2015 Xavier Vignon Arcane XIX Le Soleil (750ml)
Grenache from Côtes du Rhône, Rhône, France
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More Regular readers of these pages are no stranger to the stunning wines being produced by Xavier Vignon, who has established a flawless reputation working with such luminaries as Marcoux, Grand Veneur, Raymond Usseglio, and others. Through these relationships, he has gained access to incredibly pristine parcels of very old-vine plantings across the valley, where he works with centenarian vines of Grenache and Syrah as well as 75- to 85-year-old plots of multiple other varieties. Soleil is composed of 80% Grenache from 100-year-old vines, 10% Mourvèdre from 80-year-old vines, and 10% Syrah from 50-year-old vines, all which comes together to yield just one bottle per vine. Terroir selection is based on mineral salt concentration and density in vineyards from nine villages. Xavier is looking for freshness through both altitude and exposure, and it certainly seems he found it. "Maybe the best Côte du Rhône Villages I've ever tasted..." - Wine Advocate This beauty is a ridiculous bargain, and it just might be the best Côtes-du-Rhône Villages that you have ever tasted too. I have blind-tasted colleagues on this several times, just to break the monotony of the wines that they peddle, if I'm being honest, and their responses say it all. The aromatics alone sing Châteauneuf, specifically the serious terroir east of town, very La Cras-like. Of course I press them for a price range, and $40 to $50 is typically the consensus. They are basically spot on, as such a gorgeous wine should cost that much, but our domaine-direct relationship with Xavier brings it to us at a jaw-dropping, sub-$20 price for our private clients.

Seeking to produce a more modern Rioja in contrast with its traditionally styled reds, La Rioja Alta purchased Torre de Ona in 1995 to craft a terroir-driven Rioja from estate grown fruit, its stately manor house in Paganos-La Guardia surrounded by vines reminiscent of a Bordeaux chateau. Spread across 50 hectares surrounding the manor, the Tempranillo vines in the south facing Torre de Ona vineyard are planted in shallow clay and limestone-rich soils at over 575 meters above sea level and protected from the humid north winds by the imposing mountains, the milder temperatures allowing for complete ripening of the grapes. Divided into 50 individual parcels by soil type, the hand harvested grapes undergo strict selection to determine if the quality is suitable to produce the Reserva and each parcel is then vinified separately in stainless steel tanks. Blending in a small amount of other varietals, La Rioja Alta winemaker Julio Saez aged the enticing 2015 Torre de Ona Martelo Reserva in a mix of new American oak and used French oak barrels and racked the wine in a traditional method by candlelight to remove sediment, yielding pure, elegant red fruit with soft silky tannins on a long spicy finish. Produced in a manner described by James Suckling as “a mix of Riojan craftsmanship and Burgundy style,” the beautifully balanced 94 pt. 2015 Torre de Ona Reserva expertly combines exceptional Tempranillo reflecting its vineyard origins with extended oak aging, a delicious Rioja narrowing the gap between the classic and modern styles that’s ready for Rioja fans to enjoy often at a terrific price.

2015 Azelia Barolo (750ml)
Nebbiolo from Barolo, Piedmont, Italy
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More Azelia's owner Luigi Scavino is cousin to Enrico Scavino of the more famous Paolo Scavino winery, both sharing ownership of the famous Fiasco hill in Castiglione Falletto (Bricco del Fiasc). Located in Castiglione Falletto, it is no surprise that Azelia's village Barolo is primarily sourced here and is styled to drink upon release; very elegant and refined. Showing more power depth and structure, Azelia's single vineyard wines from Serralunga d'Alba are San Rocco and Margheria. San Rocco is one of Serralunga's top sites and this old vine San Rocco proves it. Also from older vines, the Margheria shows more breadth and openness afforded by clay balanced with limestone energy representing the vintage well.

Working over 50 harvests at his family's estate since the age of seven, Paolo Cianferoni is a hands-on winemaker, overseeing Caparsa's rise in quality from very good to spectacular over the last decades and selling out most of its small, critically acclaimed production locally. Sourced from the Doccio a Matteo vineyard at 450-575 meters above sea level, the estate's top Sangiovese vines average 60 years of age, planted on a northeast aspect away from the brutally hot summer sun in rocky galestro schist with chalky albarese. Hand picking and selecting the best fruit (with the remainder of his harvest sold to negociants including Antinori and Ruffino), Paolo fermented the flagship 2016 Doccio a Matteo Riserva with wild yeasts in Caparsa's artisanal stone cellar before aging it in large 10 hectoliter casks (aka botti) and bottling it unfiltered over two years after harvest, yielding a stunningly rich and wonderfully balanced benchmark of cellar-worthy Sangiovese poised to evolve over decades. Surrounded by the highest slopes of La Morra, Castiglione Falletto and Monforte that shelter it from the cold and wind, Enzo and Francesco cultivate their sloping Cannubi vineyard by hand, employing techniques like green harvesting and thinning to further lower yields. After fermenting the hand harvested grapes with native yeasts in stainless steel, the supple and sleek 2019 Brezza Barolo Cannubi was aged in a mix of large, used Slavonian oak barrels for 24 months before being bottled unfiltered and unfined and cellared for another year prior to release, maintaining its fresh acidity while integrating refined tannins that promise over a decade of longevity. Read More Driving up California’s Highway 1 from Bodega Bay with stunning Pacific Ocean vistas in view, it may be easy to see why Joan and Walt Flowers fell in love with the rugged landscape of Camp Meeting Ridge, but it’s hard to imagine how they ever thought the steep, high altitude terrain would become a prime site for growing Chardonnay. 2016 Domenico Clerico Ciabot Mentin (750ml)
Nebbiolo from Barolo, Piedmont, Italy
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More Touring Piedmont late last year, I tasted through the top producers' finished wines from the much heralded 2016 vintage, basic Barolo through top Crus. Stunning wines greeted me at one address after another, many reminding me of legendary bottlings from 1989 or '90. Clerico's dazzling offers as usual punctuated my trip, a very definite exclamation point and among the finest set of wines of this tremendous vintage. Domenico grew up in these hills, and when he entered the wine business he began assembling small parcels of the most prestigious vineyards in Monforte d'Alba. Ciabot Mentin and Pajana in Ginestre soon followed – then the prized Serralunga – each showing Nebbiolo in a different shade of dark beauty. Most vines were planted in the '50s and '70s, old vines abound here. Because of these very old vines, Clerico tops the charts even in difficult harvests; hand this estate a vintage as perfect as 2016 and you're in for skyscraper-like quality. Again in this vintage Ciabot Mentin tops my chart. And the sexy spice and depth of spine-tingling complexity is on full display in Pajana and the best Aeroplan Servaj yet. A line up that represents the life and work of Domenico Clerico.
