Good Til Gone

Good til Gone? Yes. Well, it's pretty simple. The wine is good. Really good. But is has to go. And when it's gone, it's gone. Sometimes we just buy too darn much. With thousands of wines coming and going, there's lots going on around here. Wines are overlooked and sit idle, and need a nudge.

Browse through this list and check back as we’re sure to add to it. Nothing compromised. These aren't auction goods or close-outs where provenance is a question. It's all good. Prices progressively reduced monthly, so some serious bargains here. Best take a look sooner than later. Prices are good til gone.

2016 Gramercy Syrah Lagniappe Red Willow Vineyard (750ml)
Syrah from Columbia, Washington State

93WA 93V 92JD 91WE 91W&S

Initially shy on the nose, the 2016 Syrah Lagniappe first shows a dusty core of dark red and black fruit tones, then reveals cassis, black raspberry and blackcurrant aromas alongside subtle notes of dusty dried herbs, ground pepper and hints of smoked meat. Medium to full-bodied in the mouth, the wine leads with softened Syrah expressions and has a focused line of minerality through to the mid-palate, with good balance, softer, grainy tannins and structured acidity. It ends with red-fruit jus and mild black pepper tones on the finish. Only 573 cases made. If you are looking for a generous and robust style of Syrah, this delicate, elegant and mineral-driven bottling is not for you.

93+ points, Anthony Mueller, Wine Advocate (Issue # 246 - Dec 2019)

Bright ruby-red. Crushed blackberry, olive tapenade, peppery herbs, licorice and minerals on the perfumed nose. At once cool and densely packed, showing much more ripeness than the Forgotten Hills Syrah with no loss of energy. This is simply riper, more filled in and more expressive yet with lovely retention of peppery acidity and nothing roasted or tired about it. Complex, subtle, energetic and light on its feet, finishing savory and very long, with a suave but firm dusting of tannins that should carry this wine for another eight to ten years. A very captivating wine--as good as the 2015 but in a tighter style. (13.1% alcohol)

93 points, Stephen Tanzer, Vinous (Nov 2018)

The 2016 Syrah Lagniappe comes, as always, all from the Red Willow Vineyard and saw tons of stems and aging in neutral barrels. This deep ruby-colored effort has a beautiful perfume of black fruits, smoked earth, ground pepper, game, and crushed violets. Medium-bodied, silky and pure on the palate, with no hard edges, it's another wine from Gramercy that’s more lightweight and straightforward than normal, yet shines for its elegance, purity, and complexity. While it’s no doubt an impressive wine, it’s a solid step back from prior top vintages.

92 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Apr 2019)

In the first vintage of this wine to be designated Red Willow, the aromas announce themselves with notes of cranberry, hay, herb, black pepper, smoked meat and raspberry. A flavorful, dense, red fruit-filled palate follows.

91 points, Sean P. Sullivan, Wine Enthusiast (Oct 2019)

Like many syrahs from Red Willow Vineyard, this feels cool in its scents of bay laurel and cured meat, and reticent in its tense, firm flavors. The red fruit is lined with espresso-dark tannins, a structure that bodes well for a long cellar life.

2018 Clos Apalta (1.5L)
Carmenere from Apalta Vineyard, Colchagua Valley, Chile
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

Powerful, intense, concentrated and breathtaking – these are the words critics use again and again to describe the mighty Clos Apalta, a singular wine from over 100-year-old vines from world-class producer Casa Lapostolle. The legendary Carmenere-based Bordeaux style blend, first released in 1997, has gone on to garner the top praise of critics across the board, including three 100pt ratings in the last five vintages. Wine critic James Suckling summarizes it best, "There’s no doubt that Clos Apalta is one of the world’s greatest red wines." This release of the exceptional 2018 Clos Apalta is the opportunity to secure your allocation of this iconic wine, at the best price available anywhere for a limited time.

With a vision of producing a premium quality wine using a blend of French expertise and Chilean terroir, French Grand Marnier heiress Alexandra Marnier Lapostolle and her husband Cyril de Bournet tapped renowned French oenologist Michel Rolland to exclusively lead the winemaking team (Rolland was contractually prevented from working for any other Chilean winery), setting the now eponymous Chilean winery and its signature blend on the fast track to success. Sourced primarily from two blocks of old vine Carmenere and Cabernet Sauvignon dating to the 1920s planted on granitic soils, the unique microclimate created by the surrounding Cordillera (or Coastal Mountains) creates a shadow yielding less sunshine overall paired with frequent morning mist, optimal conditions for ripening Carmenere yet maintaining its freshness. Now under the direction of their son Charles-Henri de Bournet, the 2018 Clos Apalta exhibits the signature aromatics of spice, chocolate and roasted pepper, with plush dark plum fruit and juicy tannins, and rippling layers of complexity on the lingering finish. With past vintages named five times to the Wine Spectator Top 100 (including being the only South American wine ever to garner the coveted #1), the 2018 Clos Apalta indeed stands shoulder to shoulder with the world's greatest red wines.

98JS 96WA

So aromatic and fresh with dried flowers, sweet tobacco and hints of straw. Red fruit, cloves and green peppercorns. Medium-to full-bodied with fine tannins that are very fresh and refined. Fine, silky and beautiful. Hints of minerals and granite to the dark fruit. Such gorgeous length and beauty. 64% carmenere, 18% merlot. Extremely long and poised. Cooler wine. From biodynamically grown grapes. Delicious to drink already, but another three to four years will make it even better.

98 points, James Suckling (Jun 2021)

There is a lot of Carmenere character on the nose of the 2018 Clos Apalta, which was produced with 64% Carmenere, 18% Cabernet Sauvignon and 18% Merlot, a blend that is similar to the one used in 2016. The wine is not shy at all and hits the scale at 15% alcohol. It's showy, heady, hedonistic, aromatic, full-bodied and lush with abundant velvety tannins and a long and powerful finish where the notes of black peppercorns and tea and tobacco leaves dominate. This might not be a wine for everybody, but fans of the style will love it. 92,748 bottles produced. It was bottled in October 2020.

2017 Chateau Le Gay (750ml)
Merlot from Pomerol, Bordeaux, France

94JD 94WS 94JS

Showing beautifully in my tastings, the 2017 Chateau Le Gay makes the most of this solid vintage. Almost all Merlot from a great terroir on the plateau of Pomerol, it reveals a purple/ruby hue as well as medium to full-bodied notes of black cherry and cassis fruits, toasted spice, spring flowers, and damp earth. Shining more for its complexity and elegance than sheer power, it nevertheless has wonderful fruit, plenty of tannins, and a great finish. Give bottles 4-5 years of bottle age and enjoy over the following 15-20 years.

94 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Feb 2020)

A whiff of mocha curls around the plum, blackberry and boysenberry compote flavors, while ganache, roasted apple wood and graphite details course through the finish. Shows lots of range and depth. Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Best from 2022 through 2038. 1,083 cases made.

94 points, James Molesworth, Wine Spectator (Mar 2020)

1999 La Mondotte (750ml)
Merlot from Saint-Emilion, Bordeaux, France

94WA

1999 La Mondotte (St. Emilion): Along with the 1997, the 1999 is the most forward and accessible La Mondotte yet produced. Its opaque purple color is followed by a glorious nose of candied black fruits, graphite, licorice, and underbrush. It is full-bodied and sumptuous, possessing amazing extract and richness for the vintage. Its high tannin is hidden by a wealth of glycerin, fruit, and extract. Moreover, the finish lasts for 35-45 seconds. This is an amazing achievement in 1999. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2020.

2017 Sottimano Cotta (750ml)
Nebbiolo from Barbaresco, Piedmont, Italy

95WE 94WA 93V 93W&S

Blue flower, rose, camphor and baking spice aromas waft out of the glass. Juicy and delicious, the polished palate doles out juicy Marasca cherry, crushed raspberry and star anise alongside taut, fine-grained tannins. Drink 2022–2029.

95 points, Kerin O'Keefe, Wine Enthusiast (Oct 2020)

Drawing its fruit from a 2.8-hectare section of the Cottà cru in Neive with 50- to 60-year-old vines, this is a classic offering from Sottimano. The 2017 Barbaresco Cottá unfolds to beautiful intensity and depth. The Neive area suffered hail damage on April 15th, and we are lucky that this parcel was spared, enough so to render a 9,000-bottle release. This estate believes in long maceration times (the wine stays on the skins for up to 40 days) with no selected yeasts. Malolactic fermentation is allowed to happen at its own pace in French barrel, and the wine ages up to 24 months, with lees contact for about half that time. The approach is traditional and straightforward, resulting in a wine that is focused, detailed and polished with bright cherry fruit, licorice and campfire ash. I love the intensity you get here.

94 points, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate (Jul 2020)

The 2017 Barbaresco Cottà is punchy, with terrific freshness and verve. Red toned fruit, flowers, mint and bright acids yield a decidedly delicate expression of Cottà, a Neive vineyard where the wines tend to be quite a bit bigger and richer. The 2017 needs at least a few years in bottle to soften. It is an attractive wine if enjoyed on its own terms, but is also quite different stylistically from the wines Sottimano has made here in the past.

93 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Nov 2019)

This wine’s flavors of dark cherry and spice are penetrating, deepend by earthier notes of tobacco and forest floor. The fruit comes from 50- to 70-year-old vines in this Neive cru, and, like all of Sottimano’s Barbarescos, is fermented with ambient yeasts and bottled without filtering.

2017 Hyde Estate Pinot Noir Larry Hyde (750ml)
Pinot Noir from Carneros, California

94JD 94WE 93WA 93JS

Moving to the reds, the 2017 Pinot Noir Larry Hyde Vineyard offers terrific cherry and mulberry fruits as well as notes of spice, forest floor, and subtle marine-like saltiness. It's medium-bodied and balanced, with a wonderful texture and a great finish.

94 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Jan 2020)

Toasted oak and turned earth aromas are swept clean by vibrant red cherry and ripe strawberry flavors in this full-bodied, rather broad-textured wine. Made by the Larry Hyde family from its famous vineyard-designate property, it has mouthcoating richness, moderate tannins and great concentration to bring a lingering finish.

94 points, Jim Gordon, Wine Enthusiast (Dec 2020)

The 2017 Pinot Noir Larry Hyde has a medium ruby-purple color, wafting out of the glass with fragrant scents of raspberry preserves, Morello cherries and cranberry sauce with suggestions rose oil, cinnamon stick and cloves plus a waft of underbrush. The medium-bodied palate is wonderfully elegant and refreshing, featuring silken tannins and a quiet intensity of red fruit preserves, finishing long and perfumed.

93 points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate (Issue # 251 - Oct 2020)

2016 Abreu Cappella Proprietary Red (750ml)
Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa, California

99JS 98V 97JD 97WS

Aromas of blackberries, graphite, and lead pencil. Fresh and dried flowers and iron shavings. Full bodied, layered, tight and solid. Beautiful and very poised and thoughtful. Hints of fresh herbs, from lavender to lemon grass. Compressed. Great length and focus. Drink after 2022.

99 points, James Suckling (May 2019)

The 2016 Cappella is delicate, elegant and super-refined. Bright floral and spice notes perk up a core of red cherry and plum fruit in a fine, silky wine that speaks to pure refinement. A wine of total grace and finesse, Cappella is absolutely gorgeous in 2016. It is also one of the most polished and nuanced wines I have ever tasted here.

98 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Jan 2020)

The 2016s from Brad Grimes are all incredible wines that show the purity and balance of the vintage as well as the power and depth the Grimms always seems to find. Starting with the 2016 Cappella, it’s a more Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated blend and comes from a tiny vineyard just west of St. Helena. It has a deep ruby/plum color as well as a powerful bouquet of blackcurrants, caramelized meats, spice box, and chocolaty herbs. This full-bodied, deep, concentrated 2016 just glides over the palate with no sensation of weight or heaviness. It has the vintage’s more supple, seamless style and already offers pleasure. Nevertheless, it’s going to keep for 20-30 years.

97 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Jan 2020)

Dark and very reserved up front, with an espresso cream frame holding a dense core of steeped fig and black currant paste flavors in check for now. Slowly reveals roasted alder and smoldering tobacco notes at the end while the fruit gains steam, driving the finish. The power is obvious, but there’s a sneaky seductiveness too. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Best from 2023 through 2040. 277 cases made.

2017 Domaine Comte Armand Pommard 1er Cru Clos des Epeneaux (750ml)
Pinot Noir from Pommard, Burgundy, France

94WA 94V

The 2017 Pommard 1er Cru Clos des Epeneaux has gained in depth and dimension with élevage and showed very well from bottle, unfurling in the glass with an expressive, youthfully fruit-driven bouquet of raspberries, cherries, candied peel and rose petals, framed by a subtle touch of new oak. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, velvety and fleshy, with succulent acids and elegant tannins. While this isn't as rich, muscular or gourmand as the 2018, it's an immensely seductive wine that will drink well comparatively young—though readers should still plan on exercising at least a decade's patience.

94 points, William Kelley, Wine Advocate (Feb 2020)

The 2017 Pommard Clos des Epeneaux 1er Cru has a wonderful bouquet that fulfills its potential from barrel, offering immediately seductive brambly red fruit, crushed minerals and pressed rose petals. The 25–30% new oak is so neatly folded into the fruit that it is barely noticeable. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin and quite citrus-driven, revealing orange peel and blood orange notes. Linear at first and then gently fans out and gains depth toward the persistent finish. Superb.

2018 Georges Vernay Coteau de Vernon (1.5L)
Viognier from Condrieu, Rhône, France
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

Domaine Georges Vernay, founded by Francis Vernay in 1937, is a third-generation, venerable wine producer, located in the heart of Condrieu, France. The efforts of Francis Vernay were instrumental in the creation of the official Condrieu appellation in 1940. In later years, Francis was succeeded by his son Georges, who played a key role in restricting the geographical boundaries of Condrieu, preserving the character of the appellation and ensuring its future greatness. In 1996, Christine Vernay, Georges' daughter, took over as winemaker and General Manager of the Estate. Recognized as one of the great winemakers in France, several of her wines have recently been awarded the coveted 100 points in the world’s top wine publications; remarkable - since the 2011 vintage, not a score below 96 from Jeb Dunnuck for the Coteau de Vernon. Among the top two or three Condrieu in any vintage, the Coteau de Vernon comes from very old vines planted in 1936 and 1960, on the steep granite slopes just behind the Vernay estate.

98JD 97WS 96V

The 2018 Condrieu Coteau De Vernon is more backward and mineral-laced compared to the showier Les Chaillées De L'Enfer. Gorgeous notes of white flowers, honeyed citrus, nectarines, gunflint, and charcoal all emerge from this incredible wine. Taking plenty of air to show at its best (I followed this for multiple days), it's medium to full-bodied and has a flawlessly balanced mouthfeel, beautiful acidity, and a gorgeous finish. This is one of those wines that demands something from the taster and is subtle, nuanced, and beautifully complex while remaining regal and classy. The Romanée-Conti of Condrieu, I would give bottles another year and drink through 2026. It can be cellared longer, if that's your style.

98 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Nov 2020)

Plump and showy up front, with apricot, peach and mango flavors taking the lead, back by a warmed brioche note on the finish. This has depth and weight, but stays lively, with a flash of green tea and buried minerality showing at the very end to keep it honest. Hard to lay off now, but this has the density to cellar a bit as well. Drink now through 2027. 580 cases made, 35 cases imported.

97 points, James Molesworth, Wine Spectator (Nov 2020)

Brilliant straw. Highly perfumed, mineral-driven orchard and pit fruit scents, along with hints of saffron, violet, candied orange zest and honey. Sappy and seamless on the palate, offering deeply concentrated peach and pear nectar, lemon curd and candied ginger flavors underscored by a vein of dusty minerality. Finishes extremely long and smooth, with lingering floral character and an emphatic whiplash of smoky minerals.

2012 Brigaldara Amarone della Valpolicella Case Vecie (1.5L)
Corvina from Amarone, Veneto, Italy

94WA 92WS

The Brigaldara 2012 Amarone della Valpolicella Case Vecie (a traditional blend of 55% Corvina, 25% Corvinone and 20% Rondinella) comes from a warm vintage that saw hot, drying winds for most of the summer season. Those scorching weather conditions have further contributed to the richness and concentration of the fruit you get here. After harvest, the grapes are laid out to dry for 120 days, and during that process, they lose up to one-third of their water mass, tightening and further concentrating that distinctive richness. After the grapes are destemmed, pressed and fermented, the wine goes into French barrique for two years, followed by an additional two years to refine in large oak casks. Dried blackberry and plum segue to spice, smoke and tar. The wine is soft in terms of mouthfeel, with impressive textural richness. Some 15,000 bottles were released.

94 points, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate (Sep 2019)

Bright and elegant, this lightly fleshy, medium- to full-bodied red offers flavors of candied cherry and dried strawberry fruit, with accents of woodsy spice, dried thyme and black licorice. Delivers a long, supple finish. Drink now through 2027. 1,100 cases made, 300 cases imported.

The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon is blended of 82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot and was bottled in August 2018. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is jam-packed with vibrant black, blue and red fruits plus tons of spicy sparks, framed by wonderfully ripe, fine-grained tannins and beautiful freshness, finishing long and perfumed.

This is very tight and precise with dark berries, dark chocolate, spice and hints of hazelnuts. Full body and a solid center palate. Lots of sage, rosemary, and lavender. Beautiful balance. Fine finish. Very approachable now, but better after 2022.

97 points, James Suckling (Dec 2019)

Richly layered, with ripe and caressing cassis, plum preserves, boysenberry reduction and açaí berry fruit flavors. There's a chocolate backdrop and alluring toast notes throughout, with a subtle graphite edge on the very fine-grained finish to keep this red honest. A beautiful display of fruit and very Oakville in style. Drink now through 2035. 1,240 cases made.

2019 Bethel Heights Pinot Noir Justice Vineyard (1.5L)
Pinot Noir from Eola-Amity Hills, Oregon
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

Located on a hillside in the Eola-Amity Hills AVA at the east end of the Van Duzer Corridor, Bethel Heights was one of the first wineries established in the Willamette Valley, founded nearly 45 years ago by two couples considered pioneers of sustainability in Oregon winemaking. Today led by the families' second generations, these outstanding 2019 Bethel Heights Winery releases continue their legacy of producing exceptional cool climate Oregon Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, earning some of the best ratings of the vintage.

Starting with a 50-acre high-altitude parcel in an area considered less than optimal for farming, Bethel Heights first began by planting and cultivating Pinot Noir, building a reputation for their grapes' quality and releasing their first estate wine in 1984. After the discovery of widespread phylloxera in Willamette in the 1990s, the winery resisted pulling out all their vines, instead choosing to slow the progression by implementing organic viticultural practices to increase soil health while replacing the dying vines one by one as needed. Sourced from a mix of the surviving "legacy" old vines and newer phylloxera-resistant plantings that are now fully mature, the 2021 Bethel Heights Vineyards wines harken back to Willamette's historically cooler vintages, boasting elegant fruit and balanced acidity emblematic of classic Burgundian-style Oregon Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

The 2019 Pinot Noir Justice Vineyard comes from mostly Dijon clone vines planted in 1999. It has lovely scents of blood orange, blueberries, tea leaves and cinnamon. The palate offers finely detailed flavors and an abundance of silty tannins, finishing with fantastic length and layers.

96 points, Erin Brooks, Wine Advocate (Dec 2021)

Brilliant ruby. Expressive, mineral-tinged black raspberry, cherry cola and floral scents are complemented by a spicy nuance and a hint of succulent herbs. Well-concentrated and energetic, offering densely packed red and blue fruit liqueur, vanilla, candied rose and spicecake flavors braced by a spine of smoky minerality. Finishes extremely long and precise, displaying reverberating red berry and spice notes and slowly building tannins. 30% new French oak.

95 points, Josh Raynolds, Vinous (Feb 2022)

There’s real purity and focus to this with freshly sliced strawberry and fruit tea, as well as some perfume. Medium to full body with very racy tannins that are focused. Refined and beautiful. Drink or hold.

2018 Chappellet Cabernet Sauvignon Pritchard Hill (750ml)
Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa, California

98WA 98JD 96V 96JS

The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Pritchard Hill is composed of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Petit Verdot. It was aged in 100% new French oak for 22 months. The alcohol weighed in at 14.5%. Deep garnet-purple in color, it charges out of the gate with bold expressions of warm cassis, wild blueberries and black raspberries, plus hints of chocolate box, menthol, tapenade, smoked meats and pencil lead. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is bursting with vibrant black fruits, framed by fantastically ripe, fine-grained tannins and lovely freshness, finishing long and mineral laced.

98+ points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate (Nov 2020)

Always one of top wines in a vintage, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Pritchard Hill is another gorgeous wine with a more plush, supple texture that hides solid underlying structure and tannins. Beautiful notes of blueberries, new leather, camphor, violets, and smoked tobacco all flow to a full-bodied, seamless, gorgeously textured beauty that's very much in the style of the vintage. Possessing remarkable purity, flawless balance, and building tannins, give bottles 4-5 years of bottle age, count yourself lucky, and enjoy over the following 25+ years.

98 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Jan 2021)

The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Pritchard Hill is bright, punchy and structured. Blackberry jam, grilled herbs, lavender, menthol and crushed rocks all come alive in the glass. This searingly tannic, mountain Cabernet needs a good deal of time to open, but when it does, it dazzles. Bright floral notes, blood orange and slightly redder tonalities of fruit develop over time. The Pritchard Hill is a wine for readers who can be patient.

96+ points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Jan 2021)

Blue fruit with boysenberry and floral aromas. Cassis, too. It’s full-bodied, yet very tight and toned on the palate with fine tannins that are formed and polished. A classic wine. Give this three or four years to soften. Best after 2024.

2019 Realm Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard (750ml)
Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa, California

99WA 98JD 97V

Composed of 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard has a deep garnet-purple color, requiring a little coaxing before it spills out of the glass with fantastically showy blackberry preserves, boysenberries and cassis notes, plus hints of black raspberries, clove oil and potpourri, with a touch of tobacco leaf. The decadent, full-bodied palate sports a firm backbone of ripe, grainy tannins with beautiful freshness. All that generous black fruit melds seamlessly into a very long, mineral-laced finish.

99 points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate (Sep 2021)

The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon To Kalon Vineyard offers up a sweeter, sexier nose than the Dr. Crane release and is loaded with red and black currant fruits as well as flowery incense, unsmoked tobacco, chocolate, and exotic spices. Ultra-pure, ripe, as opulent as they come, and just heavenly juice any way you look at it, it can be enjoyed any time over the coming 20-25 years, probably longer.

98 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Dec 2021)

The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To-Kalon Vineyard captures so much of what makes the Realm wines so appealing. It is maybe just a bit pushed in terms of its ripeness profile, but not as heavy or unctuous as in some past years. Blueberry jam, creme de cassis, lavender, licorice, spice and gravel build as the 2019 opens in the glass. This heady, full-throttle Cabernet is sure to delight Realm fans.

Who says dry riesling is always tart? The effusive grapefruit and peachy nose, with hints of sesame and hibiscus, remains cool and subtle. Hard to resist this as it pulls you into the juicy and bright palate which feels a bit lighter than it actually is. Long, rather zesty finish with delicate minerality that makes you want more. A lovely, pure and lifted notion of ripe Amalfi lemon peel appears on the nose first and is followed by lovely notions of ripe Mirabelle plum. The palate again features those fruits: juicy Mirabelle flesh pervaded by lemon freshness and purity. The body is concentrated and juicy, vivid and fresh, full of energy and drive, precise with its alluring lemon zestiness. Drink 2025–2045.

2019 Vina Sena Sena (1.5L)
Cabernet Sauvignon from Aconcagua Valley, Chile
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

Eduardo Chadwick is one of the most important people of the vine in Chile – the world for that matter – facing multiple obstacles throughout his impressive career. For nearly a decade Eduardo worked to rebuild the iconic Viña Errázuriz, restoring his family's 19th century estate to its former glory. As Eduardo was gaining ground, California's most famous man of the vine paid the country a visit in 1990. Robert Mondavi fell in love with Chile and would soon be introduced to his counterpart in the region. By 1995, the two had reached a pioneering agreement – Seña was born. For four long, grueling years the two passionate visionaries toiled over vineyard sites in search of the perfect terroir for their dream wine. This was to be Chile's icon above all others. Site was paramount.

Located in the Valle de Aconcagua, on a 42 hectare colluvial vineyard of well drained gravel, rock and loam, the Seña vineyard is planted to the perfect mix of Cabernet Sauvignon, Carménère, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Malbec and Syrah. The slightly cooler temperatures of this elevated, sloping site allow for long, slow ripening. The Seña vineyard is often harvested two weeks after its nearest neighbor. Precious few wines in the country will compete; perhaps none – after all, perfection is incredibly rare.

This is a wine above all others ever bottled in Chile. A wine which is rightly described by Neal Martin as "The peripatetic wine that goes around the world challenging and, let it be said, often defeating First Growths in blind tastings."

98WA 98JS 96JA

The 2019 Seña was produced with a Bordeaux blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Malbec, 15% Carmenere and 4% Petit Verdot with the Chilean character of the high percentage of Carmenere. Most of the volume fermented in stainless steel with some 10% in concrete vats, and the final blend matured for 22 months in French oak barrels, 80% of them new, and 10% in Stockinger vats. It's 13.5% alcohol and has good acidity and freshness, coming through as medium-bodied, elegant and balanced. This is incredibly elegant, subtle and harmonious even at this early stage. It has floral aromas, notes of orange peel, a touch of creamy sweet spices and great freshness. The palate is medium-bodied, seamless and pure, with pungent flavors and a soft texture. It's long, clean, defined and super tasty. I feel this wine is getting better and better by the vintage. The grapes were picked quite early, and that helped to contain the ripeness and seems to have been a great decision. There was also an exception in the Panquehue zone where the Seña vines are, where the summer was cooler than the average, so quite different to many other regions in Chile. 100,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in February 2021.

98 points, Luis Gutiérrez, Wine Advocate (Issue # 256 - Aug 2021)

Such beautiful aromas of crushed berries, currants, walnuts, allspice and nutmeg follow through to a full body with tight, ultra fine tannins that provide length and intensity. A finish of slightly dried cherries with wet earth, slate and stone. Chewy and fine-grained. A wine with soul and length. Give it time.

98 points, James Suckling (Sep 2021)

The 25th anniversary vintage, and an excellent showcase of the supple, nuanced fruits of this wine. Plenty of black cherry and bilberry puree, pure but layered. It has the rich depths that always delivers, where things are almost too much and yet not quite enough, still leaving you wanting more. Fragrant raspberry leaf becomes clearer as it opens in the glass, as does the saline minerality and a smoky finish, with the tannins becoming more delicate by the minute, highlighting freshness and juice. Located in the Aconguacgua foothills, following biodynamic farming. Tasted twice.

2019 Casa Castillo Pie Franco (750ml)
Mourvedre from Jumilla, Spain

97WA

As it happened when I compared the 2016 with the 2017, the only problem with the 2019 Pie Franco was that I tasted it next to the stratospheric 2020. This 2019 comes from the same ungrafted and dry-farmed vines planted in 1942 on a south-facing slope on poor limestone soils covered by gravels. In this vintage, it fermented destemmed in underground pools with indigenous yeasts and matured in 500-liter oak barrels for 16 months. The wine is very Monastrell with the ripeness from the south exposition, with pungent notes of esparto grass and tree bark (vs. the pine needles in the wines from north-facing vineyards), characterful and with some dusty tannins that give it some rusticity. This is lovely and should develop nicely in bottle. 6,800 bottles were filled in March 2021.
