I recently dined at a Greek restaurant and fell in love with this wine. looked everywhere for it and found it here at B‑21. I bought a case and bonus, they offered free shipping (their $12.00 shipping fee isn't bad either for less than a case). The best part was that it was delivered a day earlier than expected. Would definitely buy here again. Thank you B‑21 for great service.

2022 Daou Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon (750ml)
Cabernet Sauvignon from Paso Robles, California
B-21 Top Recommendation

Described by Jeb Dunnuck as competing “with the best of Napa” at a fraction of the price, these top scoring Paso Robles reds from DAOU represent some of the portfolio’s top values, from the rich and satisfying 92 pt. 2022 Pessimist Red Blend to the bright and silky 91 pt. 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon and stellar, age worthy 95 pt. 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve, all impeccably crafted to over deliver value at a bargain price.

Perched at the highest point overlooking Paso Robles at the same altitude of Napa’s Howell Mountain, the spectacular DAOU Vineyards was founded by Georges and Daniel Daou over a decade ago, the brothers becoming known for pioneering Paso Robles as a top region for growing Bordeaux varietals and steadily building a reputation for “a massive lineup of stellar wines” according to Jeb Dunnuck.

Composed of 59% Petite Sirah, 20% Zinfandel, 14% Syrah and 7% Lagrein aged for 10 months in 60% new French oak, the plush 92 pt. 2022 Pessimist is “an easy drinking blend” according to the Wine Advocate’s Erin Brooks, offering fresh aromatic ripe dark fruit hinting of peppery spice with a soft texture and impressive, lengthy finish. A blend of 77.5% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15.6% Petit Verdot, 6.5% Merlot and 0.4% Cabernet Franc aged for 8 months in 50% new French oak, the richly aromatic 91 pt. 2022 Daou Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon is “a formidable Cab” according to critic Matt Kettmann already drinking beautifully and earning a spot on the Wine Enthusiast Top 100 of 2023, a harmonious blend of silky dark fruit balanced by bright acidity described as “impossible to ignore” by the Wine Advocate’s Erin Brooks. Produced in a hot and dry Paso vintage yielding smaller clusters and greater concentration, the refined 95 pt. 2022 Daou Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve is mostly Cabernet Sauvignon blended with 23% Petit Verdot and aged for 18 months in 50% new French oak, yielding intensely aromatic ripe dark fruit hinting of graphite, cedar and earthy spice with smooth, balanced tannins on a long, velvety finish “with an underlying elegance that suggests it will age for years to come” according to James Suckling.

A range of “gorgeous wines that continue to show what's possible with Bordeaux varieties from Paso Robles” according to the Wine Advocate’s William Kelley, these top scoring 2022 Daou reds are “profoundly colorful and powerful wines with an intense core of tannins and masses of rich fruit that nearly mask their hulking structures” according to Eric Guido of Vinous, reflecting the Daou legacy for delivering exceptional quality and tremendous value at a price that doesn’t break the bank.

91V 91WE #68 Top 100

The 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon is impossible to ignore. Violet pastille and sweet spice complement a burst of crushed blackberries and cherries. Silken and seamless, it swirls across the palate with an energetic mix of ripe wild berries and citrus, all motivated by a core of vibrant acidity. While gently tannic, the 2022 remains fresh and lively throughout, leaving a tart blackberry tinge that carries on.

91 points, Eric Guido, Vinous (Jul 2024)

It's amazing that the Daou brothers can produce a formidable Cab that is this accessible at such a young age. The palate combines rich blackberry sauce with espresso bean and cocoa, as lingering, sappy tannins extend through the finish.

2015 Xavier Vignon Arcane XIX Le Soleil (750ml)
Grenache from Côtes du Rhône, Rhône, France
B-21 Top Recommendation

Regular readers of these pages are no stranger to the stunning wines being produced by Xavier Vignon, who has established a flawless reputation working with such luminaries as Marcoux, Grand Veneur, Raymond Usseglio, and others. Through these relationships, he has gained access to incredibly pristine parcels of very old-vine plantings across the valley, where he works with centenarian vines of Grenache and Syrah as well as 75- to 85-year-old plots of multiple other varieties.

As always, we've sourced this latest set directly from Vignon's cellars, so fans of the estate can stock up on any or all of these critically acclaimed favorites for under $25 each. Led by a pair of "sensational" 2015s that each notched 94 points fromWine Advocate, these carry on Vignon's track record as one of the great iconoclastic talents in the Rhone today. The NV Arcane bottlings are no less impressive or singular.

94WA 94RAS 93JD

The 2015 Cotes du Rhone Villages Arcane XVIII Le Soleil is youthfully dark in color and fruit-forward, but it also shows softening, silky tannins. It's full bodied but not overblown, with a sensationally seductive mouthfeel. Black cherries define the fruit, joined by hints of dark chocolate and enough garrigue to give it a seriously savory character despite the fruit. This is an old-vine blend of 80% Grenache with 10% each Syrah and Mourvèdre, aged 15 months in one-third new oak, the rest in concrete or foudre. Maybe the best Côte du Rhône Villages I've ever tasted, it looks to have the stuffing to go another 10 years.

94 points, Joe Czerwinski, Wine Advocate (Issue # 233 - Oct 2017)

Coming from 100-year-old Grenache vines (there’s 10% each of Syrah and Mourvèdre in the blend) mostly in the northern part of the Southern Rhône, the 2015 Côtes du Rhône Villages Arcane le Soleil saw 15 months in one-third each of new barrels, concrete tanks, and stainless-steel tanks. This inky colored beauty offers a terrific perfume of blueberries, scorched earth, graphite, and crushed violets. Deep, full-bodied, incredibly pure, and elegant, with silky tannin, it’s a sensational Côtes du Rhône that’s better than most Chateauneuf du Pape in the vintage. It will be better in another year or two and keep for 8-10 years.

There are two slightly eccentric wines from this estate that merit serious attention. Almost 100% Mourvèdre from a parcel close to Vinsobres, the sensational 2015 Vin de France Arcane XV Le Diable had a three-week maceration (Xavier prefers to get as much extraction as possible before alcoholic fermentation), and was aged mostly in small oak tanks and concrete. Blueberries, blackberries, peppery herbs and spice all flow from this layered, full-bodied beauty that has awesome purity, integrated acidity and plenty of structure. Give bottles 2-3 years and drink over the following 10-15 years.

2022 Benton Lane Estate Pinot Noir (750ml)
Pinot Noir from Willamette, Oregon
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

Sourced from “a five star vintage” producing classically styled Oregon Pinot according to Decanter’s Clive Pursehouse, the fresh and vibrant 93 pt. 2022 Benton Lane Estate Pinot Noir offers engaging aromatic spiced fruit with ripe smooth tannins balanced by bright acidity, a palate pleasing Oregon Pinot from the Willamette estate backed by Quintessa founder Agustin Huneeus bargain priced for fans of Oregon Pinot to stock up by the case.

After selling their Pritchard Hill vineyards in Napa in the late 1980’s, Benton Lane founders Steve and Carol Girard purchased a former sheep ranch straddling Benton and Lane Counties in the Southern Willamette Valley to produce Burgundy-style cool climate Pinot Noir, releasing wines under their distinctive postage stamp Benton Lane label for nearly three decades and continuing to manage the vineyards under the ownership of legendary vintner Agustin Huneeus. Situated on a biodiverse estate spanning 317 acres northwest of Eugene, Benton Lane’s 142 acres of dry farmed vineyards are planted almost exclusively to Pinot Noir in a mix of sedimentary and volcanic soils, enjoying the protection of significant peaks within the Coast Range with moderate temperatures that extend the growing season for optimal ripening. Crafted by winemaker Amael Orrego of the Huneeus winemaking team, the beautifully balanced 2022 Benton Lane Estate Pinot Noir was sourced from 82 parcels across the estate each vinified separately and the final blend matured in 19% new French oak for 10 months, yielding a fresh, lively Oregon Pinot Noir “with cooling acidity and ripe red and blue fruits” according to Eric Guido of Vinous and finishing “long and structured,” with nuanced complexity that will evolve over the next five or more years.

From an outstanding Willamette vintage producing “tremendous freshness” and “ample concentration” according to Decanter’s Clive Pursehouse, the impressive 93 pt. 2022 Benton Lane Pinot Noir is a top scoring, crowd pleasing Oregon Pinot Noir offering the enticing combination of rich, ripe flavors and a smooth, satisfying finish that calls for a second pour and unbeatably priced to reach for without hesitation.

93D

A challenging wine to make, says winemaker Amael Orrego, who crafts the blend of this wine across 82 Pinot Noir blocks. The wine captures the freshness of the Willamette Valley and its bright red berry aromatics that combine with savoury herbal notes of mint and pennyroyal. The palate offers red fruited complexity. Ripe wild strawberries, cranberries and mint rise up from elements of earth and forest floor for an impressive wine, capturing the fresh, lively character of Willamette Valley Pinot Noir with broad distribution.

2011 Lopez de Heredia Vina Tondonia Reserva (750ml)
Tempranillo from Rioja, Spain
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

A Rioja lover’s dream assortment, these traditionally styled selections from Lopez de Heredia come from one of the region’s most esteemed Bodegas with over a century of expertise as grower-producers, their legendary, long-lived Riojas released only after lengthy aging in their famously moldy and cobweb-laced cellars, perfect for mixing a case or two at a price that “seems like a steal” according to Wine and Spirits.

As the last remaining family-run Bodegas in Rioja, winemaking at Lopez de Heredia has remained remarkably unchanged since its inception in 1877, crafting its wines in the Vina Tondonia winery in Haro with only estate-grown fruit, fermenting with natural yeasts and aging for extended periods in wood before bottling without filtration and further aging in the bottle.

Summing up the long-lived aging potential of each of these Lopez de Heredia selections, critic Neal Martin declares “a bottle of Lopez de Heredia is an individual and each time you meet, you may see a different side to its personality,” reflecting the pure authenticity, remarkable ageability and striking complexity of these top vintages and promising pleasurable drinking ahead for Rioja fans and Spanish wine collectors who act quickly to secure their picks from this value packed offer.

95JS 94WA 93WS #53 Top 100

A traditional beauty that effuses iron, warm earth and savory tobacco leaves, together with plums, spices and orange zest. This is juicy and still tight, with firm but savory tannins. Medium-weight and quite zesty in texture, as is the case with the other López de Heredia reds tasted this session. Drink now or hold.

95 points, James Suckling (Sep 2022)

The 2011 Viña Tondonia Reserva is darker and shows riper fruit, a rounder palate and some dusty tannins. A year of ripeness, concentration and tannin, the wine is powerful with the finesse of Tondonia. Tasting this next to the textbook 2010 Tondonia revealed how this has more muscle and a wider back and the 2010 epitomizes the finesse and elegance. 270,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in May 2019.

94 points, Luis Gutiérrez, Wine Advocate (Jul 2022)

Richly savory on the nose, this fresh, sinewy red features a minerally underpinning of petrol, earth, iron and salt to the flavors of juicy dried cherry and cranberry, red licorice and mandarin orange peel. Opens nicely in the glass and on the palate, with the persistent finish showing aromatic herbs and spices, plus more mineral notes. Tempranillo, Garnacho, Graciano and Mazuelo. Drink now through 2031. 19,166 cases made, 4,500 cases imported.

Coming from the higher elevation sites, the NV Beaumes de Venise Arcane Etoile is another elegant, finesse-oriented wine from Xavier that has both richness and freshness. A blend of Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre as well as a small amount of Viognier from 2015, 2016, and 2017, it has something profound in its texture and balance. 2022 Chappellet Mountain Cuvee (750ml)
Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa, California
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

From a winery that Wine Spectator’s James Laube notes “always seems to over deliver on quality for the price,” this dynamic duo from Napa icon Chappellet does not disappoint. The lush 2022 Chappellet Mountain Cuvee is once again expertly crafted for near-term enjoyment, while the outstanding,96-poiint 2021 Chappellet Cabernet Sauvignon Signature lives up to Jeb Dunnuck’s description as a “serious wine in the making” from an exceptional vintage. Both are unbeatably priced for stocking up.

While most vineyards at the time were planted on the valley floor, Pritchard Hill pioneers Donn and Molly Chappellet purchased 320 acres high in the rugged hills east of Oakville on the advice of legendary winemaker Andre Tchelistcheff in the late 1960s, producing one of the first Cabs from mountain-grown fruit in Napa Valley in 1969 and continuing over a half century later as one of the few family-owned wineries in the region. Crafted of mostly Cabernet Sauvignon with 28% Merlot, 10% Petit Verdot, 6% Malbec and 2% Cabernet Franc, the plush 2022 Chappellet Mountain Cuvee offers fragrant ripe dark fruit with soft, integrated tannins and a hint of spiced vanilla from aging in new French oak, a rich and easy drinking blend with seamless structure and “a bargain by most Napa standards” according to Wine Spectator. A blend of 79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Petit Verdot, 7% Malbec and 6% Merlot from veteran winemaker Phillip Corallo-Titus, the powerful,96-point 2021 Chappellet Cabernet Sauvignon Signature features concentrated, dark fruit hinting of graphite and cedar with a long-lived finish, a richly textured, cellar-worthy Napa Cab “supported by plush tannins and just enough freshness” according to The Wine Independent’s Lisa Perrotti-Brown, who recommends “buying whatever you’re offered’ from the outstanding 2021 Napa vintage.

Called “a big overachiever” by Antonio Galloni of Vinous and “a smoking good value” by Jeb Dunnuck, the 2021 Signature promises to evolve gracefully in the cellar for well over a decade, while the luscious 2022 Chappellet Mountain Cuvee is ready to enjoy over the next few years, a bargain priced duo offering the best of both worlds for lovers of Napa Cabs seeking outstanding value.

Considered one of the best vintages ever by Paso Robles growers according to James Suckling, the 2021 growing season was defined by even temperatures with the absence of major heat spikes in an extended growing season, enjoying a combination of long, sunny days and high temperatures that enhanced flavor development and encouraged optimal ripening. While “continued drought led to lower yields from smaller clusters and berries but also concentrated flavors” according to Wine Advocate’s Erin Larkin, the cooling effect of Pacific Ocean breezes flowing through the Templeton Gap resulted in lower nighttime temperatures, allowing the Cabernet Sauvignon grapes to retain their natural acidity. Harvesting at night to preserve freshness, winemaker Noel Basso aged the plush 2021 Provenance Deadeye Cabernet Sauvignon in a combination of 20% toast and neutral American oak barrels, yielding fresh, aromatic dark fruit with exceptional richness resulting from the small, drought affected berries, balanced by mineral-laced acidity and finishing with pleasing notes of citrusy spice.

Among the top-rated Paso value Cabs from an outstanding vintage, the smooth and ready-to-drink 2021 Deadeye delivers one of the region’s top bargain propostions, a delicious and thoroughly satisfying Cab certain to thrill Paso Robles fans and any California Cab lover seeking an outstanding value to enjoy often.

Arriving in the Rhone Valley in the mid-1990’s and consulting for such luminaries as Marcoux, Raymond Usseglio and La Nerthe, the combination of Xavier Vignon’s insider access to some of the oldest vines across the valley and creative passion for the region’s varied terroirs and grapes inspired him to create the series of Arcane wines, naming each unique release after a card in the Tarot deck with matching illustrations on the labels. Xavier's meticulous winemaking requires some detailed descriptions for full appreciation, so let's dive in.

  • Sourced from 100% Mourvedre from vines up to 100 years of age planted in 17 diverse zones including some in Chateauneuf du Pape, the richly concentrated 94 pt. 2015 Arcane XV Le Diable underwent Xavier’s signature extended maceration before aging in 70% in concrete and 30% in new Austrian oak barrels for 15 months, yielding vibrant fruit with lush tannins and perfectly balanced acidity, its name Le Diable translating as the Devil and referring to being seduced by worldly goods.
  • A multi-vintage, organically grown blend of 90% Grenache and 10% Syrah from the AOC's varied north and south terroirs, Xavier aged the full-bodied 92 pt. N/V Xavier Vignon Cairanne Arcane La Temperance Organic in a mix of stainless steel and his patented Vinarius system of submerging small barrels in a wine-filled 7,000 liter wooden vat to prevent any oxygen from contact with the wine, yielding a “rich and fleshy” blend according to James Suckling with a “dark, earthy finish that pulls you back to the glass for more,” La Temperance representing balance, moderation, and harmony.
  • Declared “a beautiful, full-bodied, elegant wine that might just be one of the greatest red wines to come from Beaumes de Venise” by Jeb Dunnuck, the 95 pt. N/V Xavier Vignon Arcane XVII L'Etoile is a co-fermented blend of 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah and 10% Mourvedre harvested from 2015 through 2017, aged in a mix of barrels and concrete tanks for 15 months yielding elegant layers of fresh fruit with nuances of pepper and spice, L’Etoile translating as “the Star” and representing inspiration and a bright future.
  • A multi-vintage blend from five of the Southern Rhone’s greatest recent vintages beginning in 2010, the bold and powerful 96 pt. NV Xavier Vignon Vin de France Arcane Le Fou was sourced from 85% old vine Grenache from different clones grown mostly throughout Chateauneuf du Pape blended with small amounts of Mourvedre, Syrah and Caladoc (a cross of Grenache and Malbec) and aged in a mix of French and Austrian oak barrels, truncated wooden vats and concrete vats, revealing “a full-bodied, layered, powerful yet seamless style” according to Jeb Dunnuck with “silky tannins, and a big finish” built to evolve over the next decades, , Le Fou or “the Fool” representing a leap of faith and an invitation to adventure.
  • Described as “maybe the best Cotes du Rhone Villages I ever tasted” by the Wine Advocate’s Joe Czerwinski with “the stuffing to go another 10 years,” the impressive 96 pt. 2015 Xavier Vignon Arcane XIX Le Soleil is a blend of 80% Grenache from 100 year old vines with 10% Mourvedre over 80 years old and 10% Syrah over 50 years old and aged 15 months in one-third each of new barrels, concrete tanks, and stainless-steel tanks, called “an inky colored beauty” by Jeb Dunnuck “that’s better than most Chateauneuf du Pape in the vintage,” named the Sun to represent good fortune, happiness and joy.
  • Sourced from parcels in Lirac, Vacqueyras, Gigondas, Rasteau, and higher elevation sites in Beaumes de Venise, the 2016 Xavier Vignon Arcane VI Les Amoureux delivers “sheer deliciousness” according to the Wine Advocate’s Joe Czerwinski, describing it as “a stunning effort, showcasing raspberry and strawberry fruit, a silky-creamy texture and lush, mouthwatering flavors,” the blend of 80% Grenache, 10% Mourvedre and 5% each Cinsault and Caledoc aged in concrete vats and classified as a Cotes du Rhone while built for extended aging, the Lovers card representing harmony and perfection.
  • Last but certainly not least, the lush 94 pt. 2016 Xavier Vignon Arcane L'Hermite is a blend of 80% Grenache from 100 year vines, 7% Mourvedre and 5% Syrah co-fermented in concrete and aged in truncated wooden vats, with 4% each Muscardin and Picpoul Noir aged in small untoasted barrels, the blend aged partly in Xavier’s Vinarium system and cellared for an additional four years in bottle, yielding a harmonious and balanced Gigondas described by Jeb Dunnuck as “elegant, seamless and silky” that promises to reveal its layered complexity over the next decade, L’Ermite or “the Hermit” representing seeking knowledge from within.

The classically styled 97-point 2020 Domaine Durieu Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Lucile Avril is a collectible-caliber stunner from 100-year-old Grenache vines delivering “beautiful Provençal character” according to Jeb Dunnuck. Tailor-made for stacking high and deep in the cellar, it's available at unheard-of pricing for our B-21 private offer clients.

"Super-concentrated, super-structured, but also more elegant than a wine built on this monumental scale can theoretically be."- James Suckling

Described by Robert Parker himself as “one of the up-and-coming superstar estates of Châteauneuf-du-Pape” over a decade ago, Domaine Durieu is now a bona fide force in the appellation under the direction of third-generation winemaker Vincent Durieu. The 2020 Lucile Avril is a blend of mostly Grenache, the oldest vines dating from 1914, with 10% Mourvedre and 10% Syrah, planted in the Farguerol lieu-dit’s blue clay and limestone soils on a plateau just north of the town of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Vinifying the grapes separately with indigenous yeasts, Durieu aged the 2020 Lucile Avril in concrete tanks for 18 months, balancing its lush, herb- and spice-scented fruit on a framework of firm, well-integrated tannins that guarantee years of evolution.

From a 2020 vintage yielding wines with “energy and verve” according to Decanter’s Matt Walls, the 2020 is "pure, seamless, incredibly elegant, and full-bodied ... another straight-up gorgeous wine from this team that readers will love to have in their cellar," as described by Dunnuck. Rarely do we get an opportunity on such an impeccably balanced, old-vine Châteauneuf-du-Pape at such an unbeatable price. Simply put, this wine is stunning.

97JS 96JD

Smelling this great Chateauneuf is like gazing into a deep chasm. Amazing complexity with aromas ranging from black raspberries through to candied orange, but also notes of raw meat and licorice. Super-concentrated, super-structured, but also more elegant than a wine built on this monumental scale can theoretically be. Extremely long, complete finish. A cuvee of 80% grenache, 10% syrah and 10% mourvedre. Drinkable now, but best from 2025.

97 points, Stuart Pigott, James Suckling (May 2023)

Lastly, and surpassing what the estate achieved in 2019, the 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape Lucile Avril is based on 80% Grenache and 10% each of Syrah and Mourvedre that was brought up all in concrete tanks. It's the deepest ruby-colored wine in the lineup and boasts a brilliant perfume of pure blackberries, ground pepper, licorice, dried garrigue, leather, and Asian spice. Pure, seamless, incredibly elegant, and full-bodied, it's another straight-up gorgeous wine from this team that readers will love to have in their cellar.

Driving up California’s Highway 1 from Bodega Bay with stunning Pacific Ocean vistas in view, it may be easy to see why Joan and Walt Flowers fell in love with the rugged landscape of Camp Meeting Ridge, but it’s hard to imagine how they ever thought the steep, high altitude terrain would become a prime site for growing Chardonnay. Despite the advice of UC Davis that the area was inhospitable for growing grapes, the Flowers’ hands-on experience as nursery owners led them to establish Flowers Vineyard and Winery on the property in 1998, producing Burgundy style Chardonnay boasting “elegance and intensity with great balance” according to the Wine Enthusiast’s Melanie Wynne and attracting an influx of elite winemakers including Martinelli, Pahlmeyer, Peter Michael and Williams. Credited with “helping to set a new standard of quality“ in the region according to the Wine Spectator’s Kim Marcus, the Flowers’ partnership with Quintessa owner Agustin Huneeus since 2009 has taken Flowers “to a whole new level” according to the Wine Independent’s Lisa Perrotti-Brown, the strategic investments including hiring top Burgundy winemaker and consultant Jeremy Seysses of Domaine Dujac to work alongside winemaker Chantal Forthum since 2016. Sourced from the estate’s organically farmed Sea View Ridge as well as several coastal partner vineyards and fermented with native yeasts, winemaker Forthum aged the enticing 2023 Flowers Chardonnay in 18% new French oak for 10 months, yielding a beautifully balanced Chard boasting savory fresh fruit with vibrant acidity and chalky minerality that promises pleasurable drinking over the next 5 or more years.

2019 Altesino Brunello di Montalcino (750ml)
Sangiovese from Montalcino, Tuscany, Italy
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

“The 2019s from Altesino are some of the best new releases I can remember tasting at this address. The Brunello, a blend of vineyards throughout the region, is stunning.”

Eric Guido, Vinous

A favorite of B-21 Brunello collectors and acclaimed by critics across the board, the rich and full-bodied 95 pt. 2019 Altesino Brunello di Montalcino lives up to the estate’s exceptional reputation for over delivering value, a “polished and perfumed” Brunello according to critic Kerin O’Keefe revealing bright, expressive Sangiovese Grosso fruit with radiant acidity on a velvety smooth and long-lived finish, unbeatably value priced for stocking the cellar.

Set in the northern hills of Montalcino near Siena in central Tuscany, Altesino is located on a magnificent, sprawling 80-hectare estate that includes the elegant 15th century Palazzo Altesi and 50 hectares of rolling vineyards, the historic winery known for pioneering the use of small French barriques and bottling single Cru vineyard wines in the region. Reportedly winning in a bid against France’s Chateau Margaux, the estate was purchased in 2002 by the enigmatic Elisabetta Gnudi Angelini, owner of nearby Tenuta Caparzo, an acquisition “that would cement her reputation as one of the most powerful women in Italian wine” according to the Wine Advocate’s Monica Larner. Sourced from six parcels of varied soil types, exposures, elevations and microclimates throughout the appellation, the enticing 2019 Altesino Brunello di Montalcino matured in a mix of used large Slavonian oak barrels for up to 42 months with 6 months longer in bottle, yielding a gracious and silky Brunello with beguiling aromatics that’s “already accessible” according to Decanter’s Michaela Morris and boasting “sufficient depth, concentration and backbone for a solid decade of enjoyment.”

Sourced from “the vintage we’ve all been waiting for” according to Eric Guido of Vinous blending “power and elegance in a way seldom seen,” the sumptuous 95 pt. 2019 Altesino Brunello di Montalcino offers an intriguing combination of classic Sangiovese aromatics and flavors with the freshness and beautifully balanced acidity of the vintage, counted “among the denomination’s best values” according to Decanter’s Michaela Morris and an easy call for savvy collectors seeking to enjoy a gorgeous Brunello more often.

95WA 95JD 94V 93WS 93JS 93D

The Altesino 2019 Brunello di Montalcino boasts a rich and savory side that this wine wears very well. There is a beautiful level of dark fruit that folds into the wine's velvety texture. Blackberry and plum envelop the palate, adding elegant full-bodied volume and fine tannins along the way. The wine is aged in traditional Slavonian casks, and production reaches 110,000 bottles annually (which is very ambitious considering this level of quality).

95 points, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate (Dec 2023)

Pouring a rich ruby color, the 2019 Brunello Di Montalcino offers an attractive nose of cherry candies, sweet herbs, polished leather, and orange oils. It moves seamlessly to the palate with equally harmonious structure and a great, long finish. Medium to full-bodied, it lasts for ages. This is one of those wines that’s going to have a very wide drinking window and is exceptional already. Drink 2026-2046.

95 points, Audrey Frick, Jeb Dunnuck (Feb 2024)

A dark ruby color in the glass, the 2019 Brunello di Montalcino opens with a beguiling blend of dusty earth, crushed rocks, savory herbs and dried roses. This is racy and sleek, with vividly ripe wild berry fruits elevated by orange and sage, all guided by vibrant acidity. Grippy tannins take control through the finish, yet the mouth is left watering for more as a bitter licorice tinge and dark chocolate adds a crunchy sensation.

94 points, Eric Guido, Vinous (Dec 2023)

Though solidly structured, this red displays macerated flavors of cherry, plum, earth and wild herbs, backed by vibrant acidity. A hint of chocolate graces the finish alongside dense tannins. Best from 2026 through 2039. Tasted twice, with consistent notes. 9,200 cases made, 3,100 cases imported.

93 points, Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator (Jun 2024)

A medium-bodied red with pretty plum and berry aromas and flavors. Fine tannins and a fresh finish. Very fine and focused. Not the most structured but this is all about finesse and polish. Drinkable but better in two or three years.

93 points, James Suckling (Sep 2023)

Altesino counts approximately 50 hectares throughout Montalcino’s northern and southern stretches. A compilation of diverse sites, the estate Brunello is among the denomination’s best values. If the Montosoli bottling is more solemn in tone, this 2019 is joyful and bright. Heady red currant and cherry mingle with plum and anise. The sumptuously fruited, plush palate is mouth filling yet agile. Sandy textured tannins envelop and caress while citrusy acidity lifts the whole. Already accessible, it has sufficient depth, concentration and backbone for a solid decade of enjoyment.

2019 Chateau Carlmagnus 50th Anniversary (750ml)
Merlot from Fronsac, Bordeaux, France
B-21 Top Recommendation

With its stunning high slopes and deep valleys along the river’s edge earning it the title of ‘the Tuscany of the Gironde,’ savvy Bordeaux fans know Fronsac is undergoing a renaissance, an up-and-coming region neighboring St. Emilion where careful choices can yield exceptional value. “A tasty Fronsac” with “lovely depth and structure” according to Vinous critic Antonio Galloni, the sleek and elegantly styled 92 pt. 2019 Chateau Carlmagnus Fronsac Terra Luna boasts fresh spiced dark fruit with earthy harmonious tannins and well-defined structure, scoring 90 plus point ratings from a range of critics and offered at bargain pricing.

Combining his passion for winemaking and art, third generation Arnaud Roux-Oulie took over his family’s estate at the age of 20, his unique colorful paintings exhibited throughout the magnificent Chateau and featured on labels designed to commemorate special occasions.  Located west of Saint-Émilion and Pomerol north of the Dordogne River, Fronsac exhibits a “more consistent limestone terroir than neighboring St-Emilion” according to Bordeaux expert Jane Anson, with a mix of clay soils that favor Merlot. Spanning 20 hectares, the vines for the Carlmagnus average 35 years of age, planted in a region known as “the historical cradle of great Bordeaux” with wine-growing dating back to the ancient Romans. A blend of mostly Merlot with 10% Cabernet Franc contributing fresh spicy aromas and tannic structure, the opulent 2019 Carlmagnus Fronsac was aged in 50% new French oak for 18 months under the direction of renowned enologist Herbert Du Bouard of Chateau Angelus, yielding racy, energetic fruit layered with integrated oak and boasting a silky, elegant finish from a “particularly successful” Fronsac vintage according to Jane Anson.

Featuring a fanciful label honoring the 50th anniversary of the Apollo moon landing that mirrors the estate’s skyward trajectory in quality, the powerful 92 pt. 2019 Carlmagnus is a “seamless Fronsac with lots to like” according to Jeb Dunnuck, “drinking nicely today… with upwards of a decade of prime drinking,” poised to overdeliver way above its price point for years to come.

The 2019 Carlmagnus has a perfumed nose of ample black fruit, spicebox and light cedar aromas; the oak here is nicely integrated. 2019 Brezza Barolo Cannubi (750ml)
Nebbiolo from Barolo, Piedmont, Italy
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

Ranking among “the finest Barolos being made” by the Wine Enthusiast’s Kerin O’Keefe, the elegant 96 pt. 2019 Brezza Barolo Cannubi boasts brightly perfumed aromas and silky, red spiced fruit with layered complexity that has made Cannubi one of Barolo’s most famed and collectible Crus, bargain priced at a fraction of its better-known competitors and available in a variety of age worthy formats for stocking the cellar.

Located just a few steps from the center of the town of Barolo, the historic Brezza winery is run by fourth generation Enzo and his nephew Francesco, continuing the family tradition of bottling wines from estate grown Nebbiolo fruit since 1910. Considered icons of traditional winemaking while employing sustainable practices including organic viticulture for over a decade, Brezza’s vineyards span a total of 16.5 hectares surrounded by hazelnut groves, its 1.4-hectare parcel in Cannubi originally planted between 1993 and 2003. Situated where two of Barolo’s most important geological formations meet (Cannubi coming from the Latin “connubio” or marriage), Brezza’s Cannubi parcel is located on the prime central part of the hill, its Nebbiolo vines planted in a mix of silty sand, clay and limestone at 250 meters above sea level on a southeasterly orientation favorable for even ripening. Surrounded by the highest slopes of La Morra, Castiglione Falletto and Monforte that shelter it from the cold and wind, Enzo and Francesco cultivate their sloping Cannubi vineyard by hand, employing techniques like green harvesting and thinning to further lower yields. After fermenting the hand harvested grapes with native yeasts in stainless steel, the supple and sleek 2019 Brezza Barolo Cannubi was aged in a mix of large, used Slavonian oak barrels for 24 months before being bottled unfiltered and unfined and cellared for another year prior to release, maintaining its fresh acidity while integrating refined tannins that promise over a decade of longevity.

From a “stellar vintage” that will “thrill readers who appreciate the nuance, subtlety and structure of Nebbiolo” according to Vinous critic Galloni, the powerful 96 pt. 2019 Brezza Cannubi is an elegantly crafted, finessed Barolo from a top Cru that’s well-priced for savvy collectors to enjoy often without breaking the bank, at an unbeatable value.

96WE 95V

Coming from the heart of the original part of Cannubi, this wine lifts from the glass with such elegance that it automatically sets you on your heels. Aromas of fresh cherries, pink roses, sweet spices, new leather and incense all combine in the glass. The purity of the palate is remarkable with flavors of crushed red fruits, dried violets, wild herbs and dried earth. Superfine tannins hide their seriousness as this wine will go the distance. Drink now–2050.

96 points, Jeff Porter, Wine Enthusiast (Apr 2024)

The 2019 Barolo Cannubi is one of the best wines I have tasted from Brezza in a very long time. Sweet, perfumed and silky, the 2019 bristles with Cannubi character. Crushed red berry fruit, cedar, mint, rose petal and orange zest are some of the notes that grace this exquisite but potent Barolo. Give the tannins a few years to soften.

2019 Caparzo Brunello di Montalcino (750ml)
Sangiovese from Montalcino, Tuscany, Italy
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

A duo of age worthy Brunello di Montalcino wines from one of the region’s top rated producers, B-21 Brunello fans seeking outstanding value know to make room in the cellar for the enticing 95 pt. 2019 Caparzo Brunello di Montalcino and refined single-vineyard 97 pt. 2019 Caparzo Brunello di Montalcino La Casa, sourced from a stellar vintage blending “power and elegance” according to Vinous critic Eric Guido and both unbeatably priced at a fraction of the region’s higher profile estates.

Counted among Montalcino’s most historic wineries and known for producing one of its first single vineyard Brunellos, owner Elisabetta Gnudi Angelini is credited with transforming the spectacular 200-hectare Caparzo estate in northern Montalcino over the last several decades, employing meticulous attention to detail including the construction of a new, technologically advanced cellar and replanting the vineyards while expanding the total area under vine from 46 hectares to 90. Representing “a beautiful introduction to the brand and a great value” according to Eric Guido of Vinous, the seductive 2019 95 pt. Caparzo Brunello di Montalcino was sourced from 9 hectares of vineyards spread over five diverse sectors in the DOCG and aged in a mix of French and Slavonian oak barrels and casks for up to 3 years with extended time in bottle, yielding “outstanding freshness, incredible balance of richness, and a great deal of complexity” according to Audrey Frick of Jeb Dunnuck and promising “another decade of pleasure” according to Brunello expert Kerin O’Keefe. Sourced from the Montosoli Hill, “a true Cru of the region” according to Vinous critic Eric Guido, the plush 97 pt. 2019 Caparzo Brunello di Montalcino La Casa comes from the estate’s 5-hectare La Casa vineyard and was aged for the first 12 months in French oak barriques, the next 24 months in 30-hectoliter French oak barrels and over a year in bottle, yielding “a lovely and joyous wine with velvety soft tannins and good inner energy” according to the Wine Advocate’s Monica Larner described as “focused and elegantly structured” by critic Kerin O’Keefe who sums it up as “excellent.”

Crafted as pure and transparent expressions of their exceptional Montalcino terroir, the impressive 95 pt. 2019 Caparzo Brunello di Montalcino is “already surprisingly accessible but will also offer another decade of pleasure” according to critic Kerin O’Keefe while the elegant 97 pt. 2019 Caparzo Brunello di Montalcino La Casa will continue to evolve over the next few decades according to the Wine Spectator’s Bruce Sanderson, giving savvy Tuscan wine lovers who stock the cellar an opportunity to enjoy two exceptional Brunellos at a bargain price.

Pretty pure fruit to this with black cherry, black berry and light chocolate aromas. The palate is full and focused with very polished tannins and a long, long finish. Best after 2027.

95 points, James Suckling (Sep 2023)

The Caparzo 2019 Brunello di Montalcino offers lively aromas of cherry cola, forest berry and dried cranberry that really pop on the bouquet. The dimension and latitude of the wine is impressive, especially in terms of mouthfeel, and with this bottle you're set for near and medium-term drinking. However, what works best in my opinion is the wine's balanced and much-needed freshness. You get great quality over an ambitious release of 160,000 bottles.

94 points, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate (Dec 2023)

A rich ruby color, the 2019 Brunello Di Montalcino offers a lovely bouquet of medicinal herbs, dried redcurrants, roses, and orange zest. Approachable from the start, the palate is medium-bodied, with lovely freshness and purity, angular tannins, and a clean finish. It is a very well-done wine from Caparzo that will be best enjoyed over the next 6-8 years. I really like these wines for their value, and they’re great restaurant offerings.

93 points, Audrey Frick, Jeb Dunnuck (Feb 2024)

The 2019 Brunello di Montalcino opens slowly in the glass, yet it is worth the wait as a dusty blend of dried flowers, cedar shavings, wild strawberries, and spice emerges over time. It’s silky and enveloping with fresh acidity and pretty wild berry fruits that gain in sweetness as they travel across the palate. It finishes long and staining yet still lively and spry, leaving a coating of fine tannins and licorice hints that resonate under an air of violet inner florals. The 2019 is a lovely interpretation of northern Montalcino fruit.

2021 Michele Satta Piastraia Bolgheri Superiore (750ml)
Cabernet Sauvignon from Bolgheri, Tuscany, Italy
B-21 Top Recommendation

“These wonderful wines have a savory and mineral accent, with an open window for enjoyment at a great price point.”

Audrey Frick, Jeb Dunnuck

From the pioneering champion of Sangiovese in Tuscany’s Bolgheri region, the rich and refined 95 pt. 2021 Michele Satta Piastraia Bolgheri Superiore reveals fresh, spiced dark fruit and vibrant acidity on a long, satisfying finish, a knockout Super Tuscan blend among the best values on the Wine Spectator’s Top 100 of 2024 and now unbeatably priced to stock the cellar.

Working as a consultant to some of Bolgheri’s earliest estates, Michele Satta became known as an expert in its coastal terroir, planting many of the region’s first vineyards including Ornellaia’s legendary Masseto and founding his winery in Castagneto Carducci two years before the Bolgheri DOC was established in 1982. Described by Jeb Dunnuck as producing accessible blends “with a unique elegance and sense of place from varietals not often championed on the Bolgheri coast,” Michele remained convinced of the area’s potential for producing Sangiovese despite its growing reputation for international grapes, now producing his portfolio from the family’s biodynamically farmed 24-hectare estate along with his son and second generation winemaker Giacomo Satta. Described by the Wine Advocate’s Monica Larner as embodying “the fierce spirit of independence that is encapsulated in all of Satta’s wines,” the 2021 Michele Satta Piastraia Bolgheri Superiore is a blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 20% Sangiovese, each varietal fermented separately with natural yeasts in cone-truncated oak barrels and aged in 20% new French oak for 18 months and another 24 months in bottle, yielding a fresh, vibrant blend with well-integrated acidity and harmonious tannins built to evolve over the next decade and showing “the potential of Sangiovese in this part of the Tuscan coast” according to critic Kerin O’Keefe.

Described by the Wine Advocate’s Monica Larner as reflecting Satta’s “remarkably smooth and elegant” house style, the graceful and silky 95 pt. 2021 Michele Satta Piastraia Bolgheri Superiore is built on a substantial backbone of depth and complexity that “makes you sit up and take notice,” according to Decanter’s James Button, a deliciously enticing and age worthy Super Tuscan blend made all the more appealing by a terrific value price.

The core flavors of black currant, black cherry and pomegranate are shaded by mint, violet, iron and toasty oak notes in this dense, rich red, with a matrix of polished tannins for support. The balance is excellent, as is the aftertaste. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Sangiovese. Best from 2026 through 2040. 2,900 cases made, 1,000 cases imported.

95 points, Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator (Oct 2024)

#18 - Wine Spectator Top 100 of 2024

A firm and composed red showing walnuts, dried herbs, clay, black fruit and cedar on the nose. It’s full-bodied, polished and compact, with firm yet fine-grained tannins. Toasted walnut character on a long finish. Drink from 2025.

94 points, James Suckling (Aug 2024)

With energetic fresh and dried cherries, plummy hints, a saline streak and a touch of bitter herbs, this is an invigorating Superiore which makes you sit up and take notice. It's still very youthful and the wood clamps down hard on the finish, so give it time to harmonise and enjoy this benchmark Bolgheri red!

From the acclaimed Walla Walla winery of former Pro Bowl quarterback Drew Bledsoe, it’s no surprise that the 94 pt. 2021 Bledsoe Family Winery Cabernet Sauvignon is a winning choice for lovers of powerful, age worthy Washington State Cabs, crafted with the same passion and dedication that was the hallmark of his pro football career and declared “championship-level by any standard” by the Wine Spectator’s Ben O’Donnell at best on the market pricing.

Trading the gridiron for winemaking in 2007, Drew Bledsoe returned to his home town of Walla Walla and crafted his first Cabernet Sauvignon with friend and top Washington State winemaker Chris Figgins of Leonetti Cellars, the inaugural vintage earning a spot on the Wine Spectator's Top 100 List. Hiring Figgins’ assistant winemaker and protege Josh McDaniels, Drew established Bledsoe Family Winery in 2017 to craft a value-driven Cab sourced from Bledsoe’s diverse vineyards across the Walla Walla AVA, blending mostly Cabernet Sauvignon with smaller amounts of Merlot, Petit Verdot and Malbec to add complexity and depth. From an outstanding vintage described as “a stellar year for Washington state” by Jeb Dunnuck, winemaker McDaniels aged the elegant 94 pt. 2021 Bledsoe Family Winery Cabernet Sauvignon for 22 months in a mix of 64% new French oak, 6% concrete tulip and 30% neutral oak, yielding richly concentrated, dark fruit hinting of sagebrush and graphite with layers of silky tannins, a lush, textured Cab that's ready to enjoy and promises a decade or more of longevity.

Described by the Wine Enthusiast’s Michael Alberty as “a rich yet elegant Cabernet Sauvignon that delivers optimal pleasure the minute it is opened,” the fresh and balanced 94 pt. 2021 Bledsoe Family Winery Cabernet Sauvignon exceeds its high achieving founder's goal of making a world-class Cab that over delivers value, offered at an unbeatable price that makes it an easy play-call for Washington Cab lovers to stock the cellar and enjoy often.

94WS #17 Top 100 93JD 93WE 93D 92JS

Broad-shouldered in style but rich and detailed, with blackberry and currant flavors accented by black olive, stony mineral and licorice notes that gather tension toward firm tannins. Needs time. Best from 2025 through 2033. 2,214 cases made.

94 points, Tim Fish, Wine Spectator (Oct 2024)

#17 - Wine Spectator Top 100 of 2024

The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon checks in as 75% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest nearly equal parts Merlot, Petit Verdot, and Malbec that spent 22 months mostly in French and neutral oak. It has ripe red and black plum, tobacco, loamy earth, and spicy oak notes in a medium to full-bodied, ripe, nicely balanced style. I like its overall concentration and depth, and it should benefit from 2-4 years of bottle age.

93 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Jul 2024)

This is a rich yet elegant Cabernet Sauvignon that delivers optimal pleasure the minute it is opened. You are greeted by ripe black cherry aromas that are encircled by notes of black coffee, leather and sandalwood. This is a medium-bodied wine with velvety tannins that delivers lengthy blackberry pie and anise flavors.

93 points, Michael Alberty, Wine Enthusiast (May 2024)

A savoury and fresh Cabernet Sauvignon from Walla Walla's Bledsoe Family Winery. Aromas of roasted hatch peppers and wild desert scrub are followed by red currant, pomegranate and whispers of gravelly minerals. The palate offers a tart red berry that becomes cocoa powder-covered black cherries. Hints of blood orange, sage, and crushed stone mineral notes finish the wine. Grippy tannins provide a structure with ample acidity that can allow this wine to lay down for several years.

93 points, Clive Pursehouse, Decanter (Jan 2024)

Generous array of berry fruit with notes of mulberries, blueberries, currants and shiso leaves. It’s juicy and pure with a medium body, fresh acidity and silky, fruit-driven layers. 75% cabernet sauvignon, 9% merlot, 9% petit verdot and 7% malbec. Delicious now but can hold.

Although this is a self-confidently rich and fleshy Cairanne, it also has a very well-crafted structure, the gentle tannins keeping the 15% alcohol on track. I love the dark, earthy finish that pulls you back to the glass for more. Drink or hold.

93 points, James Suckling (Apr 2022)

Black cherries and plums appear alongside hints of cedar and leather on the nose of the NV Cairanne Arcane La Temperance. It's full-bodied (labeled at 15% alcohol), yet not overly heavy, with silky tannins, peppery notes and even some brighter, raspberry-like nuances on the lingering finish. Given its structure and concentration, it should drink well for at least 4-5 years.

2019 Paul Jaboulet-Aine Hermitage La Chapelle (750ml)
Syrah from Hermitage, Rhône, France
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

Driving through the Northern Rhône Valley past the steeply sloping hillsides south of Tain L’Hermitage, first time visitors might notice a small centuries old chapel perched unassumingly among rows of vines. But lovers of Northern Rhone Syrah recognize this landmark as the hallowed ground of one of the greatest wines in the world, La Chapelle. Planting vineyards here almost two centuries ago, Antoine Jaboulet was at the forefront of establishing Hermitage (the region in fact named for the hermit who used to live in the chapel) as one of the most important wine producing regions of the world and later giving his name to the company – Paul Jaboulet Ainé (Ainé meaning the elder in French). It is always with great excitement that we offer a selection of the outstanding, highly rated wines of Jaboulet at incredible pre-arrival pricing, from the exceptional 2019 vintage.

Passed down from generation to generation and expanding through the years, Jaboulet now owns 120 hectares, producing fine wines from twenty six other appellations. Ten years after the untimely death of Gerard Jaboulet and a subsequent decline in quality, the Frey family, also owners of Château La Lagune in Bordeaux and part-owner of Champagne house Billecart-Salmon, purchased Jaboulet in 2006. Oenologist Caroline Frey implemented new winemaking practices (including a new barrel program from Bordeaux) and viticultural improvements (including a shift to organic and biodynamic vineyard practices), spearheading the estate’s recent renaissance and culminating in the stellar 2019 vintage. The extraordinary 2019 Jaboulet La Chapelle Hermitage is made from 100% Syrah from their top vineyard sites including Les Bessards, Le Meal and Les Rocoules. Formerly known as “Le Petite Chapelle,” the 2019 Jaboulet Hermitage Maison Bleue is sourced from the Rocoules section of the Hermitage hill, making it more approachable at a younger age. Sourced from the pebble-strewn lieu-dit Les Chassis, a vineyard owned by Jaboulet since its founding in 1834, the 2019 Crozes Hermitage Domaine de Thalabert exhibits Hermitage-like truffle nuances and velvety tannins. And for fans of Hermitage Blanc, the Marsanne-dominated 2019 Hermitage Le Chevalier De Sterimberg Blanc is elegant and cellar-worthy.

Upon taking over at Jaboulet, Carolyn Frey stated her aim for the estate was a simple one - “Nothing less than perfection.” The 2019 Jaboulet wines hit the mark, establishing a new standard for excellence upon a centuries-old tradition of excellence, offering exceptional quality now for an exceptional price.

Last year, I giddily speculated whether the 2019 Hermitage La Chapelle would warrant a 100-point score. While close—and I wouldn't completely discount it reaching that pinnacle in another decade or two—I'm not sure this wine is as good as I thought. It boasts exciting aromas of roasted meat, mocha, crushed stone, plum and cassis on the nose. It's full-bodied, concentrated, richly tannic and velvety in texture. It's long and complex on the finish, adding hints of cracked pepper and salted licorice. And yet, as much as I enjoyed tasting it and as undeniably great it is, angels didn't sing from the heavens. Maybe next bottle.

Finished in rum casks, the honey and orange zest aromas suggest a cocktail, not a straight pour of Scotch. Grapes for the 2021 Angeli Zinfandel are picked in three passes. Proprietor Scot Bilbro notes that Zinfandel's naturally varying levels of ripeness can lead to raisiny flavors if all the grapes are picked at a higher brix. "If you bring Zinfandel in over 25 brix, that means the juice inside is at 25, but the skins have a lot more sugar, and the level will go up to 28 or more," he explains. "So, we pick at 23, 24 and just shy of 25. You can enable the wine to show off layers with those different picks." This strategy led to a gorgeous Angeli in 2021 that is incredibly expressive and perfumed. Blueberry, boysenberry and blackberry give way to wafts of graphite, gobs of violet and even touches of tangerine. The medium to full-bodied palate explodes with concentrated fruit and expansive layers of floral perfume and spice. It has a powdery frame, bursts of mouthwatering acidity and a very long, nuanced finish.

Described as a “drop dead classic” and “impossible to ignore” by Eric Guido of Vinous, the stunning full-bodied 95 pt. 2019 Mastroberardino Radici boasts vivid silky-textured fruit with bright energetic acidity and beautifully ripe tannins, a broad-shouldered Taurasi from Campania’s benchmark estate built for a long and epic evolution over the next few decades and offered at an equally thrilling value price to enjoy often.

Returning from World War II to find his family’s Irpinia estate in Italy’s Southern Apennines in ruins, ninth generation Antonio Mastroberardino set about bringing the historic property back from the brink of near devastation caused by war, economic depression and phylloxera, his efforts over the next decades credited with relaunching viticulture in the Campania region. Tasked with replanting the vineyards, Antonio made a critical decision to eschew the pressure to plant popular international grape varieties and instead is credited with nearly single handedly preventing the region’s indigenous grapes including the red Aglianico from extinction and establishing Mastroberardino as the region’s benchmark for quality, earning Taurasi the nickname of “the Barolo of the south” and helping it gain DOCG status in 1992. Overseen by his son Piero for the last two decades, Mastroberardino’s 260-hectare estate spans a biodiverse mix of sustainably farmed vineyards, forest and olive groves, the low yielding Aglianico vines for the Radici planted on steep slopes in a mix of clay and sandy volcanic and limestone soils across two diverse subregions ranging from 350 to 650 meters above sea level. Crafted by winemaker Massimo di Renzo with a minimal focus on extraction and fermented in stainless steel with native yeasts, the powerful flagship 2019 Mastroberardino Radici was aged for 24 months in a combination of French oak barriques and Slavonian oak casks with an additional minimum 24 months in bottle, yielding rich aromatic black fruit with nuances of graphite and smoke, the deep and complex Taurasi described by Eric Guido of Vinous as “notably energetic, with a beautiful purity of fruit and tannins that promise further development.”

Crafted by the region’s reference point producer considered “the royal family of Campania,” Antonio Galloni of Vinous calls Mastroberardino’s Taurasi “a legendary wine that can rival the best from any region,” highly recommending it for “readers seeking to build a collection of fine, cellar worthy wines” without breaking the bank, the impressive 95 pt. 2019 Mastroberardino Radici unbeatably priced for lovers of bold Italian reds to stock the cellar and enjoy its thrilling evolution for decades to come.

The 2019 Taurasi Radici is impossible to ignore, mixing cloves with incense, crushed stones and dried black cherries. This is saturating and intense, with a silken textural wave that ushers in masses of tart wild berry fruits and spices, all carried by a stream of vibrant acidity. It finishes long and youthfully tense, with a mineral tinge that lingers along with notes of black licorice and a sour cranberry crunch. In 2019, the Taurasi Radici is back to form.

95 points, Eric Guido, Vinous (May 2024)

Vivid dark ruby color, with aromas of blueberry jelly, earth, black truffles, toasted pepper and chocolate. Velvety on the palate, with juicy acidity, a full body and very good fruit concentration. Great complexity and polish in the finish. Drink or hold.

95 points, James Suckling (Apr 2024)
