Good Til Gone

Good til Gone? Yes. Well, it's pretty simple. The wine is good. Really good. But is has to go. And when it's gone, it's gone. Sometimes we just buy too darn much. With thousands of wines coming and going, there's lots going on around here. Wines are overlooked and sit idle, and need a nudge.

Browse through this list and check back as we’re sure to add to it. Nothing compromised. These aren't auction goods or close-outs where provenance is a question. It's all good. Prices progressively reduced monthly, so some serious bargains here. Best take a look sooner than later. Prices are good til gone.

2020 Bonny Doon Vineyard Vin Gris de Cigare (750ml)
Grenache from California
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

Described by Bonny Doon's founder and winemaker Randall Grahm as his "pink wine of the earth," the Vin Gris de Cigare has been a rosé of great complexity and character since its first release featuring an ever changing blend of Rhone varietals. The outstanding 2020 Bonny Doon Vin Gris de Cigare Rose is primarily Grenache, with lesser amounts of Cinsault, Mourvedre, Clairette Blanche, Grenache Blanc and Vermentino, a skillfully balanced blend of fruit and acidity. Sourced from vineyards in Monterey County, Paso Robles, and Arroyo Seco, the wine is stirred on the lees after fermentaton, adding a wonderfully creamy texture. Known for pioneering the planting of Rhone varietals on California's Central Coast causing the Wine Spectator to famously dub him "The Rhone Ranger," Grahm produces a rosé that is dry and crisp, balancing fruit, spice and herb notes with tantalizing acidity. The 2020 Bonny Doon Vin Gris de Cigare Rosé is a delight, offering pale pink refreshment with stony minerality and just the right amount of fruit flavors, making it a rosé you'll want to sip again and again.

92WE 90V

Joyous aromas of strawberry are splashed with lemon juice and pink rose petals on the nose of this bottling. The palate tightens up a bit, providing melon, tangerine-cream and wet gravel flavors atop a chalky texture.

92 points, Matt Kettmann, Wine Enthusiast (Sep 2021)

Light, shimmering orange. Fresh red berry and citrus fruit aromas are complemented by suggestions of candied rose and pungent herbs. Silky and open-knit, showing good depth to the raspberry, cherry and bitter orange pith flavors. Tightens up slowly on a long, spice-inflected finish that leaves a gently sweet red fruit note behind.

NV Henriot Blanc de Blancs Brut (750ml)
Chardonnay from Champagne, France

92WE 91WS

The Henriot style goes for mature Champagnes, both with reserve wines and with a base of an older vintage. This wine, based on the 2008 vintage, is no exception. It has a toasty character, mineral and zesty texture, and layers of attractive acidity. It's crisp, yeasty and ready to drink.

92 points, Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast (Aug 2018)

A bright, finely tuned Blanc de Blancs, with a subtle tang of salinity and flavors of lemon meringue pie, glazed apricot, pink grapefruit granita and blanched almond. Creamy and mouthwatering, with a lingering smoke-tinged finish. Drink now through 2019. 1,000 cases imported.

2019 Paul Jaboulet-Aine Hermitage La Chapelle (750ml)
Syrah from Hermitage, Rhône, France
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

Driving through the Northern Rhône Valley past the steeply sloping hillsides south of Tain L’Hermitage, first time visitors might notice a small centuries old chapel perched unassumingly among rows of vines. But lovers of Northern Rhone Syrah recognize this landmark as the hallowed ground of one of the greatest wines in the world, La Chapelle. Planting vineyards here almost two centuries ago, Antoine Jaboulet was at the forefront of establishing Hermitage (the region in fact named for the hermit who used to live in the chapel) as one of the most important wine producing regions of the world and later giving his name to the company – Paul Jaboulet Ainé (Ainé meaning the elder in French). It is always with great excitement that we offer a selection of the outstanding, highly rated wines of Jaboulet at incredible pre-arrival pricing, from the exceptional 2019 vintage.

Passed down from generation to generation and expanding through the years, Jaboulet now owns 120 hectares, producing fine wines from twenty six other appellations. Ten years after the untimely death of Gerard Jaboulet and a subsequent decline in quality, the Frey family, also owners of Château La Lagune in Bordeaux and part-owner of Champagne house Billecart-Salmon, purchased Jaboulet in 2006. Oenologist Caroline Frey implemented new winemaking practices (including a new barrel program from Bordeaux) and viticultural improvements (including a shift to organic and biodynamic vineyard practices), spearheading the estate’s recent renaissance and culminating in the stellar 2019 vintage. The extraordinary 2019 Jaboulet La Chapelle Hermitage is made from 100% Syrah from their top vineyard sites including Les Bessards, Le Meal and Les Rocoules. Formerly known as “Le Petite Chapelle,” the 2019 Jaboulet Hermitage Maison Bleue is sourced from the Rocoules section of the Hermitage hill, making it more approachable at a younger age. Sourced from the pebble-strewn lieu-dit Les Chassis, a vineyard owned by Jaboulet since its founding in 1834, the 2019 Crozes Hermitage Domaine de Thalabert exhibits Hermitage-like truffle nuances and velvety tannins. And for fans of Hermitage Blanc, the Marsanne-dominated 2019 Hermitage Le Chevalier De Sterimberg Blanc is elegant and cellar-worthy.

Upon taking over at Jaboulet, Carolyn Frey stated her aim for the estate was a simple one - “Nothing less than perfection.” The 2019 Jaboulet wines hit the mark, establishing a new standard for excellence upon a centuries-old tradition of excellence, offering exceptional quality now for an exceptional price.

Last year, I giddily speculated whether the 2019 Hermitage La Chapelle would warrant a 100-point score. While close—and I wouldn't completely discount it reaching that pinnacle in another decade or two—I'm not sure this wine is as good as I thought. It boasts exciting aromas of roasted meat, mocha, crushed stone, plum and cassis on the nose. It's full-bodied, concentrated, richly tannic and velvety in texture. It's long and complex on the finish, adding hints of cracked pepper and salted licorice. And yet, as much as I enjoyed tasting it and as undeniably great it is, angels didn't sing from the heavens. Maybe next bottle.

2018 Chateau Canon la Gaffeliere (750ml)
Merlot from Saint-Emilion, Bordeaux, France

97V 96WS 96JS 95WA 95JD

The 2018 Canon La Gaffelière is bright, punchy and full of character, just as it was from barrel. Sage, blood orange, mocha and spice add pretty aromatic top notes to a core of inky red/purplish berry fruit. All the elements are so well balanced in this super-expressive Saint-Émilion. Bright floral and savory Franc notes punctuate the salivating finish, mineral-drenched finish. The 2018 needs a lot of air to open, but when it does, it is dynamite.

97 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Mar 2021)

This has a lovely core of mulled cassis, damson plum and raspberry reduction notes, framed with an applewood note that integrates nicely while red tea, savory and chalky mineral notes develop through the finish. Restrained style, precise and very long. Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Best from 2024 through 2038. 5,833 cases made.

96 points, James Molesworth, Wine Spectator (Mar 2021)

Fantastic depth and richness to the nose with plums, mushrooms, bark and some mahogany. Full-bodied, tight and focused with very fine tannins and a long, creamy finish. Lovely polish, balance and clarity. Drink after 2025.

96 points, James Suckling (Mar 2021)

Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, the 2018 Canon la Gaffeliere out of the gate delivers a seductive nose of plum preserves, kirsch and Black Forest cake with nuances of lilacs, underbrush, Indian spices and dusty soil. The medium to full-bodied palate is filled with black fruit preserves and loads of spicy accents, supported by chewy tannins and well-balanced freshness, finishing long and savory.

95+ points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate (Mar 2021)

Another beautiful vintage for this cuvée, the 2018 Château Canon La Gaffelière is based on 50% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Cabernet Sauvignon, brought up in 50% new French oak, with the balance all in used barrels. It's never the biggest or richest wine in the vintage yet always has a classic Saint-Emilion elegance as well as brilliant minerality. The 2018 reveals a dense purple hue to go with an already complex bouquet of kirsch, blackberries, new saddle leather, bouquet garni, tobacco, and flowery incense. With medium to full-bodied richness, a seamless, elegant texture, ripe tannins, and a great finish, it builds nicely with time in the glass and is a complex, flawlessly balanced Saint-Emilion that offers both hedonistic and intellectual pleasure. It's going to keep for 20-30 years, and I'd recommend a healthy decant or a good 4-6 years of bottle age.

2017 Lackner-Tinnacher Ried Flamberg Morillon G STK (750ml)
Chardonnay from Südsteiermark, Steiermark, Austria

95WA

From coralline limestone soils and bottled in late April, the 2017 Ried Flamberg Morillon –G STK– is pure, cool and reductive on the nose. Aged on the full lees for nearly one year in large oak vats, this is a lush, highly elegant, intense and persistent Morillon with ripe and concentrated, lemon-fresh fruit and lingering salty grip. A fascinating, great wine with so much tension and mineral vitality. Fabulous and a duty to buy. The wine was vinified in old and oval-shaped ten- and 25-hectoliter vats. Tasted in May 2019.

2016 Jim Barry Shiraz The Armagh (750ml)
Shiraz from Clare Valley, South Australia, Australia
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

It was Jim Barry's drive and community spirit that helped shape South Australia's Clare Valley as a benchmark producer of world-class Riesling and cemented its place as one of Australia's premier wine regions. Jim Barry Wines has a strong lineage. Jim himself was the first qualified winemaker in the Clare Valley, graduating with the 17th Degree in Oenology from the famous Roseworthy Agricultural College in 1947. Working for 22 years as winemaker at a large cooperative, Jim Barry became a pioneer of Australian table wine. He then went on to establish Taylors Wines in 1969. His wife Nancy proved a driving force in the formation of Jim Barry Wines, and sons Peter, Mark & John were involved in the company's rise. Peter Barry became managing director in 1985. Today Peter's children Tom, Sam and Olivia work for Jim Barry Wines as winemaker, commercial manager and brand ambassador respectively. Current custodians Peter & Sue Barry are deeply proud that Jim Barry Wines is still family owned, with three generations of Roseworthy graduates. The Barry family name is synonymous with the Clare wine region and their deep ties to the local community continue to this day.

The Armagh Shiraz has achieved extraordinary success and is regarded as one of Australia's highest quality wines. The vineyard was named after the adjoining hamlet of Armagh, established by Irish settlers in 1849 and named after the lush rolling hills of their homeland. Jim Barry planted the 8 acre vineyard in 1968 with Shiraz grapes. The vineyard is planted on its own roots on grey sandy abrasive topsoil over clay subsoil and receives an average rainfall 20 inches per year. Such is The Armagh vineyards suitability that minimal intervention is needed to maintain very low yields yields below 4 tons per hectare, which produce rich and concentrated fruit of the rare quality required to produce wines with aging potential. From the first vintage in 1985, The Armagh has achieved remarkable success and has become highly collectable.

99JS 97WA

Wow. This is a bold, brassy shiraz that carries a wealth of very intense aromas of ripe blackberries, dark plums, licorice and sweetly spiced earth. Still so very youthful and primary. The palate is so powerful, so mouth-filling and so, so juicy. This manages to deliver such intensity and composure. Supple, long and deep-set tannins and heroically expressive fruit. Really impressive now, but this will deliver much more over the next two decades. One of the finest releases to date.

99 points, James Suckling (Jun 2020)

My pick of the recently bottled vintages, the 2016 The Armagh Shiraz shows a bit more obvious oak (simply because of its youth) but also a wonderful taut tension between ripeness and acidity. The fruit here is a bit redder in profile, leaning more toward raspberries than blackberries, while still being fully ripe. Full-bodied and supple, it finishes cedary, intense and long, adding in complex, lingering spice notes.

2015 Lutum Chardonnay Durell (750ml)
Chardonnay from Sonoma Coast, California

93V 92WS 92WE

The Chardonnay Durell is quite understated in this vintage. Usually much more overt, the 2015 has a weightless feel that is hugely appealing. Orange peel, savory herbs, mint and dried flowers give the wine its aromatic nuance, while the fruit lies more in the background. There is plenty to like here.

93+ points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Sep 2017)

Offers concentrated and pure-tasting flavors of fresh-cut apple, Asian pear and kiwifruit that are rich, with tensile minerality. Smoky notes show on the long, well-honed finish. Drink now through 2024. 172 cases made.

92 points, Kim Marcus, Wine Spectator (Oct 2018)

This producer's light take on the variety continues to impress with this vintage. Anise and oak hints combine on the nose to invite one in for an elegant taste of bright, juicy acidity and refined lemon and green apple flavors.

2018 Clos Apalta (375ml)
Carmenere from Apalta Vineyard, Colchagua Valley, Chile
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

Powerful, intense, concentrated and breathtaking – these are the words critics use again and again to describe the mighty Clos Apalta, a singular wine from over 100-year-old vines from world-class producer Casa Lapostolle. The legendary Carmenere-based Bordeaux style blend, first released in 1997, has gone on to garner the top praise of critics across the board, including three 100pt ratings in the last five vintages. Wine critic James Suckling summarizes it best, "There’s no doubt that Clos Apalta is one of the world’s greatest red wines." This release of the exceptional 2018 Clos Apalta is the opportunity to secure your allocation of this iconic wine, at the best price available anywhere for a limited time.

With a vision of producing a premium quality wine using a blend of French expertise and Chilean terroir, French Grand Marnier heiress Alexandra Marnier Lapostolle and her husband Cyril de Bournet tapped renowned French oenologist Michel Rolland to exclusively lead the winemaking team (Rolland was contractually prevented from working for any other Chilean winery), setting the now eponymous Chilean winery and its signature blend on the fast track to success. Sourced primarily from two blocks of old vine Carmenere and Cabernet Sauvignon dating to the 1920s planted on granitic soils, the unique microclimate created by the surrounding Cordillera (or Coastal Mountains) creates a shadow yielding less sunshine overall paired with frequent morning mist, optimal conditions for ripening Carmenere yet maintaining its freshness. Now under the direction of their son Charles-Henri de Bournet, the 2018 Clos Apalta exhibits the signature aromatics of spice, chocolate and roasted pepper, with plush dark plum fruit and juicy tannins, and rippling layers of complexity on the lingering finish. With past vintages named five times to the Wine Spectator Top 100 (including being the only South American wine ever to garner the coveted #1), the 2018 Clos Apalta indeed stands shoulder to shoulder with the world's greatest red wines.

98JS 96WA

So aromatic and fresh with dried flowers, sweet tobacco and hints of straw. Red fruit, cloves and green peppercorns. Medium-to full-bodied with fine tannins that are very fresh and refined. Fine, silky and beautiful. Hints of minerals and granite to the dark fruit. Such gorgeous length and beauty. 64% carmenere, 18% merlot. Extremely long and poised. Cooler wine. From biodynamically grown grapes. Delicious to drink already, but another three to four years will make it even better.

98 points, James Suckling (Jun 2021)

There is a lot of Carmenere character on the nose of the 2018 Clos Apalta, which was produced with 64% Carmenere, 18% Cabernet Sauvignon and 18% Merlot, a blend that is similar to the one used in 2016. The wine is not shy at all and hits the scale at 15% alcohol. It's showy, heady, hedonistic, aromatic, full-bodied and lush with abundant velvety tannins and a long and powerful finish where the notes of black peppercorns and tea and tobacco leaves dominate. This might not be a wine for everybody, but fans of the style will love it. 92,748 bottles produced. It was bottled in October 2020.

Emilio Lustau VORS 30yr Amontillado Sherry (500ml)
Sherry from Jerez, Spain

The NV Amontillado VORS is a huge step up in quality and complexity from the rest of Amontillados. Bright brown color, extremely saline in the palate, sharp as a knife. One has to wonder if in the past the origin of this wine could have been Manzanilla rather than Fino. It is clean with a complex nose of curry, old wood, wax, antique shop and shoe polish as well as an extremely concentrated palate. Drink 2013-2021.

2016 Bartolo Mascarello Barolo (750ml)
Nebbiolo from Barolo, Piedmont, Italy

100WA

This is the stuff of dreams. Tasted so young, I did a lot of coaxing to nudge the wine along, thanks to a double decant and a few extra hours in an open bottle. I tasted both samples I had over the course of a few weeks. Those efforts served well, but the wine remains packed tight and full of nervous energy regardless, indicating that its true potential won't be seen for another 10 or 20 years, or likely more. The Bartolo Mascarello 2016 Barolo is a true icon of the vintage. The approach is elongated and silky, like lifting honey from a jar. The aromas are chiseled and focused with wild berry, licorice, candied orange peel, campfire ash, rusted iron, crushed graphite and pencil shaving. The wine's personality is downplayed, elegant and demure in one tasting but exuberant and expressive in the next. The tannins show snap and crunch, indicating they will drive the wine forward over many years of cellar age. This is one of those rare wines that is poised to improve with each increment of time. Structurally, it is perfect. If we were to create a template for an aspirational Barolo, this would be it.

2013 Romano Dal Forno (750ml)
Corvina from Amarone, Veneto, Italy

98WA 97JS

The 2013 Amarone della Valpolicella Monte Lodoletta is my favorite wine in the retrospective, along with the amazing 2011, 2009 and 1996 vintages. This wine was released at the beginning of this year, and because Dal Forno skipped over the 2014 vintage, this is the only Amarone we will see for a while (until the highly anticipated 2015 is released). The 2013 vintage is characterized by a slightly more streamlined mouthfeel (which isn't saying much given the baseline enormity of these wines) with carefully etched aromas of black cherry, rum cake, dark chocolate and toasted espresso. The 2013 vintage was balanced overall without the sudden heat waves we saw in the summers of 2011 and 2012. The grapes finished a slow and steady ripening process over an extended growing season. The effect is graceful and focused. Put this bottle aside in your cellar for the decades to come.

98 points, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate (Issue # Interim - Sep 2019)

Absurdly intense on the nose, saturated in dark-plum essence, vanilla, tar, ash, mocha and light raisins. Somehow, this still manages to be fresh and elegant — that’s thanks in part to the fine nature of the tannins, which on the surface seem brash and burly. Full-bodied and very, very long, casting dark fruit deep and ingrained. A stunning blockbuster of a wine that will either thrill or disturb. Drink from 2025.

2016 Forts de Latour (750ml)
Cabernet Sauvignon from Pauillac, Bordeaux, France

96JS 95WA 95JD 95V 95WI 94WS

The fresh currant and violet aromas are so complex and beautiful on the nose. Full body, ultra-refined tannins and lovely tannin tension. Shows focus and such finesse. Beautiful finish. Try after 2024.

96 points, James Suckling (Feb 2019)

The 2016 Les Forts de Latour is superb, unwinding in the glass with notions of blackcurrants, wild berries, sweet loamy soil, cigar wrapper and English walnuts. Medium to full-bodied, deep and layered, it’s concentrated and tightly wound, with superb depth at the core, lively acids and ripe, powdery tannins. This is an impeccably balanced, utterly classical Forts de Latour worth a special effort to seek out.

95 points, William Kelley, Wine Advocate (Mar 2022)

The winner of the best second wine in the vintage goes to Château Latour. Their 2016 Les Forts de Latour is a match for just about anything out there. It shares its bigger siblings stature and class, with a sensational perfume of cedarwood, black currants, graphite, and lead pencil. Seamless, ultra-pure, and medium to full-bodied, it too needs a good 5-7 years of bottle age and will keep for 2-3 decades.

95 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Feb 2019)

The 2016 Les Forts de Latour has a gorgeous bouquet, extremely pure and floral, veins of blue fruit, cassis permeating the blackberry fruit. The palate is beautifully balanced, again, very saline and a little spicier than I expected. There is a veneer of black fruit that makes it seem quite approachable, yet the tannins and backbone are there behind it. This is a superb Les Forts de Latour. Frédéric Engerer opined that it will drink in two or three years, though its substance and complexity suggests that those with the wherewithal to cellar this Les Fort will be amply rewarded.

95 points, Neal Martin, Vinous (Mar 2022)

Very iron fist in a velvet glove,” commented winemaker Hélène Genin of the 2016 Les Forts de Latour. “It has a lot of power but also beauty and precision.” She’s not wrong. Deep garnet-purple in color, exuberant scents of kirsch, blueberry preserves, black currant pastilles, and star anise come bounding out of the glass, followed by aromatic nuances of cumin seed, candied violets, fragrant earth, and dark chocolate. The medium-bodied palate delivers irresistible grace and tension, with a solid backbone of super-ripe, velvety tannins lending a taut structure to the mighty black fruit layers, finishing very long and mineral-tinged. With a vigorous decant, it makes for an impactful experience right now. However, just another 3-4 more years in the cellar will yield impressive dividends on your investment, given that it is still holding back slightly. Expect to cellar this for a good 20-25 years+. The blend is 64.3% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35.3% Merlot, and 0.4% Cabernet Franc, sporting alcohol of 13.5%.

A bit fleshier and more caressing than a typical Pauillac, this has flavors of warm fig, currant and blackberry preserves inlaid with charcoal and smoldering tobacco notes. There's grip for sure and a twinge of warm cast iron on the finish, but the fruit detail keeps the upper hand throughout, showcasing the purity on the finish. Very, very solid. Best from 2023 through 2035.

2018 Georges Vernay Les Chaillees de l'Enfer (750ml)
Viognier from Condrieu, Rhône, France

Domaine Georges Vernay, founded by Francis Vernay in 1937, is a third-generation, venerable wine producer, located in the heart of Condrieu, France. The efforts of Francis Vernay were instrumental in the creation of the official Condrieu appellation in 1940. In later years, Francis was succeeded by his son Georges, who played a key role in restricting the geographical boundaries of Condrieu, preserving the character of the appellation and ensuring its future greatness. In 1996, Christine Vernay, Georges' daughter, took over as winemaker and General Manager of the Estate. Recognized as one of the great winemakers in France, several of her wines have recently been awarded the coveted 100 points in the world’s top wine publications; remarkable - since the 2011 vintage, not a score below 96 from Jeb Dunnuck for the Coteau de Vernon. Among the top two or three Condrieu in any vintage, the Coteau de Vernon comes from very old vines planted in 1936 and 1960, on the steep granite slopes just behind the Vernay estate.

From vines just next to the Coteau Vernon, the Condrieu Les Chaillées de L'Enfer is year-in, year-out one of the top examples from this appellation. The 2018 Condrieu Les Chaillées De L'Enfer reveals a light gold color as well as a gorgeous bouquet of ripe stone fruits, honeyed nectarines, and apricots intermixed with notions of white flowers, white chocolate, and truffly earth. Possessing an incredible sense of salty minerality, medium to full-bodied richness, flawless balance, and a great finish, it strikes a beautiful balance between richness and freshness and stays light on its feet and elegant. I'd drink bottles over the coming 4-6 years, but it will evolve for longer.

Bright and nicely detailed, with a mix of green almond, white peach, honeysuckle and mango notes, backed by a subtle bitter orange thread on the finish. The rich and showy side of this white is balanced by its inner purity. Drink now through 2024. 650 cases made, 35 cases imported.

2019 Domaine de Montille Les Taillepieds 1er Cru (750ml)
Pinot Noir from Volnay, Burgundy, France
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

Boasting fresh, lively fruit and balanced acidity, these spectacular 2019 Domaine de Montille Burgundies come from a vintage that "hit the bullseye" according to critic James Suckling, offering a "rare combination of excellence and great consistency." Benefiting from our long-standing relationship with the Domaine, this part two of our exclusive Domaine de Montille offering features Burgundies from the estate's vineyards heading south from Volnay through the Cote d'Or to Saint Aubin, ranging from a value-packed entry level Red Burgundy to a vast array of exquisite Premier and Grand Cru Whites, all exceptional wines offering outstanding value, many offered in large format perfect for cellaring.

Now considered a pioneer in the region for being among the first to estate bottle his wines and craft ageworthy Burgundy with a sense of place, Hubert de Montille took over his family's estate at the age of 17 in 1947 after it had dwindled to only 2.5 hectares and set about rebuilding the domaine's holdings while establishing a stellar reputation. Taking the reins after his father's 50-year tenure, Hubert's son Etienne was among the first in the region to convert to organic and then biodynamic practices, while continuing to expand the estate with the acquisition of some of Burgundy's most highly regarded vineyards, including those of Chateau de Puligny-Montrachet in 2012. Now with 35 hectares of holdings spanning an astounding 20 separate top appellations throughout the region, Domaine de Montille's top Chardonnay parcels south of Volnay include Puligny Folatières, a premier cru with two prestigious neighbors, Leflaive and Leroy, the rock-covered Meursault Poruzots next to the famous "Les Genevrières" vineyard and Saint Aubin En Remilly, located just behind the revered Grand Cru Le Montrachet. Crediting the influence of his brother-in-law, the masterful Meursault winemaker Jean Marc Roulot, Etienne employs a restrained use of new oak for the whites depending on the specific plots, aging for up to a year on the lees and preserving the acidic backbone while crafting complex, balanced wines that will evolve over decades.

From the exceptional 2019 Bourgogne Blanc "Clos du Chateau," boasting the rich profile of Puligny Montrachet at a fraction of the price, to the magnificent 2019 Chevalier Montrachet Grand Cru, an ultimate expression of refined, long-lived Chardonnay from a tiny .23 hectare parcel, and including one Red Burgundy, the bright and energetic 2019 Bourgogne Rouge, these selections from Domaine de Montille rank among the top in the region, superbly expressing each terroir with alluring freshness and elegant length. Produced in a vintage with significantly lower yields guaranteeing excess demand, now is the time to secure your allocation of these magnificent 2019 Burgundies today and look forward to enjoying them for years to come.

Aromas of peonies, plums, red berries, potpourri, warm spices and orange rind introduce de Montille's 2019 Volnay 1er Cru Les Taillepieds, a medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy wine that's deep and concentrated, with lively acids and supple tannins that assert themselves gently on the finish. As usual, this will require some patience.

2016 Olivier Riviere Pozo Alto (750ml)
Graciano from Rioja, Spain

97WA 97JD 97JS 95V

I was really looking forward to the 2016 Pozo Alto and to visiting the vineyard, which is surprisingly old and large (where he selects the best part for this bottling) and planted with enough space to work with a tractor, as the family that planted it in the 1930s already had a tractor. It combines power and elegance in a rare combination. It feels young and a little closed, and it's serious. Olivier Rivière considers 2016 a year for aging in bottle, as it's a year with high acidity, plenty of tannins and some austere profiles. It fermented destemmed with an unusual blend of 75% Graciano, 20% Tempranillo and some 5% Garnacha. It has a sharp palate, with volume, very fine tannins and great length. It has both modern and classical features, taking the best from both worlds. This is a serious Rioja for the long run. There are 1,800 bottles of this and some large formats.

97 points, Luis Gutiérrez, Wine Advocate (Issue # 243 - Jun 2019)

I was blown away by the 2016 Pozo Alto, unquestionably one of the finest examples of Graciano I’ve ever tasted. The blend is the standard co-fermented 75% Graciano, 20% Tempranillo, and 5% Garnacha, from vines planted in the 1930s, that was completely destemmed and spent 18 months in demi-muids. This deep purple color Rioja boasts stunning notes of blue fruits, violets, orange blossom, and graphite. This flows to a medium to full-bodied, sensationally perfumed, intense 2016 that has flawless integration in its acidity and tannins, a great mid-palate, and a great, great finish. It’s a brilliant effort to enjoy over the coming 15 years or more.

97 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Apr 2019)

Quite savory, stony aromas with ripe plum paste, black olives and black cherries. The palate has smooth, ripe and deep-set tannins that carry a very fresh, gently peppery edge and deliver dark-plum and black-cherry flavors. Really impressive structure and detail. Drink now or hold.

97 points, James Suckling (Dec 2018)

Bright ruby color. An expansive, seductively perfumed bouquet evokes fresh red and blue fruits, potpourri, spicecake and incense, with an intense mineral overtone building in the glass. Concentrated yet vibrant in character, showing superb delineation and floral lift to its sweet raspberry, blueberry, cola and rose pastille flavors. Becomes deeper and spicier on the gently tannic finish while maintaining urgency and finishes with outstanding clarity and tenacity.

The nose is very and unevolved in first minutes; only minimal stimulation brought about by aeration in the forms of faint pear and wood scents. Far better in the mouth, as focused tastes of ripe grapes, old oak resin and candied nuts greet the taste buds; midpalate shows a bit of fire along with fruit, wood and spirit. The 2016 Bel-Air Jean & Gabriel is deep, rich and super-expressive. Super-ripe black cherry, plum, lavender, menthol and licorice all flesh out in this deep, succulent wine. 2015 Penfolds Grange (750ml)
Syrah from South Australia, Australia
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

Counted among a handful of iconic wines instantly recognizable by a single word, pioneering Penfolds winemaker Max Schubert began his secretive experiment in the 1950’s to craft a highly distinctive Shiraz blending grapes from across South Australia’s best vineyards with techniques considered unconventional at the time, initially calling it Grange Hermitage and eventually changing it simply to “Grange." Described as “unquestionably Australia’s benchmark wine” by Vinous critic Josh Raynolds, this selection of highly rated Penfolds Grange vintages available in a range of formats is being offered at special, one-time pricing that Aussie Shiraz fans and collectors of the world’s best wines will want to secure without hesitation.

Among the first to establish vineyards in South Australia’s Adelaide, Dr. Christopher Penfold and his wife Mary established Penfolds in 1844, naming their stone cottage situated among the vines The Grange and eventually growing to become one of the country’s largest wine producers. Now celebrating the 70th anniversary of its first release, continuity has played a big part in the overwhelming success of Penfolds Grange, with only three other winemakers after Schubert crafting its signature style. As Chief Winemaker for Penfolds since 1989, Peter Gago has carried on the Grange tradition of blending mainly Shiraz and usually (although not always as in 2017) a small percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon from multiple vineyards across multiple regions, a practice which minimizes the impact of vintage variations, and ages Grange in large casks of 100% new American oak with nearly four more years in the bottle, yielding elegant spiced dark fruit balanced with precise acidity and velvety, forceful tannins ensuring decades of evolution. Described as “a massive wine” by the Wine Spectator’s Harvey Steiman, the 97 pt. 1995 Penfolds Grange has enjoyed over two decades of impeccable aging and is ready to enjoy, “majestic in its proportions, combining power and grace in equal measure” with a finish that “echoes all day and night.” Available in magnums, the 99 pt. 2012 Penfolds Grange is “unquestionably a stonking great Grange!” according to the Wine Advocate’s Lisa Perrotti-Brown with a finish that’s “epically long.” Declaring the 100 pt. 2014 Grange “doesn’t disappoint,” Jeb Dunnuck describes it as “unquestionably the reference point wine for Australia,” while calling the 100 pt. 2015 Grange “a monster of wine and one of those rare wines that blends power and elegance perfectly.” Described by the Wine Spectator’s MaryAnn Worobiec as “memorable, complex, aromatic and explosively deep,” the 98 pt. 2017 Penfolds Grange is both elegant and muscular boasting “a stature and presence possessed only by Grange” according to Aussie expert Tyson Stelzer of the Halliday Wine Companion, only the seventh Grange ever made with 100% Shiraz.

Described as “Shiraz at its finest” by Inside Bordeaux’s Jane Anson, the mythical and highly collectible Penfolds Grange sets the standard for Australian Shiraz, these selections all top-rated vintages guaranteeing enjoyment for decades and certain to be a focal point in any collector’s cellar.

Much anticipated vintage for Grange and it is a powerhouse of concentration and complexity. Aromas of orange and lemon peel to start, then graphite, blackberries, plum paste, black cherries, boundless sweet oak spice, fresh cedar, tar, mahogany, roasted coffee and chocolate - the list goes on. Such complexity. Classic Grange, offering such deep, dark intensity. The palate has immense richness and depth with a super succulent and very long, fleshy, deeply weighted array of dense, velvet-wrapped tannins that run so long. The fruit flavors sit in the blackberry, blood-plum and blueberry zone with succulent, long and assertive structure, carrying through in an utterly seamless mode. The finish is tightly wrenched, in spectacularly powerful style, locking this wine in for a very long haul. Best from 2030.

100 points, James Suckling (Nov 2019)

The flagship 2015 Grange is a monster of wine and one of those rare wines that blends power and elegance perfectly. Revealing a saturated purple color, it’s seemingly more forward and seductive than past great vintages, which I suspect is due to the incredible purity of fruit as well as the wine’s flawless balance than any change in winemaking or stylistic shifts. I also think the acidity is healthy, and the 2015 tips the scales at 14.5% alcohol, which is certainly in the sweet spot, if not tame, for beautifully ripe Syrah these days. A blend of 98% Shiraz and 2% Cabernet Sauvignon that spent 20 months in new American oak hogsheads, it offers an extraordinary perfume of sweet crème de cassis, lead pencil shavings, camphor, Asian spices, licorice, and wildflowers. This is followed by a full-bodied, powerful yet incredibly seamless and elegant Shiraz that has no hard edges, a big, dense mid-palate, ripe tannins, and a great finish. Coming close to rivaling the 1986, which has always been a benchmark vintage of Grange for me, the 2015 offers a more polished, elegant, approachable style. Vintage comparisons aside, this is a legendary example of Grange in the making. The savvy wine lovers out there will give this 7-8 years of bottle age (I’ll probably be out of bottles by then) and enjoy over the following 2-3 decades.

99 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Nov 2019)

Bang. The first whiff cries Grange. A lifted, fragrant, harmonious blend of fruit, oak (American, of course) and finely pitched tannins. Faultless. It's all relative, but this is starting to relax its grip. And the length is very, very special.

99 points, James Halliday, Halliday Wine Companion (Sep 2019)

The nose of the 2015 Grange features the wine's characteristic lifted aromas, joined by pronounced American oak influence and bold blackberry fruit, plus hints of red meat, raspberries, asphalt and vanilla. It's dense and concentrated on the palate, full-bodied yet balanced and firm, with a rich, velvety texture and long, plush finish. Don't expect great complexity at this stage—it's much too young to show much more than the primary fruit and oak elements—but this is a Grange that should easily go three or four decades.

2010 Chateau Lascombes (1.5L)

"The 2016 Château Lascombes is another brilliant Margaux, and I was blown away by this wine... while I’d happily enjoy bottles today, it’s going to keep for 25-30 years."
–Jeb Dunnuck

Crafted by the renowned Second Growth estate in an excellent vintage, the opulent 95pt 2016 Chateau Lascombes offers lush dark fruit with hints of smoky graphite and structured, ripe tannins, described as "really stunning" by critic James Suckling and offering incomparable value, conveyed ex-Chateau.

Established in the center of the Margaux plateau, the stately ivy-covered 19th century Chateau Lascombes was brought back to its original grandeur in the 1950s under the direction of renowned wine writer and entrepreneur Alexis Lichine, who raised the quality of the estate's wine exponentially over his two decades of ownership. Planted to 50% Merlot, 45% Cabernet Sauvignon with 5% Petit Verdot, Lascombes' 120 hectares of vineyards are the largest holding in the Margaux AOC, divided into three distinct blocks based on their diverse soils of clay, gravel and limestone. Formerly the technical manager of Chateau Lafite Rothschild, Duhart-Milon and Château l'Evangile before taking the reins at Lascombes in 2001, winemaker Dominique Befve presided over the most recent modernization of the estate, remapping and restructuring the vineyards, constructing new cellars and employing stricter selection for the Grand Vin under the advisement of renowned winemaking consultant Michel Rolland. Aged in 80% new French oak barrels for 18 months, the full-bodied 95pt 2016 Chateau Lascombes boasts layers of luscious dark fruit, minerality and impressive length with "a terrific sense of elegance and purity" according to critic Jeb Dunnuck, already incredibly drinkable.

Offered at a fraction of the price of nearby Chateaux Margaux and Palmer from an outstanding vintage, the 2016 Chateau Lascombes strikes the balance between richness and elegance, giving "full rein to the classy image of Margaux as the center of delicacy and precision in the Médoc" according to Bordeaux expert Jane Anson, conveyed in pristine provenance in cellar-ready original wooden cases and promising years of enjoyment.

96WA 94JS

The wine hits all cylinders in 2010. The average alcohol for the bottled wine is 14%. It has a gorgeously sweet nose of creme de cassis, spring flowers, subtle barbecue smoke and charcoal followed by full body, beautiful intensity, great purity, stature and length. The influence of any oak is minimal, despite the fact that 90% new French oak was used. Needless to say, this is an example of modern-styled winemaking at it’s finest, and arguments that such wines will not age well, do not represent their terroir , and are soul-less, are totally groundless. Give it 5 or so years of cellaring and drink it over the following 25-30 years. This is one of the great Margaux wines of the vintage.

Even better than I thought it would be from barrel, this 15,000-bottle cuvee of equal parts Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot made by the partner of Jean-Luc Thunevin, Murielle Thunevin, is sensational. Classic Margaux notes of spring flowers, black currant and licorice as well as hints of blueberry pie, lead pencil shavings and camphor jump from the glass of this full-bodied, dense, moderately tannic yet exceptionally well-endowed effort. 2018 Belargus Anjou Treilles Blanc (750ml)
Chenin Blanc from Anjou, Loire, France
B-21 Top Recommendation

A not to be missed selection of top-rated Chenin Blancs from the Loire Valley’s newest rockstar producer, this stellar lineup of exquisite wines from Domaine Belargus is “a must investment for all fans of Chenin Blanc” and equally appealing to those who enjoy “the very great white wines of this world” according to the Wine Advocate’s Stephen Reinhardt, produced in limited quantities and available while they last.

Established in 2018 by Ivan Massonnat, Domaine Belargus is founded on the groundwork of Anjou legend Jo Pithon, among the first to shift focus to vineyard specific Chenin Blanc in the late 1980’s and responsible for the revitalization of the dramatic Coteau des Treilles, a steep, terraced vineyard referred to as the Cote Rotie of the Layon Valley. Originally known for sweet wines but also producing dry Chenins since the late 20th century, the Anjou Noir region boasts a mosaic of complex mineral and volcanic soils perfect for growing Chenin Blanc, with each of the Belargus cru’s expressing its unique origins, including premium parcels in the famed Quarts-de Chaume AOP, the only Grand Cru site in the entire Loire Valley. Leading off with the dry selections, the entry level 94 pt. 2018 Belargus Anjou Ronceray Blanc offers classic Chenin Blanc spiced fruit “all backed by finely beaded acidity” according to the Wine Spectator’s Aleks Zecevic while the powerful 97 pt. 2018 Belargus Anjou Treilles Blanc is a silky, seamlessly textured Chenin Blanc with a mineral tinged finish sourced from the famed 2.72-hectare Coteau des Treilles monopole, a beauty that “any serious wine lover should at least taste” according to critic Reinhardt. Sourced from vineyards along the Layon River, its humid air aiding in the late season development of botrytis, the 96 pt. 2018 Belargus Coteaux du Layon Moelleux Layon is a harmonious blend of polished fruit and honeyed texture, offering “great tension between acidity and sweetness” according to critic Zecevic with a “sensationally long” finish and delivering incredible value. Sourced from one of the three plots listed in the original declaration of the Grand Cru Quarts-de-Chaume appellation, the 96 pt. 2018 Belargus Quarts-de-Chaume Grand Cru Roueres is “rich yet finessed and elegant” according to critic Reinhardt, bottled in full size 750 ml. Described as “fabulous” and “irresistible,” the 99 pt. 2018 Belargus Quarts-de-Chaume Grand Cru Les Quarts pairs “richness and sweetness with crystalline finesse and elegance in an unrivaled way” according to Reinhardt, and the viscous and intensely concentrated 100 pt. 2018 Belargus Quarts-de-Chaume Grand Cru Ultra is “made for eternity,” and with only one barrel produced, a must for collectors of “the finest noble sweet wines,” poised to age for decades, both of these beauties offered in 375 ml. half bottles.

Offered in a range of styles and levels of complexity, these selections from Domaine Belargus highlight Chenin Blanc's chameleon-like ability to elegantly mirror its terroir when crafted by an exceptional producer. Sourced from an outstanding 2018 Loire Valley vintage, Chenin Blanc fans and anyone looking to explore the Loire’s best whites won’t want to miss this opportunity to enjoy these masterful Loire wines from Domaine Belargus, ideal for mixing a case at an astoundingly good price.

97WA 95WS

The south-facing 2.72-hectare monopole Coteau des Treilles in Rochefort was resuscitated at the end of the 1990s by Jo Pithon from Domaine Pithon, once famous for world-class noble sweet wines from the Coteaux du Layon. Abandoned after the war because of its 30% to 70% steep slopes, this south-facing hillside is based on "geological chaos," as Ivan Massonnat puts it. "The subsoils are made up of magmatic rocks, schists, pudding stone and ancient limestones. ... This plot is located in the heart of the Pont-Barré Natural Reserve, a heaven of biodiversity that has never known chemistry and is home to exceptional flora and fauna, observed as early as the 18th century by Angevin botanists." I remember well my first visit here 17 years ago when I was deeply impressed by the vineyard and Jo's initiative to bring this grand cru back on the map of the Loire's finest vineyards. I have always adored Jo's wines from this cru, but the Belargus 2018 Anjou Coteau des Treilles seems to top everything that I have known from here. Intensely golden-yellow in color, the wine opens with a pure, refined and elegant yet intense and flinty nose of perfectly ripe yet fine fruits that intermingle with the schistous terroir as well as pastry and lemon/orange-scented fruit aromas. Filigreed and intense on the refined and elegant palate, this is a full-bodied, dense, intense and tensioned yet highly finessed and elegant Chenin with elderflower and orange blossom flavors at this early stage and a delicate tannin structure. The wine is rich and intense but always stimulating, with great finesse and elegance as well as long and juicy, wonderfully concentrated fruit. Everything is in great harmony, and any serious wine lover should at least taste this beauty.

97 points, Stephan Reinhardt, Wine Advocate (Jul 2021)

Not a powerhouse, and a bit restrained at first, but with air, this opens up beautifully, allowing the notes of peach, ginger and yellow plum to emerge tied to a bony frame. The complexity makes this almost a philosophical drink, but a bright mineral note and the alluring, mouthwatering edge bring back the immediate enjoyment. Superlong and harmonious, but the slight crunch on the finish suggests this could benefit from more aging. Best from 2023 through 2035. 333 cases made.

2015 Vieux Chateau Certan (750ml)
Merlot from Pomerol, Bordeaux, France

100WA 100V 99JS 99WE

The 2015 Vieux Château Certan is a blend of 80% Merlot,, 19% Cabernet Franc and 1% Cabernet Sauvignon, cropped between September 17 and October 2 at 42 hectoliters per hectare. The IPT is healthy 83 and the pH is 3.72, the alcohol 14.6%. Enough statistics. What you need to know is that it is a beguiling Pomerol that will set hearts aflutter. It is bridled with a heavenly bouquet with intense red and black fruit, black truffle and a touch of smoke, opening wonderfully in the glass; the Cabernet Franc is very expressive and imparting a licorice note after ten minutes. The palate is medium-bodied with intensity, with a killer line of acidity that imparts freshness from the very start. There is life-affirming tension interwoven throughout this extremely complex wine from Alexandre and Guillaume Thienpont. There are layers, more like a mille-feuille of blackberry, boysenberry, mineral, truffle and a touch of spice towards the finish, just a touch of warmth from the alcohol that merely complements an extraordinary and profound Pomerol.

98-100 points, eRobertParker.com (Issue # 224 - Apr 2016)

One of the most exotic, flamboyant wines of the year, the 2015 Vieux Château Certan is rich, unctuous and seamless, with stunning depth and exceptional textural richness. In 2015, VCC is unusually deep and powerful. A host of rose petal, lavender, mint, spice and plum notes meld together, but it is the wine's overall intensity and spherical structure that stand out most. The 2015 is freakishly rich and likely to require at least 15 years to lose some of its baby fat. It was absolutely stellar on both occasions I tasted it.

A powerful and rich wine with super concentration and length. Deep and very rich. Glorious blackberry and black chocolate. Full and super velvety. A creamy texture of stone, chalk and lemon rind from the tannins and acidity. Wow. Loving it. The caressing character is so memorable. 80% merlot and 20% cabernet franc.

98-99 points, James Suckling (Apr 2016)

This is a beautifully fragrant wine that has power along with an elegant acidity. It has wonderful juiciness that cuts through any of the tannins to give great freshness, a silky texture and fruitiness at the end. Perfumed and stylish, this is a very fine wine.

2018 Idda Rosso (750ml)
Nerello Mascalese from Etna, Sicily, Italy

91WA

Offering spice, depth and good definition, the Idda 2018 Etna Rosso was born in a challenging vintage. Summer hailstorms damaged much of the yields and meant that fruit management was completed manually and with extra care, cluster by cluster, to make sure only the best bunches remained on the vines. That hard work paid off to produce a delicate, almost subdued expression from powerful Etna in which more attention is given to the soft fruit and berry nuances. The wine sports a fresh and fruit-forward style with streamlined fruit weight and an almost ethereal personality. Spice, tar and resin fill in the rear.

2010 Chateau La Conseillante (750ml)
Merlot from Pomerol, Bordeaux, France

98JS 97JD 97V 96WS

Beautiful nose with cocoa powder, exotic flowers, candied violets and loads of dark berries. Great aromatic complexity. Amazing texture on palate with a superb precision and silky tannins. So beautifully composed showing already great harmony. Difficult to wait! Better in 2018.

98 points, James Suckling (Feb 2013)

The 2010 La Conseillante is a tour de force that will rival the 2005, 2000 and 1990 at maturity. Just loaded with notions of blackcurrants, damp earth, tobacco leaf, violets and toasty oak, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, building, ripe tannin, and a huge finish. Sexy and opulent, yet also classy and elegant, it’s a sensational Pomerol that has another three decades of life ahead of it.

97+ points, Jeb Dunnuck (Nov 2017)

The 2010 La Conseillante has a magnificent bouquet with pixelated black fruit laced with cedar and pencil lead aromas. It is a penetrating and multi-faceted bouquet that just blossoms with aeration. The palate is supremely well balanced with filigree tannins and immense purity, very sustained and conveying immense energy on the finish. Surely the best La Conseillante under former winemaker Jean-Michel Laporte. Tasted from an ex-château bottle at the BI Wines & Spirits 10-Year On tasting.

97 points, Neal Martin, Vinous (Apr 2020)

Features substantial but very velvety structure running from start to finish, delivering a muscular feel for now. The hard edges are fully absorbed by the core of plum sauce, steeped blackberry and warm boysenberry reduction notes. The finish offers gorgeous tobacco and ganache accents lurking in the wings, along with flickers of anise and incense that should guide this version to increased elegance with age. Best from 2016 through 2034. 4,000 cases made, 800 cases imported.

Grenache from Chateauneuf-du-Pape, Rhône, France

Lastly, the 2017 Châteauneuf Du Pape L'Eperdu offers a touch of blue fruits as well as hints of ripe black cherries, ground pepper, melted licorice, violets, and spring flowers. Rich, full-bodied, with some subtle background oak, it's another exotic, singular, opulent wine from this estate that has loads to love. It too will keep for 10-15 years.
