2018 Giant Steps Pinot Noir Wombat Creek Vineyard (750ml)
Pinot Noir from Yarra Valley, Victoria, Australia
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More When John Coltrane split with Miles Davis in the late '50s, he wasted little time releasing his visionary Giant Steps album. Winemaker Phil Sexton was inspired by the album and Coltrane's foresight thus naming his wine in Coltrane's honor. Sexton chose Yarra Valley because of his admiration for the long aging and fine boned wines produced by the new generation of wine growers reestablishing this historic wine region. Giant Steps focuses primarily on the distinctive expression of single vineyard sites in the Yarra Valley. Grapes are sourced from estate and leased vineyards as well as fruit from long-term grower contracts. Wombat Creek is the highest elevation vineyard in the Yarra, planted in the late 1980s in ferric volcanic soils and rock. The 2018s are in stride, showing the serious potential of Wombat Creek under Sexton's hand. In no way do the wines favor that pudgy marsupial.

Expanding to over 130 acres of sustainably certified vineyards over the last decades and now owned by the legendary Champagne house Bollinger, the 2022 Ponzi Pinot Noir Laurelwood was sourced primarily from estate vineyards along with grower partners exclusively from the newly established Laurelwood AVA in the Chehalem Mountains, its distinctive soil of windblown loess over ancient basalt bedrock adding abundant spice notes to the Pinot Noir as well as a backbone of dark, brambly tannins. Named “one of the brightest stars among the new generation in Oregon,” Burgundy-trained winemaker Luisa Ponzi fermented the hand sorted grapes in small lots with native yeasts before aging the richly textured 2022 Ponzi Pinot Noir Laurelwood in 30% new French oak for 10 months, yielding “a tension filled core of tart red berry fruit and spice elevated by juicy acidity” according to Vinous critic Eric Guido ready to enjoy over the next five or more years. 2019 Paul Jaboulet-Aine Hermitage La Chapelle (750ml)
Syrah from Hermitage, Rhône, France
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More Driving through the Northern Rhône Valley past the steeply sloping hillsides south of Tain L’Hermitage, first time visitors might notice a small centuries old chapel perched unassumingly among rows of vines. But lovers of Northern Rhone Syrah recognize this landmark as the hallowed ground of one of the greatest wines in the world, La Chapelle. Planting vineyards here almost two centuries ago, Antoine Jaboulet was at the forefront of establishing Hermitage (the region in fact named for the hermit who used to live in the chapel) as one of the most important wine producing regions of the world and later giving his name to the company – Paul Jaboulet Ainé (Ainé meaning the elder in French). It is always with great excitement that we offer a selection of the outstanding, highly rated wines of Jaboulet at incredible pre-arrival pricing, from the exceptional 2019 vintage. Passed down from generation to generation and expanding through the years, Jaboulet now owns 120 hectares, producing fine wines from twenty six other appellations. Ten years after the untimely death of Gerard Jaboulet and a subsequent decline in quality, the Frey family, also owners of Château La Lagune in Bordeaux and part-owner of Champagne house Billecart-Salmon, purchased Jaboulet in 2006. Oenologist Caroline Frey implemented new winemaking practices (including a new barrel program from Bordeaux) and viticultural improvements (including a shift to organic and biodynamic vineyard practices), spearheading the estate’s recent renaissance and culminating in the stellar 2019 vintage. The extraordinary 2019 Jaboulet La Chapelle Hermitage is made from 100% Syrah from their top vineyard sites including Les Bessards, Le Meal and Les Rocoules. Formerly known as “Le Petite Chapelle,” the 2019 Jaboulet Hermitage Maison Bleue is sourced from the Rocoules section of the Hermitage hill, making it more approachable at a younger age. Sourced from the pebble-strewn lieu-dit Les Chassis, a vineyard owned by Jaboulet since its founding in 1834, the 2019 Crozes Hermitage Domaine de Thalabert exhibits Hermitage-like truffle nuances and velvety tannins. And for fans of Hermitage Blanc, the Marsanne-dominated 2019 Hermitage Le Chevalier De Sterimberg Blanc is elegant and cellar-worthy. Upon taking over at Jaboulet, Carolyn Frey stated her aim for the estate was a simple one - “Nothing less than perfection.” The 2019 Jaboulet wines hit the mark, establishing a new standard for excellence upon a centuries-old tradition of excellence, offering exceptional quality now for an exceptional price.

Wayfarer Estate Pinot Noir, each showing layered complexity and exceptional finesse and both offered at best on the market pricing. Legendary for producing top notch Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Chardonnay in Napa for over four decades, Jason Pahlmeyer turned his eye to producing Burgundian style wines in the Fort Ross-Seaview AVA in the 1990's, purchasing Wayfarer on the advice of winemaker Helen Turley who believed it was destined to be "the La Tache of California.” Named by its former off the grid owners who dreamed of travelling the world, the Wayfarer property is located high on the remote King Ridge of the Sonoma Coast at around 1,100 feet above sea level, bordered by a thick forest of redwoods to the east and fog-covered bluffs to the west and cooled by Pacific Ocean breezes. Now managed by Jayson’s daughter Cleo, the organically farmed 30 acre Wayfarer vineyard is planted in Fort Ross-Seaview’s unique Goldridge soil, a sandy loam over a deep layer of sandstone ideal for growing Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes, and divided into 30 meticulously tended blocks, each planted with a carefully selected clone according to the aspect, elevation and slope of the parcel. From “unquestionably a special vintage for Chardonnay” according to Antonio Galloni of Vinous, the rich and luxurious 98 pt. 2021 Wayfarer Estate Chardonnay was aged by winemaker Todd Kohn in 64% new French oak for 15 months, revealing richly aromatic layered fruit with fresh, impeccably balanced acidity on “an epically long finish” according to the Wine Advocate’s Erin Brooks and built to evolve for another decade. Situated on a biodiverse 30-hectare hilltop estate that includes an olive grove of 1,000 trees, Le Cinciole owners Luca Orsini and Valeria Vigano produce their measured, thoughtful wines from 11-hectares of biodynamically farmed vineyards in the Conca d’Oro, the amphitheater-shaped “golden basin” considered the Grand Cru of the region, planted in galestro soils of clay and schist ranging from 400 to 450 meters above sea level at one of the highest elevations in the region. Described as “one of the most distinctive wines in the appellation” by Vinous critic Antonio Galloni, the remarkably expressive 93 pt. 2019 Le Cinciole Chianti Classico and 92 pt. 2020 Le Cinciole Chianti Classico entry level cuvees were crafted from 100% Sangiovese and aged for 12 months in medium French oak barrels and a year in concrete before bottling, yielding seductive, earthy fruit and elegant tannins and described as “a perennial overperformer” by Decanter’s Michaela Morris that’s not to be missed. Crafted from 100% Sangiovese and aged well beyond the minimum requirement of 30 months for Chianti Classico's elite Gran Selezione category, Decanter critic Morris named the elegant 96 pt. 2016 Le Cinciole Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Aluigi one of her Top 10 wines of 2021, its luscious core of rich Sangiovese fruit and balanced mineral driven acidity boasting “quite a wow factor,” while Monica Larner of the Wine Advocate describes the “bold” 95 pt. 2018 Gran Selezione Aluigi as having “a lovely defined character” and Antonio Galloni of Vinous praises the 96 pt. 2019 Gran Selezione Aluigi as setting the gold standard for the classification, exclaiming “what a gorgeous wine this is.” A deeply layered blend of Cabernet Sauvignon with Syrah and Merlot, the exquisite 95 pt. 2016 Le Cinciole Camalaione is “absolutely gorgeous” according to critic Galloni, boasting lush dark fruits with remarkable persistence and balanced acidity, while the powerful 94 pt. 2017 Le Cinciole Camalaione “packs a huge punch” and the enticing 96 pt. 2018 Le Cinciole Camalaione is “a knockout,” describing the atypical blend as offering “stunning depth and textural intensity.” Sourced from 100% Sangiovese grown in a single vineyard at the estate’s highest elevation, Antonio Galloni calls the flagship 97 pt. 2017 Le Cinciole Petresco “breathtaking” while the 98 pt. 2019 Le Cinciole Petresco boasts “notable depth and intensity,” and like all Le Cinciole’s top cuvees, both are built to deliver pleasurable drinking over the next decade and beyond. While Panzano and the Conca D’Oro have gained notoriety among collectors as the home to high profile producers like Fontodi, Le Cinciole's top scoring wines remain among Tuscany’s hidden treasures, still seeming “to fly under the radar” according to Antonio Galloni and a rare opportunity for lovers and collectors of bold Tuscan reds to “strike gold” and scoop up a stash of Le Cinciole’s purely irresistible wines at unbeatable prices.

2010 Domenico Clerico Percristina (750ml)
Nebbiolo from Barolo, Piedmont, Italy
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More Touring Piedmont, I tasted through the top producers' finished wines from the much heralded 2016 vintage, basic Barolo through top Crus. Stunning wines greeted me at one address after another, many reminding me of legendary bottlings from 1989 or '90. Clerico's dazzling offers as usual punctuated my trip, a very definite exclamation point and among the finest set of wines of this tremendous vintage. Domenico grew up in these hills, and when he entered the wine business he began assembling small parcels of the most prestigious vineyards in Monforte d'Alba. Ciabot Mentin and Pajana in Ginestre soon followed – then the prized Serralunga – each showing Nebbiolo in a different shade of dark beauty. Most vines were planted in the '50s and '70s, old vines abound here. Because of these very old vines, Clerico tops the charts even in difficult harvests; hand this estate a vintage as perfect as 2016 and you're in for skyscraper-like quality. Again in this vintage Ciabot Mentin tops my chart. And the sexy spice and depth of spine-tingling complexity is on full display in Pajana and the best Aeroplan Servaj yet. A line up that represents the life and work of Domenico Clerico.

2019 Brezza Barolo Sarmassa (750ml)
Nebbiolo from Barolo, Piedmont, Italy
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More Ranking among “the finest Barolos being made” by the Wine Enthusiast’s Kerin O’Keefe, the elegant 96 pt. 2019 Brezza Barolo Cannubi boasts brightly perfumed aromas and silky, red spiced fruit with layered complexity that has made Cannubi one of Barolo’s most famed and collectible Crus, bargain priced at a fraction of its better-known competitors and available in a variety of age worthy formats for stocking the cellar. Located just a few steps from the center of the town of Barolo, the historic Brezza winery is run by fourth generation Enzo and his nephew Francesco, continuing the family tradition of bottling wines from estate grown Nebbiolo fruit since 1910. Considered icons of traditional winemaking while employing sustainable practices including organic viticulture for over a decade, Brezza’s vineyards span a total of 16.5 hectares surrounded by hazelnut groves, its 1.4-hectare parcel in Cannubi originally planted between 1993 and 2003. Situated where two of Barolo’s most important geological formations meet (Cannubi coming from the Latin “connubio” or marriage), Brezza’s Cannubi parcel is located on the prime central part of the hill, its Nebbiolo vines planted in a mix of silty sand, clay and limestone at 250 meters above sea level on a southeasterly orientation favorable for even ripening. Surrounded by the highest slopes of La Morra, Castiglione Falletto and Monforte that shelter it from the cold and wind, Enzo and Francesco cultivate their sloping Cannubi vineyard by hand, employing techniques like green harvesting and thinning to further lower yields. After fermenting the hand harvested grapes with native yeasts in stainless steel, the supple and sleek 2019 Brezza Barolo Cannubi was aged in a mix of large, used Slavonian oak barrels for 24 months before being bottled unfiltered and unfined and cellared for another year prior to release, maintaining its fresh acidity while integrating refined tannins that promise over a decade of longevity. From a “stellar vintage” that will “thrill readers who appreciate the nuance, subtlety and structure of Nebbiolo” according to Vinous critic Galloni, the powerful 96 pt. 2019 Brezza Cannubi is an elegantly crafted, finessed Barolo from a top Cru that’s well-priced for savvy collectors to enjoy often without breaking the bank, at an unbeatable value.

2016 Jim Barry Shiraz The Armagh (750ml)
Shiraz from Clare Valley, South Australia, Australia
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More It was Jim Barry's drive and community spirit that helped shape South Australia's Clare Valley as a benchmark producer of world-class Riesling and cemented its place as one of Australia's premier wine regions. Jim Barry Wines has a strong lineage. Jim himself was the first qualified winemaker in the Clare Valley, graduating with the 17th Degree in Oenology from the famous Roseworthy Agricultural College in 1947. Working for 22 years as winemaker at a large cooperative, Jim Barry became a pioneer of Australian table wine. He then went on to establish Taylors Wines in 1969. His wife Nancy proved a driving force in the formation of Jim Barry Wines, and sons Peter, Mark & John were involved in the company's rise. Peter Barry became managing director in 1985. Today Peter's children Tom, Sam and Olivia work for Jim Barry Wines as winemaker, commercial manager and brand ambassador respectively. Current custodians Peter & Sue Barry are deeply proud that Jim Barry Wines is still family owned, with three generations of Roseworthy graduates. The Barry family name is synonymous with the Clare wine region and their deep ties to the local community continue to this day. The Armagh Shiraz has achieved extraordinary success and is regarded as one of Australia's highest quality wines. The vineyard was named after the adjoining hamlet of Armagh, established by Irish settlers in 1849 and named after the lush rolling hills of their homeland. Jim Barry planted the 8 acre vineyard in 1968 with Shiraz grapes. The vineyard is planted on its own roots on grey sandy abrasive topsoil over clay subsoil and receives an average rainfall 20 inches per year. Such is The Armagh vineyards suitability that minimal intervention is needed to maintain very low yields yields below 4 tons per hectare, which produce rich and concentrated fruit of the rare quality required to produce wines with aging potential. From the first vintage in 1985, The Armagh has achieved remarkable success and has become highly collectable.

B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More "The 2020 Cirerets, 60% Garnacha and 40% Cariñena, shows clean aromas and flavors, definition and elegance within the powerful, ripe and concentrated style from Priorat and the winery." - Luis Gutiérrez, Wine Advocate Balancing the fresh, pure flavors of Garnacha with the elegance and complexity of old-vine Cariñena, the 2020 Bodegas Mas Alta Cirerets is a bargain-priced beauty, boasting luscious fruit, wild herbs, and flinty minerality while delivering serious bang for the buck for lovers of robust, terroir-driven Spanish reds. Although often overshadowed by more famous regions like Ribera del Duero and Rioja, the rugged, remote Priorat DOC southwest of Barcelona has gained an elite reputation among collectors over the last several decades, its unforgiving, steep vineyards planted on the dark, decomposed slate known as llicorella mixed with shale and red clay, which produces highly rated red blends, often with stratospheric prices to match their critical acclaim. Established in 1999 as a joint project under the direction of renowned Rhône négociant and winemaker Michel Tardieu and the late, iconic French enologist Philippe Cambie, Bodega Mas Alta crafted the outstanding value-driven Cirerets in the village of Vilella Alta, its organically farmed vineyards located at high altitudes from 100 to 600 meters in the shadow of the Serra del Montsant mountains. A blend of Garnacha (Grenache) from 20-year-old vines and Cariñena (Carignan) from low-yielding, 60-year-old vines, the outstanding 2018 Cirerets was fermented in concrete tanks with local yeasts, then aged separately for 16 months before blending – the Garnacha in used barrels and the Cariñena in new ones – yielding elegant, velvety tannins finishing with mineral-tinged acidity rooted in the region's unique volcanic soils. Drawing praise from Robert Parker over a decade ago for producing top values in the region, Mas Alta's bright and youthful 2020 Cirerets continues the trend with 94+ points from Wine Advocate's Luis Gutiérrez and can't-miss, sub-$40 price for a stunning collectible value.

Located in Castiglione Falletto, it is no surprise that Azelia's village Barolo is primarily sourced here and is styled to drink upon release; very elegant and refined. Showing more power depth and structure, Azelia's single vineyard wines from Serralunga d'Alba are San Rocco and Margheria. 2021 Faust Cabernet Sauvignon The Pact (750ml)
Cabernet Sauvignon from Coombsville, California
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More “No deal with the devil required - the Huneeus family was ahead of the game when they staked a Cabernet claim in Coombsville with Faust.” James Molesworth, Wine Spectator A decadent, age-worthy Napa Cab from the team behind Quintessa, the powerful 97-point 2021 Faust Cabernet Sauvignon The Pact impeccably balances rich dark fruit, tantalizing minerality and layered, refined tannins, sourced from an exceptional Napa vintage described as “fabulous” by Antonio Galloni of Vinous and promising over a decade of enjoyment at an unbeatable price. One of the first to recognize the potential for growing Cabernet Sauvignon in the remote southeastern corner of Napa Valley, visionary Quintessa founder Agustin Huneeus established the Faust winery in Coombsville in 1998 three years before it was recognized as an AVA, the region's growing reputation for exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon attracting some of Napa’s top winemakers over the last two decades including Andy Erickson and Paul Hobbs. Known for developing Mondavi’s Opus One and rebuilding Cardinale and Rudd, then Faust winemaker Charles Thomas recognized the unique attributes of the estate’s lower yielding, higher altitude parcels and began to separate those plots of Coombsville fruit for a new bottling in 2007, naming it “The Pact” after Goethe’s classic Faustian bargain of making "a deal with the devil.” Located on a 128-acre hillside estate in well-draining rocky, volcanic soils, the elevated, low yielding parcels for the Pact are influenced by a unique ‘cup and saucer’ like ridge called the ‘caldera’ funneling winds from the San Pablo Bay and creating conditions for extended, gradual ripening, while overnight fog lingering late into the morning lowers temperatures and enhances the Cabernet's natural acidity. A Napa Valley veteran who produced top scoring Cabs at Harlan, Joseph Phelps and Groth, winemaker David Jelinek vinified each parcel for The Pact separately and aged the final blend of 96% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2% Petit Verdot and 2% Merlot for 22 months in 45% new French oak before bottling, yielding a seductively smooth Cab described by James Suckling as “really complex and flavor intensive” promising to age beautifully and declaring “I can’t wait.” The richly textured 2021 Faust Cabernet Sauvignon The Pact was among a handful of the highest rated Coombsville Cabs of the vintage yet priced at a fraction of the region’s higher profile producers, delivering one the best values in Napa Cab and an exceptional pour to enjoy over the next and beyond.

Tasked with replanting the vineyards, Antonio made a critical decision to eschew the pressure to plant popular international grape varieties and instead is credited with nearly single handedly preventing the region’s indigenous grapes including the red Aglianico from extinction and establishing Mastroberardino as the region’s benchmark for quality, earning Taurasi the nickname of “the Barolo of the south” and helping it gain DOCG status in 1992. Overseen by his son Piero for the last two decades, Mastroberardino’s 260-hectare estate spans a biodiverse mix of sustainably farmed vineyards, forest and olive groves, the low yielding Aglianico vines for the Radici planted on steep slopes in a mix of clay and sandy volcanic and limestone soils across two diverse subregions ranging from 350 to 650 meters above sea level.
