty, with power and concentration underneath that extends vertically, and a touch of heat and clove, and tons of liquorice, but feels well presented. Lovely.

92 points, Georgina Hindle, Decanter (Dec 2022)

This has a nice fresh edge to the mix of damson plum and bitter cherry coulis notes, while leather, tobacco and savory hints fill in the background. Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Best from 2023 through 2033. 10,480 cases made, 1,000 cases imported.

From an excellent Rhône vintage boasting “a wealth of beautiful wines” according to Jeb Dunnuck, these top scoring 2020 Tardieu Laurent selections offer Rhône fans and collectors a bounty of outstanding values, meticulously crafted by legendary negociant winemaker Michel Tardieu and his son from low-yielding, old vines throughout the Rhone and well-priced for mixing a case.

Collaborating with a network of long-time growers from bud break to harvest, Michel Tardieu and his son Bastien transport the fermented wines from each grower to their cellars in Provence, employing a unique aging regimen for each cuvee utilizing a mix of new and used French oak barrels and foudres and bottling without filtration or fining. Powerfully concentrated 100% Syrah from the Northern Rhone, the vines for the full-bodied 93-point 2020 Tardieu Laurent Crozes-Hermitage Vieilles Vignes are over 60 years of age, its bright fruit and velvety texture “already delicious” according to Dunnuck, ready to enjoy now with the complexity to evolve over time. From the Northern Rhône 's most iconic appellation, the intense and powerfully built 96-point 2020 Tardieu Laurent Hermitage comes from 100% Syrah over 60 years of age, “a sizable and mighty wine” according to Decanter’s Matt Walls, promising two decades or more of longevity.

Rhône fans and collectors can rely on these top-rated, impeccably sourced 2020 Tardieu Laurent selections to overdeliver value and present a terrific opportunity to stock up on a trio of surefire bets from a master of Rhône terroir, all at unbeatable pricing.

50 year old vines afford serious granitic expression found close to Hermitage. This is serious; excellent.

93 points, Bob Sprentall, B-21 Proprietor (Jan 2024)

Ripe black and blue fruits, bacon fat, violets, and some gamey notes (I'd almost guess Saint Joseph by the aromatics) emerge from the 2020 Crozes-Hermitage Vieilles Vignes, a medium to full-bodied Syrah that shows plenty of classic Crozes opulence and richness on the palate. This sexy, seamless, incredibly satisfying 2020 will keep for at least a decade.

92 points, Jeb Dunnuck (May 2023)

This linear red is introduced by violet and charred plum, with iodine, savory minerals, wet earth and cracked pepper. A medium-bodied, fresh style showing juicy, snappy acidity. Drink now through 2030. 1,000 cases made, 150 cases imported.

2022 Domaine des Malandes Chablis 1er Cru Cote de Lechet (750ml)
Chardonnay from Chablis, Burgundy, France
B-21 Top Recommendation

"...the rate of improvement at this address has surpassed anything I thought possible, and this is now clearly an estate to watch closely."

- William Kelley,Wine Advocate

One of the great recent renaissance stories in Burgundy, Domaine des Malandes has enjoyed a meteoric rise in quality of late, driven by oenologist Guenole Breteaudeau and estate manager Richard Rottiers, whose own acclaimed Beaujolais domaine has propelled that region's upward trajectory through the last decade. An enviable stable of prime vineyard parcels now produces a benchmark line-up that is garnering serious attention once again. We tasted the entire line-up recently, and we can unequivocally say that these 2022s are absolutely enchanting.

Described by Neal Martin of Vinous as “lovely” and “well balanced,” the 92-point 2022 1er Cru Mont de Milieu shows the character of the growing season in its rich tropical notes and bright acidity, while the 93-point 2022 1er Cru Cote de Lechet is a classically styled, steely Chablis with crisp, vibrant fruit and a lengthy, flinty finish, dubbed a “top choice for Chablis purists” by Martin. From two of the region’s best known 1er Crus and both aged in 20% used oak, the 2022 Montmains offers fresh, pure fruit flavors with a “subtle note of wood” according to Decanter’s Andy Howard that’s “all kept in check by some lovely, direct acidity,” while the 2022 Fourchaume boasts “a rich core of fruit, good concentration and bright acids” according to Wine Advocate’s William Kelley. Two outstanding Grand Crus sourced from old vine parcels showcase the heights of the domaine's potential excellence. The WA93 “satiny and suave" Vaudesir is “a fine success," while Kelley describes the 94-point Les Clos as “deep and layered” with 15 or more years of aging ahead. Both are matured in a mix of mainly neutral large oak barrels and stainless steel and rank among Kelley’s top picks of the vintage, along with Chablis royalty Raveneau and Dauvissat.

As Martin notes, Chablis "continues to offer a slew of affordable alternatives to Cote de Beaune whites,” clearly demonstrated in these selections from Domaine des Malandes, which are easily among the region’s most undervalued gems.

The 2022 Chablis 1er Cru Côte de Léchet is a standout in the range this year, unfurling in the glass with scents of crisp orchard fruit, lime zest, buttery pasty and oyster shell, followed by a medium to full-bodied, satiny and concentrated palate that's taut and saline, retaining a strong Chablisien signature despite the warm vintage. It's produced from a heavily virused parcel that always delivers low yields.

2019 Chateau Leoville Poyferre (750ml)
Cabernet Sauvignon from Saint-Julien, Bordeaux, France
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

Sourced from over 80 hectares of estate vineyards in some of St. Julien’s best terroir, these exceptional vintages from Chateau Leoville-Poyferre boast Cabernet’s Sauvignon’s expressive dark fruit with elegant textured minerality and smooth, silky tannins, all luxurious, balanced Left Bank Bordeaux blends earning 94 plus point ratings and delivered ex-Chateau in perfect provenance at impressive value pricing.

While dating back to 1638, Chateau Leoville-Poyferre’s modern renaissance began in 1979, when Didier Cuvelier became the first member of his family to take charge of the estate after studying winemaking under the legendary Emile Peynaud. Implementing an extensive renovation of the vineyards with massive replanting and nearly doubling the estate’s holdings, Didier hired renowned consultant Michel Rolland to manage the harvest and refine the final blend, shifting the estate’s emphasis to Cabernet Sauvignon and crafting the Grand Vin in a richer, more opulent style by harvesting later to ensure even ripening.

Revisiting it at a retrospective tasting in 2021, James Suckling describes the full-bodied 100 pt. 2009 Leoville-Poyferre as “A red that gives wonderful pleasure now but will continue to do so for decades ahead.” Vinous critic Antonio Galloni calls the 95 pt. 2014 Leoville-Poyferre “Gorgeous” and “Super impressive” while Jeb Dunnuck describes the 97 pt. 2015 Leoville-Poyferre as an “unctuous, ripe, pedal-to-the-metal beauty." Dunnuck calls the 98 pt. 2016 Leoville-Poyferre a “brilliantly concentrated, full-bodied, opulent beast of a wine,” while the Wine Advocate’s Lisa Perrotti-Brown describes it as “simply alive in the mouth, culminating in an epically long finish that will leave your mouth practically tingling. WOW!” James Suckling calls the “serious” 95 pt. 2017 Leoville-Poyferre “one of the best of the appellation” while the Wine Enthusiast’s Roger Voss named both the 2017 and 2018 Cellar Selections built for the long haul. Finally, the “legendary” 100 pt. 2018 Leoville-Poyferre is a “a total thrill that tops my scale” according to critic Jeb Dunnuck while Antonio Galloni declares the perfect 2018 “dazzles from start to finish,” earning it the #7 spot on the Wine Spectator Top 100 Wines of 2021.

All poised to reward Bordeaux lovers for decades to come, these perfectly cellared, top releases from Second Growth Chateau Leoville-Poyferre delivers powerfully concentrated fruit of exceptional depth and length with rich, ripe tannins, now offered at specially negotiated pricing, some ready to enjoy and all set to evolve in the cellar. After a recent retrospective tasting over the last two decades, Vinous critic Neal Martin summed it up: “Leoville-Poyferre has really taken flight” often "challenging the First Growths" and now offered in perfect condition at a fraction of the price.

The flagship 2019 Château Léoville Poyferré is based on 66% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, and the balance Petit Verdot. It's one of the bigger, richer wines in the vintage and has a gorgeous, thrilling, full-bodied style as well as notes of crème de cassis, tobacco leaf, violets, and chocolate. While many estates seem to be playing it safe and focusing on so-called elegance and balance, I love that Poyferré continues to make a ripe, sexy, beautifully textured wine that always offers more opulence and sexiness than most in the vintage. Ranking with the crème de la crème of the vintage, this gorgeous Poyferré can be enjoyed any time over the coming 40-50 years. Bravo!

98 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Apr 2022)

The 2019 Léoville-Poyferré is creamy, racy and voluptuous to the core. Bright red cherry/plum fruit, blood orange, mint, spice and menthol fill out the layers with effortless grace. In some tastings, the 2019 has come across as quite powerful, while in other moments it shows greater finesse. Either way, the 2019 is positively stunning. I very much admire its energy and persistence. Tasted three times.

97 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Feb 2022)

Powerful, seductive, sexy and balanced, this has tension right from the start, coiled textured tannins that have grip, salinity and vibrancy. Creamy damson, blackberry and smoked vanilla pod expand through the mid palate. I loved it En Primeur but it has improved since and this is an upscore from the 96 points I gave it at my last tasting. Harvest September 22 to October 11. 80% new oak.

97 points, Jane Anson (Sep 2021)

The 2019 Léoville Poyferré is showing very well in bottle, wafting from the glass with aromas of crème de cassis and wild berries mingled with notions of licorice, loamy soil, cigar wrapper and smoke. Full-bodied, velvety and polished, it's broad and enveloping, with an ample core of fruit, ripe tannins and succulent acids, concluding with a long, precise finish. Invariably the most sumptuous of the three Léovilles, featuring some 35% Merlot, the 2019 is a terrific effort that will offer a wide drinking window.

96 points, William Kelley, Wine Advocate (Apr 2022)

Throws off gorgeous warmed plum, blueberry reduction and açaí berry compote aromas and flavors, laced with ganache and sweet tobacco from start to finish. Delivers ample structure in the guise of a cold cast iron note buried underneath the showy fruit, with a flash of violet for treble in the background. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Best from 2025 through 2040. 15,000 cases made.

The 2015 Leoville Poyferre is cut from the same cloth as the 2016, yet is more sexy, rounded and opulent. Notes of cassis, licorice, crushed rocks, lead pencil shavings and graphite all emerge from this unctuous, ripe, pedal-to-the-metal beauty that's absolutely loaded with fruit and texture. Reminding me of the 2003, yet only fresher, don't miss this beauty. It should be drinkable in 3-4 years and last for 3-4 decades. The blend of the 2015 is 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot, 6% Petit Verdot and 3% Cabernet Franc.

97 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Nov 2017)

The 2015 Léoville-Poyferré is spectacular. Inky, dense and explosive, the 2015 possesses off the chart richness, with soft contours, no hard edges and exceptional balance. All the elements are simply fused together. inky blue/purplish fruit, chocolate, new leather, blueberry jam, exotic spice and violet notes are all beautifully delineated throughout. Fresh, vibrant and totally sexy, Léoville-Poyferré is one of the wines of the vintage. Don't miss it! Tasted two times.

97 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Feb 2018)

Following the style that this estate has now adopted, this is an ultrarich, concentrated wine. However its acidity and bright black-currant fruits contrast well with this solid base. Drink this impressive wine from 2026.

96 points, Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast (Feb 2018)

A rich and intense red with blackberries, tar and spices. Black tea and blueberries. Full-bodied, very layered and multi-dimensional. Very long and flavorful. Such great texture. A dynamic and superb red. Drink in 2023.

96 points, James Suckling (Feb 2018)

Right off the first nose, this is young, generous, powerful yet subtle, nuanced, full of grace and power. Raspberry and blackberry fruits feel open and generous right now, so you could take advantage of this window and drink it over the next year or so with a carafe, but those tannins are menacing and hinting that pretty soon the fist will close around the fruit. Smoked cedar fills out the mid palate. Excellent. Harvest September 24 to October 10. 80% new oak.

96 points, Jane Anson (Sep 2021)

The 2015 Leoville Poyferre is medium to deep garnet colored. It needs a fair bit of coaxing to unlock notes of blueberry pie, kirsch, and blackcurrant pastilles, plus touches of garrigue, potpourri, and dusty soil. The medium-bodied palate is very tightly wound and youthful still, delivering a frame of firm, ripe tannins and tons of freshness, finishing long and earthy.

96 points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate (Jun 2022)

Dark plum cake, blueberry reduction and açaí berry fruit tilts this to the exotic side of the ledger, with warm ganache, melted black licorice and tar notes providing the spine through the lush finish. Displays some serious latent grip, so there's no rush despite the showy fruit. Best from 2022 through 2040. 18,439 cases made.

A gorgeous wine, the 2019 Château Pédesclaux shines for its pure, elegant, yet concentrated style, and it's certainly one of the finest vintages from this address. Cassis, black cherries, lead pencil, and violet notes all emerge on the nose, and it's medium to full-bodied, with a seamless, elegant mouthfeel, ripe, polished tannins, and a great finish. The purity and finesse are truly something here, and while it already offers pleasure, it deserves 4-5 years of bottle age and will evolve for 20+ years.

94+ points, Jeb Dunnuck (Apr 2022)

This is really floral and beautiful with lavender, lilac and blackcurrant aromas that follow through to a medium to full body with firm, creamy tannins and a flavorful finish. It’s very racy and refined with structure. Linear. 72% cabernet sauvignon, 20% merlot, 6% cabernet franc and 2% petit verdot. Best after 2024.

94 points, James Suckling (Feb 2022)

The 2019 Pédesclaux is quirky and full of character. It offers a beguiling mix of super-ripe dark fruit and savory Cabernet coupled with accents that offer a striking counterpoint. Black cherry, chocolate, new leather, spice, tobacco, incense and scorched earth lead into the substantial finish. There's more raciness than finesse in this Pauillac, but it all works well.

2022 Antinori Cervaro della Sala (750ml)
Chardonnay from Umbria, Italy
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

Twenty-six generations of the Antinori family have built upon a family dynasty dating to 1385 when Antinori's ancestors joined the Florentine Guild of Vintners. Having developed estates in Tuscany's finest and most progressive viticultural areas of Montalcino, Chianti Classico and Montepulciano, they turned their sights to Umbria, and the 14th century Castello della Sala in the city of Orvieto. Originally owned by one of the most powerful, noble families of Orvieto, the Monaldeschi – feudatories of Charlemagne, King of the Franks – the Castello della Sala represents the ancient history of Umbria, passing through multiple noble families until being acquired by the Antinori family in 1940.

Fast-forward to 1979, Renzo Cotarella arrived, and, in less than ten years, created the wines which would come to symbolize this historic estate. A famous, professional agronomist, Cotarella launched an ambitious project of varietal substitution; a program aimed at producing white wines of greater personality than those produced in the Orvieto Classico appellation at the time. Chardonnay would become the backbone of Cotarella's new masterpiece, with the local Grechetto grape utilized (10-15%) for balancing acidity.

Cervaro della Sala stands as a benchmark today; a wine which resonates so forcefully within its category that it has become emblematic of the category itself.

Produced from four vineyards in the Eola-Amity Hills, the bright 94 pt. 2022 Walter Scott La Combe Verte Pinot Noir offers pure, earthy fruit “back by juicy acidity and silky tannins” according to the Wine Enthusiast’s Michael Alberty, calling the entry level offering a “great buy.” A cellar selection bridging the gap between the La Combe Verte and the single vineyard cuvees, the fresh and vibrant 94 pt. 2022 Walter Scott Cuvee Ruth Pinot Noir boasts “ripe wild berry fruits and juicy acidity” according to Eric Guido of Vinous, describing it as “wonderfully complex and refined, making it a fantastic value.” From the iconic vineyard located in the new Mount Pisgah Polk County AVA, the dark fruited and intense 97 pt. 2022 Walter Scott Freedom Hill Vineyard Pinot Noir is “silky and fresh” according to the Wine Advocate’s Erin Brooks with rich, velvety tannins on a palate that’s “seamless yet powerful.” Boasting “masses of ripe orchard fruits and salty minerals,” Eric Guido of Vinous calls the 95 pt. 2022 Walter Scott Justice Vineyard Chardonnay “a beast of a wine" boasting a silky texture and substantial depth. The elegant 94 pt. 2022 Walter Scott Justice Vineyard Pinot Noir is “a wine of intense brilliance” according to Decanter’s Clive Pursehouse with layers of velvety tannins that will “undoubtedly transform beautifully over time."

From their benchmark Chardonnays that are “easily some of the best examples I have tasted” according to critic Eric Guido to their “pretty amazing” Pinots, these 2022 Walter Scott selections are well priced for their loyal fans to stock up as well as lovers of Oregon wines looking to explore this exceptional portfolio – echoing Vinous critic Neal Martin who counts Walter Scott among his great discoveries, “If you have not tried these wines yet, do yourself a favor."

The 2022 Pinot Noir La Combe Verte was sourced from vineyards planted on both volcanic and sedimentary soils, including Distraction, Freedom Hill, Sojeau, Temperance Hill and Witness Tree. Matured for 10 months in 25% new French oak, it opens with flinty reduction that gives way to cranberry, pomegranate, raspberry, forest floor and bitters. The palate offers bright, spicy red fruit, tea-textured tannins, vibrant acidity and a long, pure finish. Complex and expressive, the 2022 La Combe Verte is approachable now, although it will develop savory complexity in bottle over the next decade or more. 1,480 cases produced.

94 points, Erin Brooks, Wine Advocate (Feb 2024)

Bright acidity and an eagerness to please the minute you open the bottle are the La Combe Vert's calling cards. The boysenberry aromas fit nicely with the wine's other aromas of thyme and meat grilling over a wood fire. A tart blackberry flavor is accented by saline and cedar, backed by juicy acidity and silky tannins. Great buy.

92 points, Michael Alberty, Wine Enthusiast (Jul 2024)

A pungent and slightly reductive note announces the aromatics of La Combe Verte Pinot Noir. Several Eola-Amity sites are blended with fruit from the Mt Pisgah AVA's Freedom Hill—the site's old vines offer plenty of oomph to this wine. Feral forest floor elements mingle with dried violets and dried savoury herbs on the aromatics. The palate is amply structured, and mouth-watering acids create a canvas for the wild blackberry and mint flavours to meld with blood orange and white pepper notes.

Described by Eric Guido of Vinous as masterful expressions of their Tuscan terroir, these top rated Avignonesi selections range from two 100% Sangiovese wines to a highly rated Cabernet Sauvignon and Sangiovese blend, an array of deliciously savory Tuscan reds crafted near the medieval town of Montepulciano at bargain pricing perfect for mixing a case.

After purchasing the historic Avignonesi winery in 2009, energetic owner Virginie Saverys began transforming the estate vineyards to sustainable viticulture while expanding the estate’s holdings to 175 hectares over the next decade, becoming the largest biodynamic certified winery in Italy. Located in Italy’s first and oldest red wine appellation at altitudes ranging up to 375 meters above sea level, the estate’s rolling vineyards in western Tuscany are planted in sedimentary soils of calcareous limestone, clay and sand, each parcel identified through an extensive geographic study and vinified separately in Avignonesi’s state-of-the-art cellars. Crafted from 100% Sangiovese and aged for 6 months in oak barrels, the fresh and juicy 91 pt. 2021 Avignonesi Rosso di Montalcino is described as “a pure expression of the Tuscan grape” by the Wine Advocate’s Monica Larner boasting fragrant, lightly spiced fruit layered with silky tannins on a refined, mineral finish and ready to enjoy over the next five or so years. While many wineries in the region adhere to the minimum 70%, the enticing 94 pt. 2020 Avignonesi Vino Nobile di Montepulciano is crafted from 100% Sangiovese, revealing bright fruit “with well-integrated tannins and lively acidity” according to the Wine Spectator’s Bruce Sanderson that will continue to evolve for another 10 years or more. Described as “long, fresh and juicy” by James Suckling, the elegant 93 pt. 2020 Avignonesi Grifi is a 50-50 blend of Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon aged for 24 months in French oak barriques and large Slavonian oak casks, revealing robust, luscious fruit and harmonious acidity with layers of tannins promising nearly a decade of enjoyment.

Wild Turkey Kentucky Spirit B-21 Single Barrel Select Bourbon (750ml)

"Fans of the Russell Family magic will not be disappointed with this one."

- Andrew Kitz, B-21 Spirits Buyer

Half the fun of being a whiskey fanatic is discovering the endless array of nuance and detail in your favorite styles and brands. The best way to do that is often in single barrels, and this hand-picked, B-21 exclusive from the iconic Wild Turkey is a prime example. The Russell family's benchmark distillery has been setting the tone in Kentucky bourbon for generations, starting with their first-in-the-game, single-barrel bottlings. The Kentucky Spirit line offers singular profiles that still bear the hallmark Wild Turkey character, and that's exactly what we found in barrel #22-0310. An unmistakably spice-driven aromatic profile practically shouts this bourbon's reference-point pedigree, while the palate takes the familiar 101-proof intensity up a notch with nuanced opulence and sweetness that bring an extra dimension to the characteristically savory flavors. If you're a fan of Wild Turkey, this barrel will give you everything you're looking for and then some.

92AK

Selecting single barrels is always a delicate endeavor, especially from a brand with such a devoted following as Wild Turkey. For sure, we’re looking for a distinct profile that makes that particular barrel stand out, but we don’t want any wild departures from the signature character that earned the whiskey its legions of fans in the first place. With that in mind, barrel #22-0310 hits the mark on all counts. Bottled in March of 2022 from Warehouse A, Rick #2, it pours a bright orange hue with flecks of red in the center and leads with a hallmark, spice-driven nose that just screams Wild Turkey. Notes of sawdust, cinnamon, candied orange peel, and rich toffee emerge with a bit of air, while subtle heat sits in the background. On the palate, this bourbon carries its 101 proof with authority (exactly how Wild Turkey is meant to be), needing a few drops of water to really round out and open up. The nose picks up extra definition with orange oil, Christmas cookies, vanilla wafers, pumpkin pie spice, and fine sandalwood, while the palate becomes noticeably more approachable, taking on flavors of spicy jerky, mulled citrus, more pumpkin pie, and green peppercorn, all culminating in a smooth even finish with a slight medicinal touch. Fans of the Russell Family magic will not be disappointed with this one.

"The expressive, complex and nuanced 2016 Prado Enea Gran Reserva is a textbook traditional Rioja in the making ... with all the components in the right proportion to age superbly in bottle." - Luis Gutiérrez, Wine Advocate

A universally lauded expression of this classic Rioja Gran Reserva, the 2016 boasts towering press including no fewer than four 97-point scores, putting it in rarified air among the greatest vintages of this Spanish icon in the 21st century. "A brilliant wine with a solid two decades of prime drinking ahead of it" per Jeb Dunnuck, this is collectible Rioja class at its very best.

97WA 97WI 97JS 96V

The expressive, complex and nuanced 2016 Prado Enea Gran Reserva is a textbook traditional Rioja in the making. 2016 was a very elegant year, with aging potential, volume and very good acidity and freshness. It's full-bodied but fine-boned, has 14.5% alcohol, a pH of 3.6 and 5.25 grams per liter acidity. It has terrific balance, with all the components in the right proportion to age superbly in bottle. They have also been working on the selection of wood used. This wine matured in French and American oak barrels for three years, and the oak is super integrated. 127,808 bottles produced. It was bottled in January 2020. It was an exceptional year with volume and quality.

97+ points, Luis Gutiérrez, Wine Advocate (Feb 2024)

Deep ruby in color, this wine has a nose of cocoa powder, coffee bean, lavender and cherry. It is smooth at first sip, with tannins that slowly build in volume and then drift away to reveal black cherry, blackberry, chocolate, mint and orange-zest flavors. The brilliant finish is marked with a floral note. Drink through 2036.

97 points, Mike DeSimone, Wine Enthusiast (Jul 2024)

Complex aromas of dark fruit with violets, walnuts and chocolate. Classy. It's full-bodied with plush yet fine velvety tannins, and a precise and pointed finish. Juicy and savory. Tight finish. It's very long. This is beautiful now but will be even better in three or four years. Linear and vertical at the same time. Try after 2026.

97 points, James Suckling (Nov 2023)

Aged in barrel for 36 months, the 2016 Gran Reserva Prado Enea is a blend of Tempranillo, Garnacha, Mazuelo and Graciano from Rioja Alta. This dark garnet wine reveals thyme, plum and sour cherry notes, accompanied by reductive nuances of matchstick and saffron. Additionally, it displays hints of biscuit, wax and dried flowers. On the palate, it is dry, supple and chalky, with a juicy, energetic flow that leads to a long-lasting, complex finish. While the leaner style brought on by the cold vintage may appear slightly unsubstantial for Prado Enea lovers, it remains absolutely delicious.

From a California vintage described as “amazing” by James Suckling, these highly rated 2021 Marietta Cellars selection are crafted in a “deliciously drinkable style” according to Jeb Dunnuck, a wide range of vineyard-focused cuvees sourced exclusively from estate fruit and affordably priced for stocking up by the case.

Established by third generation Sonoma native Chris Bilbro over four decades ago, Marietta Cellars has continued its founder’s legacy of producing exceptional, reasonably priced California wines under his son Scot since 2012, sourcing the portfolio from over 400 acres of organically farmed estate vineyards. Crafted from mostly old vine Syrah dating back to the late 1800’s, the sumptuous 93 pt. 2021 Marietta Christo boasts ripe, succulent dark fruit hinting of peppery herbs with zesty acidity, a silky Rhone blend with integrated tannins promising to evolve over the next decade. The powerful 93 pt. 2021 Marietta Arme is an impressive Bordeaux style blend dominated by rich California Cabernet Sauvignon described as “incredibly elegant” by the Wine Advocate’s Erin Brooks. Sourced from the 35-acre Angeli Vineyard first planted in the late 1880’s, the 96 pt. 2021 Marietta Angeli is a blend of old vine Zinfandel with small amounts of Petite Sirah and Syrah aged in neutral barrels, offering bright, spiced fruit with a seamless, silky texture and harmonious tannins built to satisfy a Zinfandel craving over the next decade and called “absolutely delicious” by Vinous critic Antonio Galloni.. Sourced from old vine Syrah planted over a century ago, the powerful 95 pt. 2021 Marietta Gibson Block Syrah is “intensely bold and savory” according to Antonio Galloni of Vinous, revealing richly concentrated fruit hinting of graphite with refined, integrated tannins and vibrant acidity, summed up as “absolutely delicious” by critic Galloni and promising to mature gracefully in the cellar for another ten years or more.

Living up to Marietta’s long-time reputation for over delivering value, Antonio Galloni of Vinous declared “Scot Bilbro has the magic touch when it comes to crafting wines that deliver superb quality for the money across the various tiers in this range,” these unbeatably priced 2021 Marietta selections an opportunity for Marietta fans to stock up on their favorites and for newbies to mix a case and enjoy Marietta’s combination of exceptional quality and outstanding bang for the buck.

96WA

Grapes for the 2021 Angeli Zinfandel are picked in three passes. Proprietor Scot Bilbro notes that Zinfandel's naturally varying levels of ripeness can lead to raisiny flavors if all the grapes are picked at a higher brix. "If you bring Zinfandel in over 25 brix, that means the juice inside is at 25, but the skins have a lot more sugar, and the level will go up to 28 or more," he explains. "So, we pick at 23, 24 and just shy of 25. You can enable the wine to show off layers with those different picks." This strategy led to a gorgeous Angeli in 2021 that is incredibly expressive and perfumed. Blueberry, boysenberry and blackberry give way to wafts of graphite, gobs of violet and even touches of tangerine. The medium to full-bodied palate explodes with concentrated fruit and expansive layers of floral perfume and spice. It has a powdery frame, bursts of mouthwatering acidity and a very long, nuanced finish.

Jacquesson Cuvee 746 (750ml)
Chardonnay from Champagne, France

“Champagnes of naked purity and brilliance...” - Antonio Galloni, Vinous

The elegant. 95-point Jacquesson Cuvee No. 746 is a silky, richly layered Champagne revealing a core of fresh, mouthwatering fruit with a delicate, finely beaded mousse on a long, racy finish, an irresistible, vineyard-driven cuvee from a top grower estate unbeatably priced for Champagne lovers and collectors to stock the cellar.

Just a few minutes from Epernay in the small village of Dizy, Champagne Jacquesson has a long history as an innovator in the region as one of the Champagne’s oldest houses, among the first in the region to plant vines in rows under the advisement of pioneering viticulturist Dr. Jules Guyot, patenting the wire basket known as the muselet that continues as the standard for holding sparkling wine corks in place and predating Champagne Krug by nearly a half century before Johann-Joseph Krug left his role as cellarmaster at Jacquesson to form his eponymous house in 1843. Eventually purchased by the Chiquet family in 1974, brothers Jean-Herve and Laurent Chiquet have been the force behind the estate’s laser focus on producing vineyard driven Champagne, sustainably farming their 28 hectares of Grand Cru and 1er Cru vineyards while lowering yields and transforming their business with the creation of the sequentially numbered, vintage-based Cuvee, numbering the first release in 2004 as Cuvee 728 to mark the estate’s 728th wine produced. Described by Champagne expert Peter Liem as “consistently one of the best non-vintage Bruts on the market,” the Jacquesson 746 consists of mostly Chardonnay with smaller amounts of Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier sourced from three Grand Crus (Ay, Avize and Oiry) and two 1er Crus (Dizy and Hautvillers), consisting of a base from the exceptional 2018 vintage blended with about 25% from one of the oldest reserve wine collections in Champagne. Vinified in large old oak foudres, the enticing Jacquesson 746 aged on the lees for 4 years before disgorgement and was bottled without filtration with a minimal dosage of 2 grams per liter, offering both “immediacy as well as structure,” according to Jeb Dunnuck's Champagne critic Audrey Frick, that will continue to provide lasting enjoyment over the next decade and beyond.

Described as “absolutely delicious” by Antonio Galloni of Vinous, the luxurious 95-point Jacquesson 746 is a testament to the quality legacy of the Chiquet brothers bottled prior to the estate’s sale to Artemis Domaines in 2022, ranking among the region’s top values at a fraction of the price of similarly crafted Grand Marque cuvees and a great deal on an impressive artisan Champagne worthy of celebrating and sharing.

95WI 94JD 93JS

Based on the generous 2018 vintage, the 746 fills the glass with a pale pink nuclear explosion of fine bubbles forming columns of visible freshness. A blend of 60% Chardonnay, 30% Pinot Noir and 10% Pinot Meunier, it is perfumed and succulent with slightly oxidized notes of ripe red apple mixed in with lemon confit, rose water, chalk dust and hints of spice. The medium to full-bodied palate is plush with showy red fruit that shimmers amid a vibrant acid energy that brings loads of freshness to the long finish. Disgorged February 2023 and finished with a two gram per liter dosage. 242,012 bottles, 9,770 magnums and 398 jeroboams were produced.

95 points, Sarah Mayo, Wine Independent (Nov 2023)

Based on the 2018 vintage, which was an early solar ripe vintage, the NV Champagne Cuvée 746 sees two grams per liter of dosage and is about 50% Chardonnay, the rest Pinot Noir and Meunier, and approximately 25% reserve wine. It pours a highly reflective straw hue and is aromatically forward out of the gate, with savory appeal and notes of citrus oil as well as juicy ripe berries. The palate is juicy and inviting, with approachable silky fruit and a fine mousse. It has wonderful balance, with the warmth from the vintage, and immediacy as well as structure that should provide a good bit of longevity over the coming 10-15 years.

This shows a rich and rather flamboyant character from the heat of 2018, giving a full and flavorful array of brioche and ripe apple, apple tart and dried pineapple. With the latest arrivals from the 2023 vintage, it's clear that the domaine turned out another fine range of sharp buys, led by the always reliable, "very haromnious" Vieilles Vignes de Sainte Claire.

Made from vines all planted before 1970, this is as consistent a performer as you'll find in its price tier, the latest rendition being "well balanced with a fine line of acidity, quite tensile with pleasing weight," according to Martin. Redolent of old-vine complexity with "clearly a greater weight of fruit," the 2023 VV Sainte-Claire is that perfect go-to candidate that will offer Chablis fans all the hallmark terroir character that they're looking for at a best-in-market price that makes it easy to open on any occasion.

The 2023 Chablis Vieilles Vignes de Sainte Claire comes from 50-60 year old vines. Clearly a level up from the regular cuvée. 2020 Mazzei Siepi (750ml)
Sangiovese from Tuscany, Italy
B-21 Top Recommendation

An exceptional Super Tuscan combining the power and roundness of Merlot with Sangiovese’s structure and acidity, the outstanding 98 pt. 2020 Siepi boasts ripe, plush fruit hinting of savory herbs and spice with “enormous elegance and depth” according to the Wine Advocate’s Monica Larner, hinting at its potential for evolving greatness and of course a Top 100 from James Suckling.

Just eight miles from Siena in the historic village of Fonterutoli, 24 generations of the Mazzei family have been owners of the Fonterutoli Castle in Chianti Classico since 1435, boasting a rich legacy of crafting exceptional wines as one of the oldest winemaking families in Italy and the world. Known for being the first winery to plant Merlot in the region over three decades ago, Mazzei’s 2020 Siepi is a 50-50 blend of Merlot and Sangiovese, sourced from vines ranging from 22 to 35 years of age. Located on a southeast-facing plateau between 220 and 310 meters above sea level, the organically farmed 14-hectare Siepi vineyard is planted on a well-draining alberese mix of clay and marl encircled by forests that cools the vineyard and prevents over-ripening in warmer years like 2020. After hand harvesting the grapes and fermenting the parcels in stainless steel, winemaker Gionata Pulignani aged the varietals separately, Merlot for 18 months in 70% new French barriques and Sangiovese for 16 months in 70% new tonneaux, before blending the 2020 Siepi, aging it an additional 4 months in concrete tanks and 4 months in bottle, yielding a powerful, harmonious blend with elegant, integrated tannins described as “an exceptionally beautiful wine” by Decanter’s Georgina Hindle.

Crafted to offer immediate and youthful enjoyment but built for the long haul, the outstanding 98 pt. 2020 Siepi seamlessly integrates the best qualities of Merlot and Sangiovese, offering vibrant energetic fruit with mouthwatering acidity and “fabulous length” according to critic James Suckling, with layered complexity to “age gracefully for decades,” delivering exceptional value and one that collectors and lovers of Italian wine will want to make room for in the cellar.

Crafted in a cooler 2022 Washington State vintage producing “aromatic, elegant and approachable” wines according to Eric Guido of Vinous, the silky and plush 93 pt. 2022 J. Bookwalter Foreshadow Cabernet Sauvignon offers aromatic ripe dark fruit layered with supple, integrated tannins, one of the year’s top scoring Columbia Valley Cabs unbeatably priced to enjoy often.

After building a solid reputation in viticulture in California’s San Joaquin Valley, pioneering Washington state grower Jerry Bookwalter moved to the Columbia Valley in the early 1970’s to manage the plantings of three famed Washington vineyards, Sagemoor, Bacchus and Dionysus, and eventually became manager of the Conner Lee Vineyard, renowned as the source of richly textured, balanced and complex wines. Providing grapes to many small, high-quality wineries including Leonetti Cellars and Woodward Canyon, Bookwalter was inspired to launch his own winery in 1982 and with the help of his son John, changed the winery’s focus to produce higher end reds from Cabernet Sauvignon in the 1990’s under the J. Bookwalter Winery label. A blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot, 5% Syrah and 3% Petit Verdot sourced primarily from the Conner Lee Vineyard, the refined and full-bodied 2022 J. Bookwalter Foreshadow was aged for 18 months in a mix of new and neutral French oak, yielding a luscious, structured Cab with a lingering, spiced finish and substantial velvety tannins built for a decade or more of evolution.

  • Declared one of Margaux’s “rising stars” by Antonio Galloni of Vinous, the elegant and deliciously intense 97 pt. 2020 Chateau Giscours is a blend of 56% Cabernet Sauvignon and 44% Merlot revealing rich, aromatic fruit hinting of subtle spice and crushed gravel, with silky, integrated tannins and “one heck of a great finish” according to Jeb Dunnuck. Crafted by esteemed winemaker Lorenzo Pasquini before his move to D’Yquem, the enticing 2020 Chateau Giscours was aged in 50% new French oak for 17 months, “already impressive” with “serious potential” over the next several decades according to the Wine Enthusiast’s Roger Voss.

96V 96JS 95WA 94JD 94WI

The 2020 Giscours is every bit as compelling as it was from barrel. Succulent dark cherry, plum, new leather, licorice, menthol and mocha fill out the layers nicely. There's a good bit of Merlot in this year, which lends quite a bit of mid-palate juiciness and textural depth, but there is also plenty of supporting structure underneath. The 2020 is both flamboyant and serious, a pretty appealing combination, I have to say. Tasted two times.

96 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Feb 2023)

Fascinating aromas of blueberries, crushed stone, and blackcurrants. Very aromatic. Full-bodied with juicy tannins that are creamy and intense. Slightly bitter, burnt citrus character. This is very muscular with velvety tannins. Needs time to soften. Try after 2025 but will age a long time.

96 points, James Suckling (May 2023)

This estate is now enjoying its finest run since its glory days in the 1970s, and the 2020 Giscours is excellent. Unwinding in the glass with deep aromas of blackberries, cassis, pencil shavings, rose petals and sweet, loamy soil, it's medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy, with a layered and seamless mid-palate, excellent concentration and powdery structuring tannins.

95+ points, William Kelley, Wine Advocate (Apr 2023)

The Grand Vin 2020 Château Giscours is based on 56% Cabernet Sauvignon and 44% Merlot that spent 17 months in 50% new French oak. It has a gorgeous perfume of pure cassis, graphite, and flowers that gives way to a medium to full-bodied Margaux possessing ample tannins, a layered, concentrated mid-palate, remarkable purity, and one heck of a great finish. It’s another beautiful Margaux in the vintage that will benefit from 4-5 years of bottle age and evolve for at least two decades.

94+ points, Jeb Dunnuck (Mar 2023)

The 2020 Giscours, 50% Cabernet Sauvignon and 50% Merlot, is deep garnet-purple in color. It wafts gracefully from the glass with pretty notes of raspberry coulis, Morello cherries, and crushed blackcurrants, plus touches of garrigue, bay leaves, and iron ore. The medium-bodied palate is silky and beautifully poised, delivering delicate red berry and savory layers, finishing on a mineral note.

No name in California wine history is as synonymous with Napa Cabernet as Robert Mondavi. Sourced from this revered estate's iconic To Kalon vineyard, an undisputed California "grand cru," the 2021 The Estates Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon makes the most of its pedigree and this acclaimed Napa vintage. A bevy of glowing praise, including 95 points from Decanter and 94 points each from Antonio Galloni and Jeb Dunnuck, confirms the wine's place as yet another benchmark expression of the valley's most famous AVA. What an easy-drinking 2021 Cabernet from this legendary Napa producer. It's a beautifully classic wine with intensely aromatic, flavour-packed fruit redolent of blueberry, black cherry, and black raspberry, tinged with smoky cedarwood. The full-bodied palate is marked by persistent tannins and a satisfying finish revealing notes of earth, river stones, dried herbs, and a firm spine of acidity—a wine to enjoy throughout a great meal. Nearly half the fruit is sourced from Oakville, with additional grapes from Stags Leap District, Oak Knoll, Yountville, and Rutherford. A blend of 91% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Petit Verdot, 3% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Malbec, aged 18 months in French oak barrels.

95 points, Jonathan Cristaldi, Decanter (Sep 2024)

The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville is straight-up fabulous, with pure cassis and darker blue-tinged fruit as well as notes of graphite, tobacco leaf, and spicy wood. These carry to a medium to full-bodied, gorgeously layered, elegant Cabernet Sauvignon with fine tannins and just a kiss of background oak. There are roughly 11,000 cases, so it shouldn't be too hard to find in the market, and it's going to drink well for at least 10-15 years.

94 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Dec 2023)

Intense blackberries and black cherries on the nose lead to vivid focused cherries, blueberries and minty, spicy accents on the palate. Firm in tannins and fresh with good acidity, this outstanding wine is well-balanced. Enjoyable now but best from 2027.

94 points, James Suckling (Mar 2024)

An extroverted style, with a burst of mint and boysenberry notes leading off, followed by steeped plum and black currant preserve flavors. There's a nice graphite note running underneath the fruit before this ends with a licorice accent that rounds off the finish. Drink now through 2038. 900 cases made.

“Indulgent, plush and rich on the palate, the 2021 vintage is indeed a standout for Clos Apalta.” - Joaquin Hidalgo, Vinous

Sourced from the same vineyard as its iconic flagship cuvée, the 96-point 2020 Clos Apalta Le Petit Clos boasts fresh dark fruit hinting of graphite and cedar spice with fine-grained abundant tannins on a long-lived finish, a stellar, age worthy second wine from the makers of Chile’s legendary Clos Apalta and bargain priced at a fraction of the grand vin.

First crafted in 2014 as a youthful, approachable expression of the Clos Apalta terroir, the Le Petit Clos is made from a mix of mostly younger vines planted in the granite soils of the estate’s organically and biodynamically farmed El Condor vineyard, its unique microclimate in the shadow of the towering Cordillera Mountains creating optimal conditions for ripening Carménère while maintaining its freshness and acidity. The result is a beautifully balanced, harmonious blend with a rich, velvety texture and layered complexity structured for a decade or more of evolution.

Declared “one heck of a second wine” by Jeb Dunnuck, the elegant 96-point 2021 Clos Apalta Le Petit Clos continues the cuvée’s thrilling evolution as the region’s top-scoring, top-value Bordeaux blend, expertly crafted to express the terroir of Clos Apalta and promising savvy collectors who stock the cellar an equally thrilling evolution at an unbeatable price.

Embracing a Bordeaux-style approach, Le Petit Clos is the second wine of Clos Apalta. The 2021 Le Petit Clos combines 68% Carménère, 16% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot and 1% Cabernet Franc, all sourced from the Apalta Vineyard in Colchagua. Displaying a purple hue in the glass, it exhibits a ripe character mellowed by the fresh nature of the vintage. It offers plum and blackberry aromas along with bay leaf, boldo and menthol hints over an ashy marmalade core. Indulgent, plush and rich on the palate, the soft and overwhelming mouthfeel lingers long with a precise, juicy and slightly refreshing personality. The 2021 vintage is indeed a standout for Clos Apalta.

96 points, Joaquín Hidalgo, Vinous (Jul 2024)

A nice touch of baked cherries and dark chocolate to the deep blackberry fruit. Ink and a touch of graphite and dried herbs. Full-bodied and pretty powerful with fine-grained tannins and a long, extensive finish. 68% carmenere, 16% cabernet sauvignon,15% merlot and 1% cabernet franc. 2020 Chateau Les Carmes Haut-Brion (750ml)
Cabernet Franc from Pessac-Leognan, Bordeaux, France
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

Described over recent vintages as “one of Bordeaux’s stars” by Antonio Galloni of Vinous, these high scoring 98-100 pt. selections from Chateau Les Carmes Haut-Brion are among Pessac-Leognan’s most unique and age worthy blends from three top vintages, reflecting Les Carmes Haut-Brion’s “distinctive, Cabernet Franc-driven DNA” according to the Wine Advocate’s William Kelley and all incredibly priced well below its First Growth neighbors.

Situated just a few rows of houses away from Chateau Haut-Brion, Les Carmes Haut Brion was once part of the First Growth with roots dating back to the 16th century, enjoying a stratospheric rise in quality led by the former winemaker of iconic Rhone producer M. Chapoutier Guillaume Pouthier along with renowned consultant Stephane Derenoncourt under the ownership of Patrice Pichet since 2010. Described as “a magical terroir” by Jeb Dunnuck, the Grand Vin is sourced from the top 7.6 hectares of the estate’s sustainably farmed 30 hectares of vines planted mostly to Cabernet Franc and Merlot with about a fifth Cabernet Sauvignon, the best terroir near the Chateau boasting Cab Franc vines dating back to World War II. Declared “a dead ringer for Haut-Brion” by Jeb Dunnuck, the magnificent 100 pt. 2018 Chateau Les Carmes Haut-Brion is a blend of 37% Cabernet Franc, 34% Cabernet Sauvignon and 29% Merlot matured in 75% new French oak barrels along with 16% foudres and 9% in terracotta amphoras for 24 months, revealing intensely aromatic, concentrated earthy black fruit with crushed stone and seamless, supple tannins, described as a “wine of dazzling intensity and stature” by Antonio Galloni of Vinous and summed up as “a total knockout” built to deliver the goods over the next 30 plus years. A blend of 48% Cabernet Franc, 28% Cabernet Sauvignon and 24% Merlot aged for 24 months in 84% new French oak barrels with 7% in foudres and 9% in terracotta amphoras, the elegant 98 pt. 2019 Chateau Les Carmes Haut-Brion is called “a gorgeous 2019” by Inside Bordeaux’s Jane Anson layering fresh, luscious aromatic fruit with refined, integrated tannins and boasting “a drinkability that makes you want a glass now, but could happily be enjoyed decades from now” according to Decanter’s Georgina Hindle, ranking #18 on Decanter’s Top Wines of 2023. Described as a “heavenly wine” that “you probably couldn't have too much of in the cellar” by Jeb Dunnuck, the full-bodied 2020 Chateau Les Carmes Haut-Brion is a blend of 40% Cabernet Franc, 34% Cabernet Sauvignon and 26% Merlot aged in 80% new French oak barrels along with 11% in foudres and 9% in terracotta amphoras for 24 months, yielding a thrilling and exquisitely balanced blend summed up by Vinous critic Neal Martin as “a serious Les Carmes Haut-Brion with a very long future ahead.”

Summing up the magical, riveting qualities of Chateau Les Carmes Haut-Brion, Jeb Dunnuck offers unequivocal advice: “Believe the hype,” these top vintages of Chateau Les Carmes Haut-Brion promising the epic ageability of its First Growth neighbor and value priced for Bordeaux collectors to stock the cellar at a fraction of the price.

100V 100D 98JD 98WI

The 2020 Les Carmes Haut-Brion is a total stunner. For the first time I can remember, Les Carmes Haut-Brion marries all of its elements so well that nothing stands out. In the past, the high percentage of Franc and/or the whole clusters were evident. The 2020 is the first modern vintage in which all the elements are so well balanced. Dark red/purplish fruit, rose petal, mint, lavender, dried herbs and incense all build in a ravishing Pessac-Léognan that will take your breath away. The 2020 is 40% Cabernet Franc, 34% Cabernet Sauvignon and 26% Merlot, picked between September 14 to 26, which is early here. Whole cluster was 55%. Vinification took place over five weeks, using very gentle extraction, with no pumpovers or punchdowns. Aging was 80% new oak, 11% 18hL foudres and 9% amphorae. In tasting, the 2020 is simply magnificent. There are no soloists, just the most exceptionally vivid, breathtaking orchestra imaginable. The 2020 is a masterpiece from Technical Director Guillaume Pouthier and his team. Don't miss it!

100 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Feb 2023)

The best 2020s seem to be confident without showing off or shouting too loudly and this Carmes does just that. Focused and precise, this is complex and characterful, rich yet vibrant with a texture and taste that makes an impact straight away. Fresh black fruits, floral notes and sensational minerality do the talking - it has weight, density and structure - broad and bold yet svelte, it has direction and persistence, building quickly then settling and elongating with such clarity and purity. This is a wine you want to drink. Cool, classic, sharp and decisive with a flawless texture. Whereas 2019 was more generous, this is more classic and easy to understand. An excellent job - seemingly effortless winemaking in 2020 - and a bottle that is sure to be emptied pretty quickly.

100 points, Georgina Hindle, Decanter (Jan 2023)

From a bottle purchased stateside, the 2020 Château Les Carmes Haut-Brion is a riviting, utterly classic Pessac-Leognan that offers textbook darker currant fruits, scorched earth, tobacco, lead pencil, and smoky, truffly nuances, as well as a subtle floral hint with time in the glass. Based on 40% Cabernet Franc, 34% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the balance Merlot that saw a plenty of stems as well as 80% new oak, it's deep plum/ruby hued, has medium to full-bodied richness, a graceful, layered, elegant mouthfeel, polished, fine grained tannins, and a gorgeous finish. It's more approachable today than I would have imagined from barrel, and it actually reminds me of the 2019 with its understated elegance. It deserves a solid 7-8 years of bottle age and will be a 30, 40, 50+ year wine. It's another heavenly wine from Guillaume Pouthier that you probably couldn't have too much of in the cellar.

98 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Oct 2023)

The 2020 Les Carmes Haut-Brion is a blend of 40% Cabernet Franc, 34% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 26% Merlot with a pH of 3.62 and aged for 24 months in 80% new oak, 11% foudres, and 9% terracotta amphoras. A proportion of whole-bunch fermentation was used, depending on the suitability of the batch: 50-60% whole bunch was generally used on the Merlot and Cabernet Franc, less on the Cabernet Sauvignon. Deep garnet-purple in color, it slowly releases the most gorgeous perfume of violets, dark chocolate, black cherry preserves, and creme de cassis, followed by suggestions of crushed rocks, tar, wild sage, and anise. The medium-bodied palate delivers a solid foundation of firm, grainy tannins and seamless freshness to support the tight-knit black fruit and mineral layers, finishing long and perfumed.

Raspberry, redcurrant bush and bark on the nose. Some lead pencil, too. Full-bodied, but not overpowering, with linear and polished tannins that run the length of the wine. Very solid and structured, yet there is openness at the end. Drink after 2024 and onwards.
